Meet the Staff Ron Robinson prepares for his fifth season guiding the Lady Pirates. Over the past four seasons, Robinson and his staff have established the Lady Pirates as one of the top teams in the Alabama Community College Conference. The three-time ACCC South Coach of the Year led the Lady Pirates to back-to-back NJCAA Region 22 title game appearances in both 2017 and 2018. Under Robinson s direction, the Lady Pirates are 42-6 in the ACCC South Division and have not suffered defeat in the south since February 22, 2016. The Lady Pirates have claimed the ACCC South Division Title in four of the past five seasons. Robinson s biggest win to date came on November 3, 2017, in a 50-41 victory over then number 21 Tyler Junior College. Last season, Robinson s squad set records for both points scored in a game in a 128-29 victory over West Georgia Tech and fewest points allowed in an 86-28 defeat of Coastal Alabama South. The Lady Pirates also tied a school record 25 wins after going 25-7 in 2018. Since 2014, Robinson has coached seven All Region 22 players, eight All ACCC players, and 2018 ACCC South Player of the Year, Kelsie Towns. Before arriving at CVCC, Robinson was a volunteer assistant coach at North Highland Assembly in the Columbus Parks and Recreation League from 2009-2012. Robinson assisted North Highland Assembly in claiming the Men s League Championship in 2009, 2010, 2011, and League Runner-Up in 2012. Robinson is a native of Mobile, AL, where he led Vigor High School to a 33-4 record and Final Four appearance in 2003. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Robinson was no stranger to the ACCC after he spent two seasons as a student athlete at Faulkner State Community College from 2003-2005. Robinson was a 2005 NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention and ACCC All-Region player while at Faulkner State. In 2005, Robinson transferred to play his final two collegiate seasons at Columbus State University (CSU), where he was coached by the late Hall-of-Fame Coach Herbert Greene. While at CSU, Robinson was a two-time Peach Belt All Conference and two-time South Atlantic All-Region player. Robinson received his BS degree in Criminal Justice at CSU. Michael Woods is in his third season with the Lady Pirates as the Assistant Women s Basketball Coach. He is a graduate of Columbus High School where he was a four-year varsity basketball letterman. Season Outlook Expectations are at an all-time high for the Lady Pirates of Chattahoochee Valley as they return to action this 2018-2019 season. For the past two years, the Lady Pirates have claimed the ACCC South with a perfect division record of 24-0. In 2017, they finished as NJCAA Region 22 Runners-Up with an overall record of 23-8. Their 2018 campaign saw an improvement in the overall record as the Lady Pirates finished the season 25-7. For a second consecutive year, they would appear in the NJCAA Region 22 Championship game; however, they finished again as Runners-Up. This season the Lady Pirates have their sights set on returning to the title game, and WINNING! With a perfect blend of talented newcomers and an experienced group of returners, the Lady Pirates are poised to have another special season. This group has an abundance of talent and ability, but maturity and strong leadership will be the ultimate keys to a successful season for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Pirates return three All Conference guards in Audrey McElhaney, Zikira Williams, and Timi a Swanson. Swanson will assume her role as the do it all guard that can be moved around as needed. Both McElhaney and Williams also received All Region recognition. McElhaney, who was named to the 2018 WBCA JUCO Top 40 All Tournament Team, will lead the Lady Pirates offense attack. She and Williams return as the Lady Pirates leading scorers at 13.8 and 11 points per contest respectively. Also returning at the guard positions are Anesha Bri Smith and sharp shooter Dayana Chaney. Smith will be counted on to bring a physical defensive presence back to the squad after sitting out last season. Returning at the post positions are Jessica Maye, Lashunte Faniel, and Zari Mays. Joining the Lady Pirates front court are Savannah State University transfer, Kayla Vance, and Gayla Bostic, who comes in after a season at St. Petersburg College. The assembly of post players will provide many different looks for the Lady Pirates. Leading the way for the newcomers will be 2018 GHSA Region 1-4A Player of the Year, Jy Long of Americus Sumter H.S. Long s ability to score from outside and create her on shot makes her a serious threat at the point position. The Lady Pirates backcourt also features the addition of local talent Alycia Reese (Carver H.S., Columbus, GA), ShiCoriya Orr (Center Point H.S., Birmingham, AL), Sayah Brooks (Douglas County H.S., Douglasville, GA), and Destiny Thomas (Bossier H.S. Bossier City, LA). Orr and Thomas will provide additional offensive fire power at the guard spots; both scored better than 15 points a game as seniors in high school. Reese and Brooks have proven to be legit outside scoring threats among the newcomers. Rounding out the Lady Pirates roster is the lone freshman post, Bria Henry (Kendrick H.S., Columbus, GA). Henry will provide a physical defensive presence for the Lady Pirates front court. The Lady Pirates schedule will feature contests against NJCAA Top 25 power-houses, including the defending National Champion. This year s team will be very exciting to watch. We have replaced the height on last year s team with a ton of speed and athleticism which should provide some high-speed excitement for Pirate basketball fans, explained Head Coach Ron Robinson. Once we have 100 percent buy-in, this group will exceed any and all expectations placed upon them!
