Commodore s Corner - Incoming Commodore, Seaby Bess, Fellow Sailors, Thank you for allowing me to service as your Commodore. Since moving here two and a half years ago Betti and I have made good friends here in GCSC and enjoyed some great times on the water as you can see in the picture below. We have a great slate of officers and I look forward to great year of events collaborating with each other. I would like to also like acknowledge Jeff Gage and Shelly Russo for taking over the coordination of the food at our land side events. The November Sugden event was a fantastic picnic thanks to their efforts. If you have never attended our Sudgen monthly BBQ I encourage you to do so. It s a beautiful location with fresh water lake and comfortable smaller sailboats as well. Bill the Director there is always offering simple instruction on the water that makes it a very safe venue. Willliam (Bill) Meisner will teach Small Sailboat 101 - December 10 th Sugden Meeting Bill Meisner s Sailing History 1965 to Present He began his sailing career as a 13-year-old on the inland lake district of northern Ontario Canada on a Hobie 14 catamaran sailboat. In 1977 I met Hobie Alter at the Detroit Boat show and he sold me on his newest creation the Hobie 18 which I ordered immediately and received Hull # 49, the 2 nd one in Canada, there are over 18,000 boats built of that model to date. In 1996 I moved permanently to Naples, Florida where I enrolled and passed George Koch s United States Yacht Racing Union Level 1 Instructor course (USYRU later changed its name to U S Sailing). I was introduced to the Gulf Coast Sailing Club that year and from 1977 until 2007 served as Secretary, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Principal Race Officer, and finally as a member of the Board of Directors. I also competed on various boats in GCSC club races and the Key West races and owned the J-24 called BANG which I used to teach GCSC members. From 1997 I worked for the Naples Community Sailing Center as an instructor, Green Fleet Optimist Coach and a High School 420 coach as well as serving as the Director of Sailing. Over the years I have received accreditation from U S Sailing as a Level 1, Level 2, halfway to Level 3 (Olympic), Keel Boat, Level 1 Instructor Trainer, and NASBLA Powerboat Instructor, and as recently as 4 weeks ago hosted and graduated as a US Sailing Special Needs Instructor. I have had the opportunity to have coached and instructed numerous Collegiate All-American sailors as well as members of the United States Olympic Sailing Team.

Membership meeting - Holiday Party - Where: River Park Community Center at 301 11 th Street N in Naples. When: Wednesday, December 13 th at 6 pm Come enjoy a lovely assortment of hors d oeuvres including shrimp, sliced petite fillet on rolls, etc. Jeff Gage & Shelly Russo are planning something special for us!! We ask members to bring a dessert to share and your own libations wine, beer, etc. - the club will supply soft drinks, tonic, cranberry juice and water. Presentation for the evening will be by John Churchill a practicing pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Fort Myers and Naples. "Medical Emergencies at Sea" is a 30 minute presentation providing information on the most common and important medical conditions likely to encountered while sailing along with prevention strategies and first aid and treatment tips. Audience participation is encouraged question/answer session will follow. John Churchill sailing biography A lifelong boat nut, I built my first boat at age 6- it did not float. I started sailing at age 13 on a reservoir in Indiana. As I completed my education and training, I gradually worked my way towards saltwater. I built floating boats later including several 8 foot dinghys as well as a 19 foot sailboat. I moved up to bigger boats while living in Virginia, and sailed my first big boat, a Cape Dory 26, to Bermuda and back solo. I took some time off from work and cruised from Virginia up to Maine and down to the Bahamas. In 2002, I made a trans-atlantic passage with my father in a 28 footer. I now cruise and race NURDLE, a Bristol 35.5 which I resurrected after she was repossessed from the prior owner. I have published a number of articles about work I have done on her as well as an article in SAIL Magazine about a near catastrophe aboard. Come enjoy some great food, with great friends celebrate the holiday and learn what to do when an emergency pops up at sea. Cover all bases!

Except a great sail!

FEW LIVE TO TELL OF THE TERROR AND BATTLE WHEN PIRATES ATTACK THEIR YACHT Captain Skip Rowland s No Return Ticket books are a gripping true story of pirates on deck, dangerous storms and corrupt officials. But in the end it s a love story, as his heart is captured by a lovely crew-mate and romance blossoms on sapphire sea beneath a breathless canopy of stars. From the desk of a master storyteller this true adventure will have you believing you are aboard Endymion- on deck - immersed in the experience. Books make wonderful lasting gifts. Please consider these for your sailing friends or anyone who enjoys adventure. Or consider: Michael Tougias book A Storm to Soon And many other great books. Please use this link to order if you were looking for an exciting read about true heroes in the Coast Guard, and/or how a few sailors survived a devastating storm with 80-foot waves (there are videos on my website!). Thanks for reading. Sincerely, Mike Tougias - - - - www.michaeltougias.com
