The C3 World An Article from Mel Wolff The C3 generation of Corvettes consists of those manufactured from 1968 to 1982. In our club we have a handful, about 6, the majority appear to be C5 and C6, 1997 to 2013. Of the C3 s in the club many are unmodified with at least two being NCRS caliber. Mine on the other hand is modified in many areas. Even after owing the car for 42 years, I m still coming up with ways to change/improve things. My latest modification is a front suspension spreader bar. The C3 front cross member is notorious for the flimsy vertical attachment on the cross member where the upper a-arm bolts on. This weak point allows the upright to settle and flex inward, adversely changing the suspension geometry. For decades C3 s for the race track have had a tubular adjustable bar going across the space between the upper a-arms. In many cases these track cars have no engine driven fan so there is no clearance issue for the bar and the attachment bracket are welded to the frame. A number of companies have come out with a kit for street driven cars that do not require welding. Presently these kits only fit small block equipped cars do to clearance issues. I decided to try one of these kits from a company called Speed Direct. The attachment brackets are held on by the 4 upper control arm studs/nuts. The front of the car has to raised by the front cross member to allow the suspension to drop and retain the front suspension alignment shims since it will be necessary to remove the four nuts retaining the upper control arm cross shafts. Once the nuts are removed the brackets are installed over the studs and aligned forward and backward to get the best clearance between the engine fan and the water pump pulley. The nuts are then reinstalled to 50 ft/lb or if no room for the torque wrench a couple of large box wrenches interlocked. The tube with its two rod ends is assembled using anti-seize compound and shortened to its smallest length. The assembly is laid under the water pump pulley and one rod end attached to one of the brackets. At this point you discover how a 10 minute project turns into hours. With the number of alignment shims my car has the spreader bar assembly at its shortest is too long by about an 1/8. This discovery required disassembling the bar and cutting the tube by about a ¼ using a hacksaw and a makeshift cutting guide consisting of two hose clamps. Once reassembled the bar was installed without any further issue, except for one. Even though the attachment brackets were as far back as possible when turning the fan by hand the blades just kissed the spreader bar. Thankfully for companies like Summit Racing I was able to order a 3/8 fan spacer, a round aluminum block with a pilot in the center for the water pump and fan, made by March Engineering. With this spacer and switching from 1 bolts to 1 ¼ studs I was able to reinstall the fan with sufficient clearance. At this point I have not had a chance to drive the car much since the installation but I believe I do notice some more stability in the steering over uneven road surfaces. Next month I intend to bore the membership with my attempts to make my exhaust not quite as noisy as it currently is. 7
