RAY MATTER The Rays have won a season-high-tying eight straight games, the longest active streak in the majors and tied for the 3rd-longest in franchise history they are 9 games over.500 for the first time since the end of play on June 23, 2015 (41-32), and they are one shy of matching their high-water mark under fourth-year Manager Kevin Cash (40-30 through games of June 20, 2015) this marks the latest date the Rays have been at least 9 games over.500 since finishing the 2013 season at 92-71. The Rays are outscoring opponents, 41-12, over the 8-game winning streak during this span, they have only trailed at the end of six of 72 innings, and they have never faced a multi-run deficit. The Rays are 13-4 in their last 17 games and 66-48 (.579) since their 4-13 start this season tied for the worst in franchise history. This is the second of three consecutive series against division leaders, with the Rays coming off a 3-game sweep of the Red Sox. Tonight the Rays begin their penultimate road trip of the season, with games in Atlanta (2), Cleveland (3) and Toronto (3) the Rays went 5-4 on their last trip at TOR/NYY/BOS, which marked their first winning road trip since May 11-20 at BAL/KC/LAA (7-4). LONGEST WINNING STREAKS, FRANCHISE HISTORY Dates & Opponents Games Dates & Opponents Games June 9-22, 2004 (SF/COL/SD/ARI/TOR) 12 July 4-11, 2013 (HOU/CWS/MIN) 8 July 12-26, 2014 (TOR/MIN/STL/BOS) 9 Sep 19-27, 2012 (BOS/TOR/CWS) 8 Aug 19 Current (BOS/KC/BOS) 8 9/24/11 4/8/12 (TOR/NYY/NYY) 8 April 18-28, 2018 (TEX/MIN/BAL/BOS) 8 Six other winning streaks 7 WHERE WE STAND At 70-61, the Rays have the same record as the Dodgers and Phillies and a better record than the Nationals, Giants and Angels however, they are 19.5 GB of the Red Sox in the AL East and 8.5 GB of the Athletics for the AL s second Wild Card it s worth noting that with 31 games remaining in 2011, the Rays were 9.0 GB of the Red Sox in the AL East and 7.0 GB of the Yankees for the AL s lone Wild Card that season, the Yankees went on to win the division and the Rays passed the Red Sox on the final day of the season to clinch the AL Wild Card. The Rays are 16-8 (.667) in August, 3rd-best winning pct. in the majors, and 21-14 (.600) since the All-Star break, 5th in the majors. Despite identical records, the Rays have a 0.1 pct. chance of making the playoffs, according to ESPN.com, while the Dodgers have a 70.9 pct. chance and the Phillies have a 40.2 pct. chance the Dodgers are 2 GB in the NL West and the Phillies are 3.5 GB in the NL East, and both are 2.5 GB of the NL s second Wild Card in addition, a 70-61 team in the AL Central would be 4.5 GB of the division lead. THE WILL TO WIN The Rays are coming off a multi-series homestand sweep for the first time in franchise history, going 7-0 against the Royals (4-0) and Red Sox (3-0) they were the first team to sweep the Red Sox this season, and it was the third time in club history and second time this year they swept a series of 3 games (or more) against the team with the best record in the majors (June 22-24 vs. NYY and June 17-19, 2008 vs. CHC). This is the sixth time this season the Rays have won at least five straight games, tied with the Astros for most winning streaks of that type this also marks the first time in club history they ve recorded multiple winning streaks of 8+ games in the same season. SQUAD GOALS At 70-61, here is what the Rays would need to do in their remaining 31 games to reach the following records: REQUIRED FINISH TO REACH SEASON-ENDING RECORDS Record Finish Significance 81-81 11-20 Would be their best record under Manager Kevin Cash 82-80 12-19 Would be their first winning record since 2013 (92-71) 90-72 20-11 Would be their sixth 90-win campaign in 11 seasons as Rays RAYS vs. BRAVES This is the third of four meetings between the clubs this season the Rays lost, 1-0 and 5-2, in a 2-game series from May 8-9 at Tropicana Field the Rays are 10-20 (.333) all-time against the Braves, tied for their worst winning pct. against any opponent (Reds, 5-10) they are 4-7 on the road, including 1-2-1 in series play their only road series win was July 15-17, 2001 (2-1) they haven t played in Atlanta since May 19-20, 2015 (1-1), and this is their first time ever playing at SunTrust Park. The Rays are 6-12 in interleague play (3-7 at home, 3-5 on the road), their second losing interleague record since 2008 (7-11 in 2010) the Rays are 116-92 (.558) in IL play since 2008 5th-best in the majors and 190-196 all-time the NL is 137-123 (.527) in IL play this season, but the AL has won each of the last 14 season series. ROSTER MAKEOVER Thirteen players on tonight s active roster weren t on it for the series finale between the Rays and Braves on May 9 at Tropicana Field two were reinstated from the disabled list, five were acquired via trade and six were promoted from the minors (see below). Only three players have been on the club s active roster all season: C.J. Cron, Sergio Romo and Jesús Sucre only 15 of the 41 players from last year s season-ending active roster or disabled list remain in the organization, and only three of the 36 players from the 2016 season-ending roster or disabled list remain: Matt Duffy, Kevin Kiermaier and Blake Snell Kiermaier is the only player who was on the roster for Kevin Cash s managerial debut in 2015.
