Welcome to Packer Basketball! It is with great excitement that I introduce to you myself, as well as the important aspects of the basketball program. This is my 14 th year of teaching and coaching at South St. Paul High School, and my 9 h year as Head Varsity Basketball Coach. Basketball is my passion and I am excited to continue sharing my passion with your daughters. I feel it is very important that as players and parents you know exactly what the expectations are and what we hope to promote here in the Packer Basketball program. I hope you take the time to read through this handbook to understand what will be required of each of you. The Coaching Staff Varsity Coach-Kristin Johnson (w) kristinjohnson@sspps.org Assistant & JV Coach- Lindsey Peterson x 7152 (w) lindsey.peterson@sspps.org Assistant & B-Squad Coach-Mikayla Garibay garibaymikayla@ymail.com 9 th Grade Coach-Brock Buesing x 2116 (w) bbuesing@sspps.org Finally, I can ensure you that the coaching staff I have hired this year will be one of the most dedicated, enthusiastic, and hard working in the state. They are all ready to share their love of the sport and teaching with your daughters. I am excited to have them as part of this staff. We are all geared up to start the new season with a lot to try and defend. Please be sure to check out the Girls Basketball Page on the SSP Website. Bookmark it as one of your favorites! You can find practice and game schedules, coach s information, game day notes, and other important information regarding our program! GO PACKERS! Sincerely, ~ The Coaching Staff

My core values are work ethic and commitment to themselves and the team. My moral character skills are trustworthiness and honesty. COACH GARIBAY Young athletes come together through sports. I want to lead athletes through an experience that develops remarkable character, integrity, and empower each player to become leaders within our community. I coach to instill life lessons such as; responsibility, commitment, and determination on and off the court. COACH BUESING My purpose is to have my athletes be their best self. They will be better people after our season. The girls will have fun and learn the basics of how to play basketball. PACKER VALUES P RIDE A TTITUDE CHARA C TER WOR K ETHIC E MPATHY R ESPECT HI S TORY
PRACTICE GUIDELINES 1. Be on Time PLAYER EXPECTATIONS Be dressed and ready on the floor at 2:50 (besides late practice). Each girl should be working on individual skills at the start of each practice and be recording their progress daily. For late practice we expect the girls are ready 10 minutes before the listed schedule time. Communicate with your coach if you are going to be late or gone. When you are it affects our practice plan so the earlier we know the better. DO NOT have someone else communicate for you. Be responsible and contact your coach on your own! Information on Tardies and Absences are found below. 2. Wear Practice Gear Each and every day you need to make sure you have your practice gear. There will be consequences for players who forget their practice gear. 3. Injuries Girls who are injured are still apart of the team and are expected to be at practice every day. WE EXPECT A DOCTORS NOTE IF GIRLS ARE SITTING OUT- WITH EXACT SPECIFICATIONS of what they can/can not do. Girls who can should dress and take part in whatever sort of physical activity they can or rehab while we are practicing. ABSENCES Excused Absences- An excused absence or tardy is one where the coach is aware of the absence or tardy before a game or practice. The coach should be contacted by telephone or to be notified of absences. An excused absence can come in the form of a family emergency or illness. Unexcused Absences- An unexcused absence is an absence or tardy that is not approved by the head coach or that does not result from an illness or emergency. Unexcused absences include work, babysitting, concerts, family vacations, detention, haircuts, senior pictures, or outings with friends *If a player is gone the day before a game excused or not they will not start the game! Unexcused absence from practice will mean the following: conditioning and halves missed GAME DAY RULES 1. Pre-Game Routines Home Games VARSITY PLAYERS will need to be in the gym by 5:30pm or whatever the start time is for the game prior. Know the Schedule!!! v All other players (B-Squad/JV & 9 th Grade) need to be dressed and ready 35 minutes prior to game time. You should be in the gym for the start of the game before yours! You need to be ready in enough time to help set up the gym for the home games. Away Games all players must be in the team room 15 minutes prior to bus departure. Dress the way the captains plan for. Be a team and look like a team on game day. No cell phones once arrival into gym. v They have been a distraction in the past and cause way too much drama prior to game time. If a player needs to call parents or has an emergency they need to discuss phone usage with me or their coach first!
