CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Dallas-Ft. Worth Chapter - American Singles Golf Association June 2008 Update From the President Debbie was heading off to Mexico but she left these notes: On the Castle Hills Outing: Castle Hills was awesome; at least the course and weather were great, thank goodness my foursome is keeping their traps shut about what I did. On the Possum Kingdom trip in September: I know I have talked about Possum Kingdom (The Cliffs) with a couple of you, one on one, but we need to get the details in the news letter this month; we want a non -refundable deposit; yes that is the business side of me coming out, by a certain date. (OK Boss, we set the drop dead deposit date at August 16. See details below.) ~Debbie Hutson, President Chapter News Castle Hills, Saturday May 17 What a great day of golf we had! The weather was perfect, course was in great condition and dinner on the veranda at Avalon was the perfect ending (thanks Debbie for finding the place). Closest to the pin honors went to Marguerite Hansen and Murray Tanner. First place team came in at 11 under par (61) - David Glasgow, Mark Turk (regulars on the leader board) and Brian Rhodes and Michelle Johnson (2 ringers, I mean guests). And that fabulous raffle prize of a free round for four at Castle Hills was won by Glenda Johnson. Congratulations to all. It was great to see familiar faces return (Joyce, we've missed you) as well as several new guests (Karen, Brian, Michelle, Randy, etc). Except for the club pairing up the men with the men, etc, things went pretty smoothly. Next month's event is at The Tribute in The Colony, Sunday, June 22. We ll have TEE TIMES starting at 12:00 noon. We ll be playing a Shamble format. You ll pick the best drive of your foursome, but then play your own ball for the rest of the hole. You record the best individual score as the score for your group. Lads and lassies, it will be like we re back in bonny Scotland, except without the Dollar-Pound sticker shock. Maybe they ll play the bag pipes. Special Summer Events We re planning several special 9 hole Friday evening events this summer. Our June 6 outing at Coyote Ridge is completely booked. Thanks for the great participation. Plan now for our July 25 th event at Riverside off 360 in Grand Prairie. We ll have tee times starting at 5:30 PM so more people can come play and finish before dark. The cost is $45 which includes a hamburger or chicken sandwich buffet. Random Comments Overheard at Avalon on a Perfect May Evening Jennifer: Wow Murray - you sure have a big rack (of ribs)! Murray: That's not all I have baby! Jennifer: Yes, I see! You have fries too. Carl (reflecting on the far-flung distances we travel in the ASGA to play golf): We should change our motto to Fun, Fairways, and Freeways! Attend a Multi-Chapter Event. Meet more singles. Play more golf. Kim (and several others): A proper gentleman does not take a picture of a ladies posterior. Bill: Who made that rule? From the Social Chair In June, we're going to move the Happy Hour again to Dave and Buster s in Dallas at I-35 and Walnut Hill. Dave and Buster's has a good sized bar area, full menu and, of course, lots and lots of games - from skee ball to multi-player video games. Who wants to challenge the Air Hockey Master? Bring it on! We've all played video race car games before, but have you ever raced against your friends in a multi-player game? What a blast! Load up your Power Card and have fun. ~David Glasgow From the Membership Chair Our membership now stands at 92 as of May 30. We re growing!!!! June seems to be the month that brings out the golfers. Hmmmm.do you think it s the warmer weather? I m encouraged by the fact that we are getting new members without them ever playing a round of golf with the group or even coming to a Happy Hour!! We look forward to meeting these new members at the next event. If you are not receiving email notices regarding upcoming events, please check the attached roster and verify your email address. Send any corrections to membershipchair@asgadfw.org and I ll get the information to National. Tell your friends, neighbors and coworkers about ASGA. His opponent is Tom. On the par-4, 3rd hole, Tom s third shot (a chip to the green) comes to rest 2 feet from the hole. Larry s third shot is also a chip to the green. Larry, who normally couldn t hit the broad side of a barn, lands his ball on the green with the ball rolling on-line to the hole. Larry s ball, like a cruise missile, heads directly at Tom s ball, hits it, and like a cue ball propels Tom s ball into the hole, curplunk. Larry s ball is deflected about 5 feet. Larry who is often referred to as the rules czar states that the Tom s ball is holed (score of 3) and his ball (Larry s ball) is lying three, no penalty and he is putting for par. Tom says he wants to get a ruling from the tournament judge before going further and possibly entering an incorrect score. He thinks Larry should incur a 2 stroke penalty and play from where his ball lies and that he (Tom) is not entitled to the gift drop into the cup, but rather should be required to place his ball back at the previous position and put for par. What is the correct ruling? A.) Larry incurs a penalty of two strokes and will play his ball as it lies. Tom must place his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 5 putting for 6. