1 Waller weekly news 27 january 2017 The team had a big week this week with some extra racing and the winners flowing headlined by Via Napoli (pictured) and Montauk s victories at Randwick on Saturday. Randwick also proved a happy hunting ground yesterday with three winners including Aquatic saluting at long odds fittingly in the Australia Day colours for his team of Star Thoroughbreds owners. On top of this we celebrated Winx being honoured on the world stage at the Longines World s Best Racehorse Awards, rated third overall in the world while being the world s highest rated mare and turf horse. The sales team have been busy this week with inspeictions at Karaka ahead of New Zealand Bloodstock s yearling sales next week. Karaka has proved a happy hunting ground for the team with stable bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster selecting the likes of Sacred Falls, Kermadec and Preferment over the years while Nev and Jenny Morgan s Rangirangdoo was also bought from NZB. 2 l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK montauk 4yo G More Than Ready - Diamond Cove by Octagonal Montauk relished the 2000m trip when winning at Randwick on Saturday. Brenton Avdulla was in the saddle and he settled the son of More Than Ready towards the rear of the field early on before producing him in the straight with a sustained challenge. Hitting the front inside the final furlong, Montauk sprinted away for an impressive success. This was a fourth career win and on this evidence he should add to this tally in the the coming weeks. WATCH the race replay. via napoli 4yo M Fastnet Rock - Celebria by Peintre Celebre This talented daughter of Fastnet Rock made it back to back wins when scoring at Randwick on Saturday over 1600m. Jason Collett was on board and he took luck out of the equation leading from the outset. She travelled strongly throughout and quickened away in the straight for an impressive victory. She has now won three from 11 starts to go with four placings for owner John Camilerri. WATCH the race replay. monasterio 3yo G Savabeel - Pingus by Falbrav This NZ bred son of Savabeel relished the 1900m and the cut in the track when gaining a maiden win at Canterbury on Friday night under Kerrin McEvoy. McEvoy was positive from the outset and had Monasterio travelling on the pace in second position just outside the leader. He made his move approaching the straight and had built up plenty of momentum as they turned into the straight and although he was in front a long with from home, he kept going strongly to repel the challengers in the straight for a gutsy success. WATCH the race replay. aquatic 3yo G Beneteau - Halimeda by Fusaichi Pegasus The son of Beneteau fulfilled his early promise when gaining a maiden success at Randwick on Thursday over 1200m. Adam Hyeronimus was on board in a rare mount for the stable and he rode a patient race settling his mount at the rear of the field early on. Aquatic seemed to relish the cut in the Randwick track as he sprinted away in the straight for a most impressive victory to delight his large group of owners who race him under the Star Thoroughbreds banner. 3 sizzling bullet 3yo C Snitzel - Hollow Bullet by Tayasu Tsuyoshi The son of Snitzel seemed to relish the step up in distance when winning at Randwick on Thursday over 1800m. Hugh Bowman took the mount and he settled him at the rear of the five horse field early on before producing him with a well timed challenge in the straight to narrowly defeat the short priced favourite Harper s Choice. This was a second win from just four starts and he looks like a possible Derby type for the coming months. WATCH the race replay. obsidian 6yo G Street Cry - Latice by Inchinor Having been placed on several occasions since joining the stable this imported galloper gained a well deserved victory at Randwick on Thursday when winning over 1800m. Glyn Schofield was in the saddle and he was content to bide his time at the rear of the field early on before bringing the son of Street Cry with a sustained challenge in the straight for a gutsy victory. Now that he has got his head in front in Australia he can hopefully gain some confidence and build on this success. WATCH the race replay. walk the streets 3yo F Street Cry - Kakakakatie by Zedative After being placed at her first two starts this daughter of Street Cry was another one to record a maiden success when winning at Gosford last Thursday over 1600m. Leigh Roche took the mount in the Gerry Harvey colours and he a had her in a good spot just behind the leaders in fourth position early on. The addition of blinkers seemed to do the trick as she hit the front inside the final furlong and quickened away for a cosy victory. WATCH the race replay. echo queen 4yo M Starspangledbanner - Breaking News by Brief Truce The daughter of Starspangledbanner finally ended a frustrating run for her connections when gaining a well deserved maiden victory at Pakenham last Thursday over 1400m under Craig Newitt. This was her 17th start and having been placed on plenty of occasions, Thursday s race looked like a gilt edged opportunity to break through and so it proved. Craig Newitt had her prominent from the outset in second position and she hit the front inside the final furlong to score narrowly.

