OPTIONS Day Program Newsletter July 2018 HAPPY 151 st BIRTHDAY, CANADA! Fun fact #1: From 1868-1965 Canada had a much different flag, called the Canadian Red Ensign. Lester Pearson wanted to replace the old flag to promote Canadian identity and national unity. Fun Fact #2: Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the constitution act, which united Canada in 1867. We began with only 4 provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec. The rest soon followed. Ideas for how to celebrate this year! BBQ, parties, dancing, wearing red and white, attending the parade, watching fireworks, and visiting numerous spots around the city that offer activities including: Prince s Island Park, Eau Claire, and East Village. Fort Calgary will be hosting an action-packed day. You can enjoy a FREE pancake breakfast, take silly photos in the photo booth, pet animals at the petting zoo, watch fireworks from Globalfest, listen to live music, try multiple foods at the food trucks, make your own crafts, get a cool fake tattoo, and much, much more!

The aboriginals have been involved with the Stampede since the beginning. In the early days, they would camp out with their horses on 50 th avenue where the power line runs between MacLeod Trail and Elbow Drive. Everyday they rode their horses to the Stampede grounds. Today you can visit the Indian Village at the Stampede, and enjoy their culture which includes: native dress, teepees, dancing, abodes, drumming, powwows, and beaded crafts.