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) B.) Larry incurs a two stroke penalty and both will play their balls as they lie. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is lying 5 putting for 6. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) C.) Larry incurs a penalty of one stroke and will play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 4 putting for bogie. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) D.) Larry incurs a one stroke penalty and both will play their balls as they lie. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is hitting lying 4 putting for bogie. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) E.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 3 putting for par. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) F.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is hitting lying 3 putting for par. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) And the answer is. E.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 3 putting for par. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) Tom s ball was at rest when struck and moved by Larry s ball. Rule 18 (The Ball at Rest Moved) section mandates that if a ball at rest is moved by another ball after a stroke, the ball that was moved must be replaced, to the position it was at when moved, without penalty. Rule 19 (Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped) section mandates that if a ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by a ball in play and at rest, the player (Larry in this case) must play his ball as it lies and there is no penalty. Larry would have incurred a two stroke penalty had the same situation occurred when both balls were sitting on the green and his ball hit Tom s ball while putting.

CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNE 2008 Meet More Singles Enjoy More Out of Life! ASGA, through its member chapters, offer other events which allow you to meet singles from other chapters. All members are invited and encouraged to attend these Multi-Chapter Events. There s nothing like meeting up with a bunch of other singles for a weekend of golf. Each package is basically the same but there are differences, so we suggest you visit the website for the event. And, if you re chapter s interested in hosting one of these events, prepared to put a lot of work into it. But the reward of having singles play in your city and play your favorite courses is a life experience, well, hopefully! Contact ASGA to clear the date and then get your Board of Directors to give local approval. Then, start putting it together! The website for all events is really, really simple: www.singlesgolf.com/events (make sure events is in lower case!) Here are our multi-chapter events for the rest of the year: Sea Palms Weekend / St. Simon's Island - August 15-17, 2008. Hosted by the Jacksonville chapter. Tunica Getaway, Tunica, Mississippi - Sept. 8-10, 2008. Tunica is also known as "Little Las Vegas." Hosted by the Hot Springs, AR chapter. Go to the MY ACCOUNT button at our website, SinglesGolf.com and log-in. Forgot your log-in? It s real easy; just follow the simple instructions and we ll send it to you. A Mid-Year Report As we reach the middle of our calendar year, we look behind and we look forward. For chapter presidents, your job is halfway done! For most members, it s simply time for more golf. We value our membership in ASGA. We re all single and if we haven t done so already, we look forward to the potential of a great relationship. Many members have said they re not interested in meeting anyone, they just want to play more golf. But as the saying goes, we all have the word SINGLE on our foreheads. When you show up for a meeting, people know you re single. If you don t show-up for your membership meeting, think of your potential loss. Just about every member who s become attached with another member didn t expect it to happen that way, or right away. But unless you show-up in life, life won t show-up for you. We ve grown this past year primarily because you, our member, have taken a little time to spread the word about our organization. Our display stands have been a big reason for our growth, but they don t do us any good sitting in a closet. You have to request one and if you do, we re happy to ship one to you. So let us know simply by calling or e-mailing us. In October of each year, each chapter elects a new president for the term beginning January 1. So be thinking about who might best fill that position down the road. What Kind of Golf Do You Play? I recently spoke to a golf committee chair who was suggesting their chapter should not play by the USGA Rules of Golf. We just play for fun, he said. It got me to thinking: is it possible to play by the rules and have fun at the same time? Why do rules not make golf fun? Website Offers 32 Quick Lesson Videos It s pretty rare that I suggest golf websites to go to. There s simply too much out there on the dubya-dubya-dubya, but we came across one website that allows you to sit-back and enjoy some pretty interesting golf lessons. It s too long to put here, so it s been tiny-sized. Just go to TinyURL.com/3nhh57 - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
