James Crocitto Director of Food & Beverage Tricia Mayes Membership Accounts Receivable FOOD & BEVERAGE I remember when I was about 9 years old going to Pinecrest Lake in the Sierra Nevada s. Our family would go every summer to enjoy the fishing, the beach, and the sailing. I started off sailing on a 17 foot Laser. These boats are designed for speed, and we would race other boats on the lake. A few summers later my older brother managed to buy an 18ft Hobie Cat. This boat had 2 hulls and a trampoline between them; it was also outfitted with what is called a trapeze. This trapeze allows the sailor to hang over the edge of the boat traveling at great speeds, while only one hull is in the water (flying hull). You were harnessed in and attached by wire to the top of the mast. What a rush that was, and to this day my brother still has a Hobie on Pinecrest Lake. The last time I was there we went out, and it was just like we were kids all over again. Sailing is something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime, and now your kids have an opportunity to experience it for themselves. Turtle Point Sailing Camp will be held June 2nd thru the 6th right here at the Club. Captain Chip Flournoy will be instructing kids 6 to 16 (limited to the first 18) on the finer points of sailing in his 34 foot boat named Reverie. Kids will be promoted in rank as they advance their skills throughout the week. By Friday, they will have mastered such things as boat safety, terminology, knot tying, navigation, chart reading, anchoring, docking and so much more. On Friday afternoon, there will be a ceremony (parents are encouraged to attend) where the kids will receive their certificate of completion by the captain. This opportunity will be remembered for a lifetime. Best Regards, James Crocitto CCM MEMBERSHIP CONNECTION It s that exciting time of the year again at Turtle Point with the golf course turning green, the pool opening, and dining rooms filling up each evening. The flowers are in bloom, and the calendar is packed with many exciting Member Events. What better time to bring your friends or associates out and showcase your Club! We are proud of what TP has to offer and hope that we can grow our Membership this season. For the months of June and July, anyone that recruits a new member and is primary sponsor will receive 2 months dues credit for the new member s category and also will receive a gift card for one for two. HOUSE NEWS & EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager The transition from Spring to Summer brings many fun events to Turtle Point and will hopefully bring you and your family out even more often to enjoy the great amenities and special events here at your Club. Events are planned for the entire family. Make your reservations now to treat Dad to our Father s Day on, June 16. This year, we are having our own Kids Sailing Camp, June 2-6, and another scheduled for the month of July. Sign your child up now for this unique, fun-filled camp with Captain Chip Flournoy and his sailboat Reverie. Sailing camp launches at 8am and docks at 5pm each day. Make plans to attend our Boaters Weekend, July 25-27. This year s theme will be the Love Boat. We would like to thank all those who contributed to the Quarterdeck Renovations, especially members Debbie Darby and Connie Barnes. As you all know, our area experienced our coldest winter temperatures in at least 25 years. Please assist us on the golf course by obeying the cart path rules and avoiding areas which exhibit excessive wear. And, as always, repair your ball marks. Our largest charity event, The Healing Place Tournament will be Monday June 2, 2014. We are very proud and honored once again to host such a rewarding event. Mark your calendars for all of the fun activities happening at your Club. Hope to see you at your Club soon & often! The 10th Annual Turtle Point Old Waverly Challenge was held at Turtle Point on May 17 and 18. The rain shortened event was won by the Turtle Point Terrapins with a score of 25-14. In the photo (L to R), OW Golf Professional, Chris Jester; TP s Bill Colloredo; OW Captain, Cecil Chiles; TP Captain, Bill McGuire; and TP Head Golf Professional, Les Holcombe SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Glen Junkin, GCS Golf Course Superintendent This is the 1st time since 1996 that there has been a winter severe enough to cause damage to many of the warm season grasses that we have on the golf course. According to Chris Hartwiger, Director of the USGA Course consulting service, The Winter had a profound effect on golf facilities across much of the country. While bermudagrass greens that were covered have emerged from the winter in excellent condition, extensive damage to bermudagrass tees, fairways and roughs have been reported. The damage that we have is mostly in shady areas that receive a lot of cart and or foot traffic. Several of these areas are on tees and fairways and many others are in the rough where carts enter or exit the fairway. Most of these areas will grow-in on their own with a little extra fertilizer, but there are others that will have to be sodded due to large areas with no living grass. During this time of grow-in please be mindful of these areas and avoid them. If everyone will help us by obeying the cart signs during this time, it will be much appreciated. Glen Junkin, Golf Course Superintendent An example of a bermudagrass area severely damaged by this past winter s weather. The causes: low temperatures, traffic and shade.
