2008 highlights MAC Finish: NIU ended the conference season one victory shy of winning the West Division and posted the school s highest MAC winning percentage (.615). The Huskies matched the schoolrecord with 16 MAC wins and equaled their best finish at the MAC Tournament with two wins and a third-place finish. MAC Wins: The Huskies tied for the MAC s highest win total (16) and won series from both division champions (Kent State and Eastern Michigan). NIU s overall finish of fourth was its highest in 31 years. Attendance: The Huskies set the all-time NIU baseball attendance record with 4,600 on April 16 vs. Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. All-MAC: Four Huskies earned All-MAC accolades as Justin Behm garnered the first team honor and Andy Deain, Trevor Feeney and Jeff Thomas made the second team. MAC P.O.W.: Adam Holdenrid earned two MAC West Pitcher of the Week honors in March. For the week of March 4th, he racked up six strikeouts, his highest total since his freshman season in 2005, over six innings of work in NIU s 3-1 triumph over Southern Illinois, yielding just one walk and one earned run. For the week of March 25th, he hurled his first career complete game and limited Buffalo to three hits, one walk and one earned run while registering a career-high nine strikeouts. All-Star: Bobby Stevens was named to the weekly College Baseball Foundation National All-Star team on April 15 as he four straight multi-hit games from April 9-13. In that span he totaled nine hits for a.642 average with 10 runs, four steals and reached base four times from being hit by a pitch. 2009 Newcomers: Signed the nation s No. 63 ranked high school recruiting class, best among MAC and Illinois schools. Closer: Andy Deain led the MAC with 10 saves and topped the league with a school-record 35 appearances. Wins: Head coach Ed Mathey became the school s career coaching wins leader on March 22 at Buffalo with his 144th victory in the middle of his sixth season at NIU. Illinois: NIU continued its success against Illinois opposition by ending the year with 24-8 (.750) record against intrastate foes over the past three seasons, including a 3-2 record in 2008. Steals and Defense: The Huskies led the MAC with 83 stolen bases and set a school-record with a.963 team fielding percentage. Game Records: Justin Behm tied the school single-game record with eight RBI on three hits, including a pair of homers, vs. Akron on April 13 in the first game of a double header. Joe Etcheverry matched the school-mark with five hits vs. Illinois State on April 23, driving in a run and scoring two. MLB Recognition: NIU was honored prior to a pair of Cactus League openers on Feb. 27 (the Rockies-White Sox game in Tucson and the Royals-Rangers contest in Surprise).