2.Game Time Routines B-Squad and JV players will sit behind the varsity bench and will be responsible for taping and stats during Varsity games. They must also stay and PICK UP after the Varsity game. Prior approval must be received for players to leave before the Coach excuses them! 3.Road Trips All VARSITY players will ride the bus back to school, no exceptions. All players are expected to ride the team bus to and from all home games and scrimmages. If a circumstance arises and you must ride home with your parents, you must have a note from your parent in the activities office prior to leaving for the game. The bus ride to away games will be SILENT! Prepare yourself for the game, do your homework, and relax! Upon arrival back to the school, no one leaves the team room until all the uniforms are in the laundry bags and warm ups hung up, which means EVERYONE must come into team room after away games. UNIFORMS 1.Uniforms are to be worn for games only. This means jerseys and shorts. Please bring a change of clothes for away games. We do not want the lower level girls walking around in their uniforms after their games. 2. Laundering Uniforms JV & Varsity uniforms will be washed by the head coach/managers 9 th & B-Squad uniforms need to be handled carefully. Please follow the directions on the tag for washing and DO NOT DRY the uniforms. If there is no label, please launder in cold or warm water and hang dry on a plastic hanger. This will ensure that our uniforms last as long as they need to. 3.Uniforms are school property. They will be issued, inventoried, and must be returned at the end of the season. They should not be worn at any point other than in the game setting. If they are not returned your report card will be held or fines will be assessed. PLAYING TIME Freshman: Provide an opportunity for our young, inexperienced players to learn, grow and develop. The ultimate goal is to have introduced the student athlete to competitive basketball and prepare them from varsity competition. Playing time is not equal. B-Squad: The goal is to provide the opportunity to learn, grow and mature. While preparing and striving to win is part of athletic competition, the ultimate goal is to improve in all aspects of the game. However, playing time will not be equal and will be up to the discretion of the coaching staff. These players are expected to stay for varsity games and sit behind the bench to support the varsity team. Junior Varsity: The team will continue to focus on improving basketball skills and their understanding of the game. Opportunities will be provided for players have more playing time than they would get at the varsity level alone. Playing time is not equal. These players are expected to stay for varsity games and sit behind the bench to support and learn from the varsity team. Often times in practice the JV team will act as the scout team, or practice with the B-Squad. Varsity Team: Varsity competition is the culmination of the basketball maturation process. Playing time is based on ability, effort and attitude. While contest participation over the course of a season is desirable, a specified amount of playing time at the varsity level is not guaranteed, just showing up does not guarantee playing time. - Making a team / roster doesn t guarantee playing time. Playing time is earned. - All players will be assessed on their skill level and abilities during a try out period. The players will be assessed on their ability and skill levels, their desire to follow instructions, their receptiveness to be instructed by all coaches, their attitude toward their teammates, coaching staff and the program. We want well rounded student-athletes in our program. Skill will be judged first, then will come the other areas listed above. - The Coaching Staff at all levels will place players on rosters based on the head coach s analysis of each player and the needs of the program.
