Vol. XXXIII, No. 3 Official Publication President's Report by Gary Campbell It's unbelievable how fast time is going. It s time for another newsletter article. We have had some great dances. The Toys for Tots was a big success and the board wants to thank everybody for their generosity. I am sure you made a lot of kids happy for Christmas. The Christmas dance was a blast with great music. The New Year's Eve dance was a huge success, we had almost 40 people there and everyone had a great time. If we didn't see you at any of these dances, here's hoping you had a great time too. Hopefully we'll be seeing you sometime this year at one of the dances coming up. The board wants to thank everyone that comes early to help set up and stays late to breakdown. Your help is greatly appreciated. The board also would like to thank all the teachers and DJ's for their hard work in making the dances fun and interesting. We want to thank all of you that come out. We know there are other things to do, but your attendance is what keeps the Association going. I also want to thank the board for making my job so easy. Remember, everyone comes to the dances to have fun. If something goes wrong, please consider it just a mistake and let it go. It's not worth ruining your night and good mood. In other words, just have fun. With the start of a new year I hope everyone has a great year. Hope to see you on the dance floor soon. Let's roll into this new year dancing and having a good time. Northern Virginia Country-Western Dance Association Newsletter Thank you for all the Toys For Tots Contributions! Great Opportunity! Elections Coming Up! We need you! Please consider running for a position on the board. We would be thrilled to have you join in either as an official member of the board or as an assistant to support someone in a board member position. An offer of teamwork might be all that is needed help someone make the decision to step forward and take on a position. NVCWDA Inclement Weather Policy Dances will be canceled whenever Saturday activities in the Fairfax County Government offices are canceled. The status of government offices will be displayed on the Neighborhood and Community Services page. The only dances held at Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church (AUUC) are Jan. 19, Feb. 16, and the New Year's Eve dance. There is a chance that the dance on July 6 will need to be moved since July 4 is a Thursday and Fairfax Membership Report by Bernie Vitale Being the figurehead of the Membership Committee, I would like to thank Eric Vondra who does 99% of the Membership work while I sit on the County could extend the holiday through the weekend. In the past the dances at AUUC started and ended later than those at Lincolnia. For consistency the board decided to start and end dances at both venues at the same times, 6:00-7:00 Lessons, 7:00-9:30 Open Dancing. Be sure to check the Association website, nvcwda.org for details on dances, lessons, and instructors. Bruce board in his place. Thank you Eric! It would be great if other people could help existing board members in the same way. We have 96 members. Seven trial members signed up last year, three became regular members. To the NVCWDA members and non-members alike. We would like to thank all of you first of all for attending our dances. As Gary reminds us, we wouldn't exist without you. There is a huge amount of help that keeps our association going. To the board, thank you for volunteering! I know it can be lots of work at times and is very appreciated. We must have you there or our association could not continue. There are a great many who put time in both where it is obvious and behind the scenes. Thank You: Kerie and Bruce, for all your work on the website and logo; Marie- Luce, for the photo booth for NYE! (see page 4); Rick for setting up the New Year's Eve tickets; all you teachers out there old and new; Eric for handling membership duties; Eric and Debbie for email reminders; Debbie for assembling welcome bags and for helping proof the newsletter; Karen, Eileen, Kat and Bernie for t-shirts (not sure who else worked on those); leaders and members of the demo team and Sam and Rich for helping with music; DJ's; everyone who submits photos and articles for this newsletter; all the extra helpers for special events, quilt makers and cooks; set up and clean up crews; people who unlock the doors; all those not listed here! How Can I Help? Good Question! Set up the room before and reset it after a dance Contribute snacks and help with snack table setup/breakdown Train to be able to open/close Lincolnia Senior Center (must be a resident of Fairfax County) Help load/unload supplies (for the DJ, the treasurer, the snack table) Help with special events (check with Rosa) Teach a lesson (check with Linda Bloyer) Join the board Partner with an existing or potential board member as background support. Dance Director position has expanded, help needed with the Demo Team! Assist a board member covering desk duties (or keep them company) Welcome newcomers Help Linda Bloyer teach Two-Step in the hallway 2

Dance Director's Report by Linda Bloyer Happy New Year to All! It s time for getting going again in a new year of dancing. DJs are scheduled, and lessons are being arranged. The Demo team is planning to perform 4-6 times this year. Performances will be posted on the website as they are scheduled. If you re available, head on out to support the team. Better yet, consider joining the fun. The only requirement is current membership in NVCWDA and a desire to dance. The dances we do are mostly ones that are done at regular dances. We do line dances and partner dances. You don t need to have a partner, although we would love to welcome a few more couples. If you need to learn a few of the dances, we ll teach you. Our first couples practice will be held at Lincolnia Senior Center 2/2 at 5 p.m. If you have questions, you can chat with any member of the team, Kat, or me. If you worried about how much time it takes, our practice time is minimal. The couples normally practice early before dances at Lincolnia. Bernie and Lydia generally have a line dance practice just before a performance at their Friday lessons in Sterling for those who can make it. We do dress alike, but it s only the blue NVCWDA shirts (available through Bernie) and either black pants or skirt. I am still hoping to add some new faces to the instructor line-up. You don t need to commit to more than once, although it does get easier after the first time or two. You only need to choose something that you know well and share what you know with others. If you have any interest in sharing your dance knowledge with others, please let me know. In case you missed this information: Dances at AUUC will now follow the same schedule as the dances at Lincolnia. Hopefully, we can eliminate a bit of confusion. We also will no longer have lessons at special dances when there s a potluck dinner. That really only changes things for the Benefit Dance and the Anniversary Dance. Hope to see you at the next dance! Linda New Year's Eve 2018 3

Board Meeting Summary - October 7th Secretar y/jeff is now the registered agent for the Association with the Virginia State Corporation commission. Dance Director/Linda noted that lessons were arranged for dances through the end of the year (2018) but at the time of the meeting she needed a disc jockey for the New Year s Eve dance. Linda also noted that the demo group had one event left for the rest of the year, at Waltonwood in Ashburn. Notes from the Treasurer/Bernard: Some of the Assocation money has been moved into short-term certificates of deposit. The cash register needed replacing. A motion was made and approved to purchase a new one. A suggestion was made to set up a PayPal account for the Association. Bernard will look in to it. A possible dance location of Sully District Fairfax County Government Center was brought up. MailChimp was suggested as a way to send out the newsletter. Dance schedules for 2019 were discussed. 5th Saturday dances are a possibility again. Designs for a new logo for the Association are in the works. A suggestion was brought to the board from Marie-Luce to have a photo booth at the NYE dance. Ticket prices were approved to stay the same as last year. A request was made and appoved to have the time of the dance at Accotink match the time at Lincolnia. There will be no lessons at the special events dances that include pot luck dinners. The next meeting is scheduled for January 20, 3-5 p.m. at Fairfax County Library. New Year's Eve 2018 Photo Booth Fun Treasurer's Report by Bernard Ferret Our finances are in great shape! We finished the year with $12,552.44 in the bank and $200 in cash in our new shiny red cash register. For the quarter ending in December, we had a loss of $1,096.73, as we pre-paid some of our 2019 expenses (insurance, our FastDance association membership, and the 2019 Lincolnia space rental). The New Year's Eve dance was great! We had 35 paid tickets, for a total of $955, but to pay for the fun, we spent a bit over $1,200. 4
