FROM THE BRIDGE JULIE NOBLE, COMMODORE Well, I think I might be ready for fall - it has really been hot, hot, hot. Good time to be on or in the water though. It is the time of year to be thinking about our Flag Officers and Board of Governors for the 2017 year. The Nominating Committee consists of: Martin Jones, Dixie Huch, Edgie Dorris, Shelda Jones, Debbie Cox, Darrien Hill and Jim Noyes. If you would like to serve next year or know someone you would like to see serve, please let someone on the Committee know. The slate will be presented prior to the November General Membership Meeting and will be voted on at that time. I'd like to begin by thanking Sandy Pace for the great Friday night dinners, Thursday night desserts and cleaning out the flower beds by the pool with June Wiggins - thanks to June too. Next time you're at the club, check out the lady s downstairs bathroom - it has gotten a facelift thanks to Terri Oehmichen. Terri did a fantastic job and it looks really great. Thank you also to Terry Thomas for all the work you do (pool, bird spikes, etc.) at the club, Dana Burke for the many shopping trips for Thursday nights "" and to Charlie and Patty Coleman. (Charlie is in the process of doing a lot of work on the cat walk on the west side of our building as well as taking care of the lawn). There are a lot of folks doing so much to keep the club running; many "behind the scenes" tasks - I thank and appreciate you for your hard work and dedication to the club. We couldn't do it without you ALL. I want to mention one of our young sailors - Ricky Welch. He said this summer was by far the best! His first big regatta was the US Laser Nationals at Mentor, Ohio. Good sailing with 3-18 knots of breeze, finishing 13th out of 101 boats. His next regatta was the Laser North American Championship at Cascade Locks, Oregon. It blew over 15 knots (some days 20-35). He finished 9th out of 84 boats. His last regatta was the US Youth Champs at Coronado, California, which was an invitational only & was the toughest one this year. He finished 20th out of 43 boats. We are so proud of you Ricky - representing LBYC and your personal achievements - keep up the good work! We are continuing to have Karaoke with Ronnie Hammons which has been very successful and a lot of fun. We also want to remind everyone that our Membership Drive is still going on - you have a chance to earn a $100.00 bar/food credit by sponsoring a new member. Rear Commodore, Mike Moore, has taken on the task of heading up the campaign to raise funds for the new Viper 640. Details are in the newsletter. Our annual Luau is September 17 th and is always a great event. We are also having our 14 th Annual Junior Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, September 24 th. This is a fun event for the kids so bring your children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Craig Huch and the Elks Lodge are joining us this year and will be donating fishing rods & reels and bait for use during the rodeo. We are in need of sponsors ($100.00) so if you would like to be a sponsor or know someone who would, please call or text me @ 228-596-2888. Please check the calendar and Newsletter for upcoming events in September. Also, look for flyers and reminders that might be on our website, sent to you via email or on the tables at the club, and, as always, see you at your club. VIPER BOAT FUND DONATIONS: $1,990

FRIDAY NIGHT BELL RINGER It was a good month for the membership of the Long Beach Yacht Club. Friday evenings are benefiting from an increase in activity. You members are discovering that a delicious, inexpensive meal is served on Friday evenings, but for some that come late there is often no food left. And you missed happy hour. Since that increase in Friday night activity, we have had more winners of the $250 bar tab, two in the month of August. They were Julie Thomas and Ron Brown. Those that missed out were Bill Angley and Elvis Gates. Don't you miss out. Come visit on Friday evening and have yourself a good time. REAR COMMODORE MIKE MOORE Viper 640 The new Capdeville boat as of January 2018 At the 2015 semi-annual meeting at the Bay Waveland Yacht Club, the Board of Directors of the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) voted to replace the Flying Scot with the Viper 640 as the Capdeville boat. What does that mean to us at the Club? We need to raise the money to purchase a Viper 640 for our sailors to stay and compete in the GYA. This month we have started a campaign to raise the money for this slick, fast, one-design sailboat. Our goal is to raise enough money to purchase the Viper 640 by June 2017. This will ensure our sailors will have enough time on the water to establish a competitive advantage in sailing this boat for the 2018 sailing season. Please consider donating through your monthly membership dues or at the bar. More details to follow in our quest for the Viper 640. HOUSE COMMITTEE DANA BURKE I hope September brings some cooler weather. I am ready for a break from the heat. September is our LUAU month, so keeping that in mind, our "Drink of the Month" will be the Blue Hawaii - rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice, sweet & sour orange juice. Sounds refreshing to me. Mark your calendars for our LUAU on Saturday, September 17 th. Great food and entertainment. Plan to be there. I want to thank Sandy Pace for all the great desserts she makes for Thursday's "Grill your Own" and for all the wonderful dinners she prepares for Friday night.