LETTERING POLICY Lettering in girls basketball is an honor and should be treated as such. We, as coaches, take great pride in who letters in our program. It is an honor that must be earned by meeting the criteria below: a. Athlete must compete in or make an appearance in ¼ games during the regular season. b. Athlete successfully completes the season. Managers must also complete entire season. c. Athlete is on the final section roster. d. All seniors who have played a minimum of two years for the girl's program. Including having good attendance, good behavior and is a member of the Varsity team from start to finish, but may not play in over half of the seasons matches will also letter for that season e. Participate in the K-2 grade youth association program on Saturday mornings. Must volunteer for at least 4 Saturdays. v The coaching staff reserves the right to letter any athlete, or manager that does not meet the above requirements if their attitude/behavior contributes towards the success of the team. v The coaching staff also reserves the right to withhold letters, regardless of meeting the above criteria, if behavior/attitude is a detriment to the team, other circumstances arise which affect the athletes ability to complete entire season. ACADEMICS One of the student-athletes greatest achievements is to receive their diploma. Our program will provide the support needed to make this possible. The basketball program will commit to making education a top priority among our student-athletes. Two things will be important to keep in mind. 1.Classroom Attendance- Players must be in school by 10:02 (the start of 3 rd period) to be eligible to participate in practice or games. Exceptions are pre-excused absences such as a funeral, or doctor s appointment. 2.Grades- Students need to be receiving a cumulative GPA of 1.7 to be eligible to participate in basketball! COMMUNICATION The chain of command to follow when addressing concerns is as follows: Player must discuss issue with the coach before contact is made by the parents. Meeting between coach and parent (athlete present) o 24 Hour advance notice on all meetings must be made. o 24 Hours must pass after a game before contact is made. Meeting between coaches, athlete, parents and Activities Director All issues and concerns will be dealt with in confidence.
PARENT EXPECTATIONS As parents you play the most crucial role in the development of your child. Your daughters model your behaviors and take to heart every lesson you teach them. As a parent I hope you will be involved in a positive way and encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating support for the program, players, coaching staff and officials. We ask the following of you at all levels: - Support your daughter and the team. Always be positive around your daughter! o Try not to take sides. There will be times your daughter does not like our decisions. Instead of attacking the coach and siding with her against the coach, support your daughter by encouraging her to continue working hard and having a positive attitude! - Encourage your daughter to always give her best and be dedicated to the team. - Attend your daughter s games as often as you can. - Cheer for the team, do not instruct from the stands. - Observe proper basketball court etiquette during games and practices. - Be completely honest with yourself about your daughter s athletic ability, work ethic, and attitude. Remember there are things you do not see that happen at practice that may be affecting your daughter s playing time. o Try not to compare your daughter to others on the team so that it puts the girls against one another. - Encourage your daughter to meet with head coach with any issues that may arise. - Parents are welcome to meet with the head coach only if the below happen first, to identify any conflicts; excluding team tactics, strategy, rotations or playing time. Items of concern will be listened to and addressed. o Daughter must discuss issue with the coach before contact is made by the parents. o 24 Hour advance notice on all meetings must be made. o 24 Hours must pass after a game before contact is made. o All issues and concerns will be dealt with in confidence.
South St. Paul Girl s Basketball E xpectations & Good Sport Code of Conduct As members of this program we will work together to be good sports. We believe that sportsmanship is a top priority for all involved in our program. We recognize that good sportsmanship includes respect, courtesy, humility, pride, fairness, following the rules of the game, and treating teammates and opponents with respect. We will work together to promote good sportsmanship during each and every game, practice, and team outing. Student Athletes: We will - Exhibit good sportsmanship at all times and show respect for our opponents. - Accept the decisions of the coaches and contest officials without arguing. - Be respectful of your teammates, coaches, administrators, and parents of both teams. - Communicate with our coaches in advance about issues that come up or frustrations we have. - Avoid negative gestures and language. - Display humility in victory and graciousness in defeat. - Acknowledge and applaud good plays. - Keep our academics in good standing so eligibility is maintained. - Stay chemical free throughout the entire year. - Consistently put forth your best effort in practices and games. - Be fully responsible for your own actions. - Obey all the rules of our school and the laws of my community, state, and country. Parents: We will - Exhibit good sportsmanship at all times and show respect for our opponents. - Refrain from crowd booing or making negative comments about the officials, coaches or other players. - Show respect and represent the South St Paul basketball program with class. - Communicate concerns with coaches first, after daughter has spoken with coach. The time to approach a coach will also be in an appropriate time and place. - Support the coaches attempt to get the best out of their players. Cut and Return Below I have read the player/parent handbook and the above Good Sport Code of Conduct and will do everything I can to follow the expectations and support the South St. Paul Girl s Basketball Program. If I break one of the above commitments, I can expect that possible consequences might be forthcoming. Player Name: Player Signature: Parent Signature:
