The condition is fair to good, except for the section between km 22 and 27 where the riding quality is uneven. Road works are in progress between km 50 and km 70. Bi directional traffic will be maintained but STOP/GO closures may be encountered on occasion. Motorist are urged to obey the posted speed limits. Mthatha to Brooks Nek (provincial boundary) 170 km A 2 lane single carriageway with climbing lanes and paved shoulders. (Up to Mt. Frere no passing lanes between Mt. Frere and Brooks Nek) except the last 16km. The condition of the road between km 54 to km 70 is fair however routine maintenance may be encountered. Climbing lanes are provided on all the severe grades with the exception of a short 6 km section 26 km north of Kokstad. There are no construction works. Motorists to be aware of pedestrian activity between Harding and Port Shepstone. Amit Bhoora 082 442 9646 Port Shepstone to Durban (/N3 Interchange) 114 km The first 20 km is a single carriageway road with three lanes of traffic and narrow paved shoulders allowing overtaking opportunities. Thereafter the road becomes a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The last 17 km leading into Durban has 3 lanes in each direction and is heavily trafficked. Construction work at the Moss Kolnick (new Amanzimtoti) Interchange commenced on 1 st February 2010 and will continue for a period of approximately 21 months. There will be deviations and reduced speeds. Contra-flow traffic will be enforced during various phases of the upgrading. There will be a reduced clearance limit for construction of the bridge deck over the. Up to October 2011. Durban to Empangeni 162 km For 71 km, up to Stanger, the road is a four-lane dual carriageway. For the next 52 km, up to the Mtunzini Toll Plaza, the road is a four-lane single carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The remaining portion is also a single carriageway with alternating passing opportunities. A project for major improvements to Umgeni Road Interchange will commence in April 2011. There will be minimum disruptions to traffic on the, with only short term closures on slow lanes at tie ins of the directional ramps. Speed restrictions will be signposted. The underpass (M25) road at the KwaMashu Interchange will receive new lane configurations starting from May 2011. Motorists using the underpass and ramps will experience Stop/Go control delays. Duration for this work is 6 months. Night work may be possible. A contract for reconstruction of the Ballito Interchange commenced in January 2011. Speed restrictions will be signposted and traffic will be deviated onto the ramps during demolition of the existing bridge. A project for the rehabilitation of the for 3km north of Mtunzini plaza commenced in October 2010 and will continue until March 2011. There will be lane closures and reduced speeds will be enforced. A project for the replacement of paving at the Mvoti and Mtunzini toll plazas commenced in September 2010 and will continue until June 2011. Various, with last completion in 2013. The section between Cato Ridge and the end of the Pietermaritzburg Bypass (33 km) has a two-lane plus paved shoulder configuration, except on steep gradients to the east of Pietermaritzburg where climbing lanes are provided. The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the notorious, steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction.
