Summer Reading 2017 Winterberry Farm Program Catalog

Hands-On Programs The goal of every librarian is to get humans to read more books! Natural curiosity is the best motivator, and real time interactions with animals and plants can open new worlds not found through TV or electronics.

Lindsay Sprague B.A. Animal Science Cornell University 2017 Winterberry Farm Ithaca, NY

Chickens Around the World Learn how to care for chickens in your own backyard or a sustainable farming operation. Many heritage and endangered breeds presented. Emphasis on how breeds vary due to their environment, and how to identify them by phenotype.

Horse Hair Bracelets Patrons braid horse hair in order to form the body of the bracelet. Many colors to choose from, hair is naturally collected while grooming. Patrons decorate with a variety of beads and bobbles. Learn about horse care and individual horse s stories.

Dig In Gardening Gardens can be in ground (shown) or in a 4x4 planting box provided. Hands on planting of a 4x4 square foot garden. Participants and librarian can pick which seeds and transplants are planted. Harvest all summer long!

Butterfly Release Personally connect with a butterfly and make a wish! Learn how to identify caterpillars. Plant host and nectar plants. Butterflies can be released as a group or individually. Native species provided for conservation.

Horses 101 Safety working around horses. Learn how horses think, and exercises to help you ride better from the start. Proper care of horse and tack, along with nutrition and shelter needs. Katie the miniature horse will delight your patrons, and enjoys a good brushing!

Traveling Farm Meet the animals on the farm, learn their contribution to sustainable agriculture, and pet them too! Learn about organic management techniques and heritage breeds. Indoors or out, this program is loved by all!

Sheep Shearing and Spinning All ages love watching sheep shearing right in the library! Learn to spin wool on drop spindles, which participants take home along with wool.

Old Fashioned Soap Program can be done for all ages. Younger crowds use a melt and pour soap. Older students make lye soap and learn the whole process. Soap drying time varies by type.

Candle Dipping Candles may be dipped or molded, the sky is the limit! Many vegetable waxes to choose from, also natural white and yellow beeswax. Participants choose scent and colors. Candles ready to give as gifts or enjoy at home.

Dancing with Horses Learn the history of dressage, started by Xenophon. Katie the miniature horse demonstrates. Taught as a ballet class, patrons learn the moves taught by The Spanish Riding School. Based on Marguerite Henry s classic book, The White Stallion of Lipizza.

Angora Wool Spinning Brush an angora rabbit and feed carrots too! Spin angora fiber on drop spindles made from recycled materials. Take home spindles and fiber to keep on spinning!

Patrons will be shredding I mean reading books as enthusiastically as my Doberman! I can t wait to see you this summer!
