2 MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Dennis Morgan Club President Dear fellow members, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the trust you have placed in me and asking me to serve as your President for the upcoming two year term. This place is very special to all of us; it s where we come to relax, to see our friends, to golf, eat, swim and play, and where we celebrate special occasions in our lives. This is a place where a lot of my family memories have been made, and I m sure the same is true of you and yours. Our club has seen many changes in its long life, and there will be many more. Our responsibility, going forward, is to ensure that we work within our budgets to maintain this place we love so much, so that our children and children s children will continue to make memories here. I hope that the coming years will see new ideas about ways to attract members, and new ways to use our resources to continue to support this place of which we are so proud. I am excited about the work that lies ahead of us, and am most excited about the opportunity to work with so many of you to make exciting things happen here. Thank you again for your trust and support. Here s to many, many years ahead of memory making at Turtle Point. TENNIS NEWS The Mental Game Competitive tennis has a way of destroying many people s confidence. I like to pose the following situation to my students. On a typical day there are a total of 30 USTA matches being played in the area. Do you think everyone wants to win? The answer is yes. But I can guarantee you 50% are going to lose. Putting pressure on yourself to win every match or play well all the time is not realistic and is a key factor in confidence. Here are some tips that will help you get and keep confidence. Mike Claiborne USPTA Tennis Professional Breast Cancer Tennis Event Peggy and I have helped organize and direct a terrific Tennis Fundraiser for Breast Cancer on October 28th at Cox Creek Tennis Center. Approximately 56 ladies competed in a fun round robin event. Lunch was included and many door prizes were given away. Over $14, was raised! All of these funds go to help Breast Cancer patients pay their bills while going through cancer treatments. Set the right kind of match goals. Confidence is directly tied to perceived success. The more consistent your diet of success, the more stable your confidence. Set performance related goals rather than outcome goals. The most typical outcome goal is to win the match. A typical performance related goal might be to come in behind all 2nd serves from your opponent in doubles, swing at the right speed on groundstrokes (not too tentative), hit every backhand crosscourt in singles or put topspin on all forehands. Find success in your losses. If losing is equated with failure, the battle of confidence cannot be won. Let s say you lost the match, but you did accomplish your performance goal of hitting every backhand crosscourt. Maybe you come off the court positive and upbeat knowing your backhand is improving and wins are just around the corner. Your motto should be win or lose, another step forward. (1127) Tennis is definitely a mental game. When you set your goals properly, your confidence can continue to grow independent of your match outcome. Finally, have you ever seen someone have a lot of success in a particular sport and lack confidence? Pickleball We have completed all pickleball play for the year. Pickleball was introduced to the club for the first time on September 29th. What a fun and exciting sport that the whole family can enjoy! We had over 50 different people come out and give it a shot. It is so much fun to get new faces out to the tennis courts. Be looking for more pickleball in the spring of TPYCC TENNIS (256) e: tptennis@tpycc.org w: turtlepointtennis.usptapro.com

5 POOL, WELLNESS & COMMUNICATIONS Peggy Claiborne Pool & Wellness & Communication Director WELLNESS December can be a happy time for some and a very stressful time for others. Below are a few ideas to destress your holidays: Make a budget for the holidays and stick with it. This way you will make 2018 a little less stressful. Do something special for others in need. Helping others helps you ward off depression, improves self esteem, can lead to better health and a longer life. ( Take time everyday for yourself to relax, organize your thoughts, and plan out your upcoming day. Bring a book with you when you go shopping in case you have to wait in long lines. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others by eating right, getting plenty of rest and exercising daily. Yes, the temperature is getting colder but that is no reason to stop exercising. We are still walking the golf course and having cardio tennis. Walk with a group on Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:15 am. Text Peggy Claiborne at to let her know that you will be walking. Walking/Jogging - you can come out to the golf course and walk or jog the front 9 holes (2.6 miles) before 8:00 am or the back 9 holes (2.3 miles) before 8:30 am, Tuesday through Sunday. The cart paths are marked with a blue or green turtle. The front 9 is a blue turtle and the back 9 is a green turtle. If you would like a guide call Peggy Claiborne at Cardio Tennis - Tuesdays and Friday mornings at 9:00 am. Text Mike Claiborne at COMMUNICATIONS: In order to enhance our communication to our members at Turtle Point we will be introducing an optional text messaging program. Club members can receive information about things happening at the club, exclusive promotions offered in our sports areas and dining venues. Management and Staff have the capability to reach out to our membership in case of an emergency or closure at the club. Send a text to In the message box type TPYCC. You will receive a message back telling you how to accept the texting program. Type Yes. Then you will receive another message asking you which groups you would like to be in: * TPTennis, TPMarina, TPGolf, TPEvents. You will need to type those in one at a time. After that you will be in the system to receive text messages from the club. Other ways to find out what is happening at Turtle Point: Facebook Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club Instagram turtle_pointycc If you currently do not receive the weekly s and would like to be added to the list please me at pclaiborne@tpycc.org.
6 CLUBHOUSE NEWS & EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Mark Grisham General Manager As we close out our fiscal year and head into the holiday season it is a good time to reflect on We had a great year overall here at Turtle Point with membership being a net positive of 11 members for the year versus a negative 14 the previous year. Additionally, we made some much needed changes in our appearance with new window treatments in the clubhouse, new landscaping on the golf course, remodeled bathrooms at the pool, and our Tiki bar. As wonderful as these physical changes are they don t make as much of an impact as what hasn t changed: the staff here at Turtle Point. We are certainly blessed with long tenured managers here Mike Claiborne, Glen Junkin, and Altha Caperton with over 20 years experience each Tricia Mayes, Jorge Trejo, and Beverly Hudson with over 15 years experience each Pam and Les with 10 years experience each and now some newer additions of Sam Goss, Peggy Claiborne, Kyle Ogden, and myself to add to the mix. The long tenure staff help us with the continuation of traditions, and the newer staff help us think outside the box and push (or pull) us into new and exciting areas. I want to thank all of the management staff for the wonderful year we just completed and all of the hard work that went into this record year is going to be another fun year for us as we keep looking forward to new possibilities at Turtle Point. The dreams are many as we discuss the potential projects to enhance the club and our member s experiences with overnight accommodations with cottages on property, clay tennis courts, new bunkers, and a possible Marina expansion. None of these are set in stone at the moment, just areas that I feel are important enough to look into deeper to continue the growth and attraction of your club. As always if there is anything I can do for you please don t hesitate to call. FROM THE BRIDGE Harold Kimbrough Commodore On behalf of the Bridge we want to thank Becky Mauldin on the great job she has done for our club, and look forward to working with Dennis Morgan in the time ahead. Our annual Labor Day trip to Guntersville Yacht Club was a huge success this year, thanks to a great job by our host. We had what I believe is a record 11 boats this year from Turtle Point. We had a great time renewing old friendships and making new ones from Guntersville and Chattanooga. Thanks again to Guntersville Yacht Club for a great weekend. With summer coming to a close and the fall leaves beginning to show up it s a great time to get out on the lake. With the temperatures cooling down, traffic is at a slower pace, time to enjoy. Remember to mark your calendars for the Parade of Lights which will be on the 16th of December. You have plenty of time to get your decorations ready to make the Best of Show. Hope we can have a big turnout this year. PS: We have been looking into some things we can do to enhance the safety and appearance of docks this off season. Anyone with suggestions please let me or Mark know and we will look at them.
