SJGS Chalk Talk 5, 2018 Newsletter Volume 15, Issue 2 Reverend G. Scott Shaffer, Director Madeline A. Kinloch, Principal Juliann James, Vice Principal, Institutional Advancement Contents Dear Parents 1 School Happenings 2 PTA News 3 SCRIP/Great Lakes 3 Spartan Athletics 4 & 5 REMINDER: Winter Uniforms are now in affect. The official school shoe is either a slip-on leather loafer or leather tie boat shoe. Any other style shoe is not allowed. (Sneakers require a doctor s note. Dear Parents, Happy! The crisp fall air feels invigorating and signals the upcoming holidays to celebrate with family and friends. Around school, the preparation is on for Thanksgiving Pageants and Christmas Concerts. Lesson plans and bulletin boards are beginning to reflect many holiday themes. My office resembles ShopRite or Stop&Shop with boxes upon boxes of food items collected thus far for the Parish Food Pantry. Pretty soon no one will be able to find me. Your generosity to those in need is unbelievable. The example you set of giving to others is a wonderful gift you give to your child. We all learn by example, and you are truly teaching as Jesus did. Feed The Hungry. It always gives me great pleasure to pass along Good News about our students. Eighth grader, Emma Engle was selected the top winner in the Veteran s Essay Contest. Emma was presented with a certificate and monetary gift at the Township Council Meeting in October. Emma receives the honor of walking in the Veteran s Day Upcoming Events We are so excited that as a school (weather permitting) will be on hand to cheer Emma on at the parade. I do think, she will have the biggest fan base of anyone in the parade. Congratulations to Meghan Carpentier-Kiernan who was chosen as a finalist in the New Jersey Preforming Arts Center s Fall Student Art Exhibit, and to our eighth grade academic team who took third place overall at the St. Rose Scholastic Bowl. Please pass along any congratulatory awards or recognitions we can share as a community. I look forward to seeing all of you at our many upcoming events and who knows there may be some very special visitors at the PTA Barnes and Noble Night. Every child comes with their own unique and special gifts and we are so thankful to have them in our care. God has truly blessed us! Happy Thanksgiving! Chalk Talk Page 4 of 5 Our Spartan Athletic teams have enjoyed successful seasons this fall. The athletic department is very proud of all of our athletes and coaches for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence. Director of Athletics Tom Moriau states Our team accomplishments this fall are a source of pride for our entire school community. SJGS delivers an exceptional athletic experience within an atmosphere of enjoyment, endeavor, passion and success. I am proud to be part of Spartan Athletics. Cross Country SJGS Cross-Country team finished their league schedule on Sunday, October 21 st with the running of the MOCPS Cross Country Championship. Two SJGA runners made it to the Podium Ceremony. Michael Poskay (Sixth Grade) took place 2 nd in the Junior Boys Division and Peter Farlekas (Eight Grade) finished in 2 nd Place in the Senior Boys Division. Our teams ran exceptionally well. Team results were: Junior Girls 6 th Place Junior Boys 2 nd Place Senior Girls 2 nd Place Senior Boys 3 rd Place Overall Team 3 rd out of 17 Teams League President, Sean Woodrow, had this to say about the SJGS Cross Country team, St. Joseph's wins most improved by far. They took second in two divisions and third in another and third place overall right on St. Cat's heels. St. Joseph pressed a SUPER FAST St. Leo's Sr. Girl team to its limit losing by 7 points 38-45. A statement like this shows that the terrific effort of our team members and coaches does not go unnoticed by many around our cross-country league. Congratulations to the entire SJGS Cross Country family! Girls Soccer The girls soccer team has enjoyed a very successful season finishing the regular season with a record of 6 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. Coach Corey states, We have had a pretty good season since this is technically a rebuilding year for us after losing nine 8th graders from last year s team. We have improved since August and that was our goal - to keep improving every game. We are looking forward to playoffs and are going into this confident and heads held high. Boys Soccer The boys soccer has finished the regular season with a record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. Like our girls team, the boys await to find out their opponent in the league play-offs. The play-offs begin on 1 st and 2 nd. Coach Calvetto is very proud of his team, As a result of finishing in 3 rd place after the regular season, the boys will look to begin defending their championship title by hosting the first round of the playoffs at home, scheduled for Friday 2 nd.