4 Third Cox Plate will open door to the world Trainer Chris Waller conceded Winx may need to race overseas to earn the world s best racehorse accolade. But the good news for Australian race fans is Winx is not going anywhere this year. Winx is likely to have eight race starts during 2017 with the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during The Championships at Royal Randwick in April and the $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October as her main aims before Waller thinks about an international campaign for his great mare. The world deserves to see Winx at her best, Waller said. But the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes and then a third Cox Plate are our goals for this year. If she wins that third Cox Plate then I don t think there s any more to achieve at home and I m sure the owners would agree to a world experience. Waller revealed his plans at the Longines World s Best Racehorse Awards in London on Tuesday night where Winx came a close third to American champions Arrogate and California Chrome. Winx s rating of 132 equalled that achieved by the great Black Caviar when she was a co-winner of the World s Best Racehorse Award in Black Caviar had won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot a few months earlier. But Winx s rating wasn t enough to beat Arrogate (134) and California Chrome (133) for the 2016 title. Winx was acclaimed at the best mare in world racing and also the highest-rated galloper on turf. Arrogate won the title after 20 handicappers from 17 countries analysed all the Group 1 races around the world last year before arriving at Arrogate s peak figure following his narrow defeat of California Chrome in an epic US Breeders Cup Classic. This also provided the Breeders Cup Classic with the title of the World s Best Race for 2016 with Winx s eightlengths Cox Plate romp coming equal second. Winx s win in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill last autumn secured that race a ranking of seventh in the world last year.

5 Arrogate s American trainer Bob Baffert was in London to accept the World s Best Racehorse Award for the second successive year after winning the coveted title with American Pharoah. I never thought I d have another American Pharoah, Baffert said. Arrogate came to the party a bit late but bloomed at the right time and to be able to beat California Chrome was a great effort. It was so quiet after American Pharoah retired, so to be lucky enough to come back here and have another best horse in the world, that means a lot. Baffert left London to oversee the final stages of Arrogate s preparation before a rematch with California Chrome in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, Florida, this weekend. But the American training legend had some complimentary things to say about the mighty Winx after watching some of her wins replayed at the London awards ceremony. Winx what a great horse she is, Baffert said. I didn t know much about her before today but she is something else. - Ray Thomas. MAGIC MILLIONS ALL TOO HARD COLT - RACE HIM WITH GUY MULCASTER Race this All Too Hard colt with stable bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster - the man that selected the world s highest rated turf horse and mare in Winx! Guy has such a big opinion of this Magic Millions colt he s kept a share in him and he has a lot of faith in the progeny of All Too Hard They re running well and I won t be surprised if he has five or six winners by Easter and then that will push their prices right up - they will end up being very expensive. 6 Waller, Bowman return from London in style A whirlwind trip to London to represent Winx on the world stage has done nothing to stop jockey Hugh Bowman and trainer Chris Waller from combining for Sizzling Bullet's victory at Randwick. Winx was crowned the world's best racehorse on turf on Wednesday morning (AEDT) and the jockey-trainer combination made their latest collaboration count one day later. Bowman stepped off a plane in Sydney on Thursday morning and showed now signs of jet lag as he lifted Sizzling Bullet ($4.80) to win #TheRaces Handicap (1800m) by a half a length from $1.65 favourite Harper's Choice. "Never felt better," Bowman said. Sizzling Bullet settled last before Bowman put him into the race in the straight where he took until the final 50m to grind out the win. The three-year-old colt is out of 2004 VRC Oaks winner Hollow Bullet and was bought by part-owner Vinery Stud for $450,000 as a yearling. "He'll fit into some of the better staying races for sure," Waller said. "I'll have a talk to the team at Vinery and see how we're situated in terms of timing for the autumn or the winter." Acquatic's boilover win gave the stable an early race-to-race double, with jockey Adam Hyeronimus wearing Australian flag silks. Sent out at $61, Acquatic won the Tab.Com.Au Plate (1200m) like an odds-on chance, coming from back in the field to sprint away to put three lengths on Every Chance ($31). Drachenfels ($2.70 fav) ran third. Waller said the key to the three-year-old gelding's improvement was being ridden quietly. "This horse has been panicking a lot, not breathing properly, not relaxing and then pulling up quite distressed after his races," Waller said. - AAP Aquatic celebrations.

7 getting to know connor smithers This week Rosehill-based strapper Connor Smithers took the time to tell us a bit about himself and complete our staff interview. I was born on the 19/08/99 in Coffs Harbour, a town on the midnorth coast of NSW. I lived there for 17 years and have just recently moved to Sydney for my new job with Chris Waller Racing, which I am really enjoying while learning a lot. I have an interest in horses because of my Dad who would take me to the races when I was younger for a day out. From there I then applied for a job in Coffs Harbour with trainer Joanne Hardy, who has taught me everything I know about horse racing. Favourite quote? Champions believe in themselves when no one else does. Favourite part of the job? Waking up in the morning to come see such great athletes! Favourite horse? Strawberry Boy. Role model? My Dad (Stephen Smithers). Favourite jockey? Blake Shinn. Best horse ever seen? Winx. Favourite food? Nachos. If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite?
