2 Remember When Sweet Memories A little story (edited) from our fav website adelaiderememberwhen.com.au After partaking in way too many choccys over Chrissy time, let s take a sweet trip down memory lane to when Hoadleys boasted the Polly Waffle, Jaffas were made by a company called Sweetacres and came in a box, and a box of MacRobertson Old Gold had soft and hard centres. Candy, chocolate bars and lollies were a pretty rare treat in the good ol days Parents had very little spare income to spend on such indulgences for the kids, but occasionally there might be a 3d or a 6d from grandma or grandpa, a kind old great aunt, or something left in the bottom of the Christmas pillow case. My first memory of Jaffas was in the box. Jaffas were sold in movie theatres and gained iconic status because of the noise they made when dropped (accidentally or deliberately) and rolled down sloping wooden floors. Jaffas are still made in Australia by Allen s Sweets but sold in plastic bags! Polly Waffles first came onto the market in 1947, but in 2009 it was announced Polly Waffle were being discontinued after 62 years due to poor sales however for all the polly waffle lovers out there, a recent comeback was real good news! Interestingly the original Violet Crumble came to the market in 1913, when Hoadleys produced a chocolate assortment and packed them in a purple box decorated with violets. The packaging was in tribute to Mr Hoadley s wife, whose favourite colour was purple and favourite flower was violets. Remember when dad used to buy mum a box of MacRobertson Old Gold chocolates for her birthday and we d all get to choose a chocolate from the box. They were all in little brown patty pans and we d always like the hard centres because they lasted longer! Of course the lolly loving world also went into a spin when it was recently announced by Allens, spearmint leaves are going to disappear from our lolly jars as these days kids are more into the sours and out there flavours Kids today wouldn t know the pleasure of spending an afternoon collecting bottles so you could return to the shop and buy your lollies! Credit must certainly go to those very patient shopkeepers back then I will have 1 of them, 3 of those, 10 mins later.1 of those!! They were the good ol days! What are some of your memories of lollies and chocolates as you were growing up?
3 The very keen ressies broke their record in the Find a Word challenge last Friday December 22nd. The word was PSEUDOLAMELLIBRANCHIATE which is a genus of bivalve molluscs such as scallops and oysters. They found 750 words out of that one word and there was great excitement over that!
