Gelandesprung Gazette 34 years and still going downhill. www.gelandesprung.org May 2004 Past Pres Signs Off It was a great season. Many of us will remember it as the year that the two clubs went to Switzerland with a stop in Italy. Memories like the Matterhorn last a lifetime. Others will remember going out West to Utah for that Real Mountain skiing. This was the year the club tried a New Years trip to Lutsen. And, as always, the weekend trips were excellent. We couldn t have asked for better weekend snow this year! This year we can remember a smooth crossing into Canada! None of this would have been possible without the work of all the board members, people in the volunteer positions and trip leaders. We even drafted some rookie trip leaders this year. The board, volunteers and trip leaders did a fantastic job. If you have not gotten involved yet, I encourage you to take the step. You ll get to know some great people in the club a little better and have fun doing it! Our social committee gave us excellent opportunities to keep in contact with each other last summer with a wide variety of events and Kevin has things organizing again for this summer! By the looks of things we should have plenty of opportunity to keep in contact with our ski friends this summer as well. Be sure to mark your calendars so that you don t miss out. Yes, the past season was a great season, but it is going to get even better. We have started looking ahead to 2005. The CMSC Ski Show is taking place on May 15th in Chicago. This is where the club searches for the best ski trip deals. We will have new trips to go on and new members to welcome into the club, and that means more friends. Encourage your friends who are not yet members to check out some of the summer events. We ve elected a new board and have excellent leadership to take us into the new season. With your continued enthusiasm and membership renewals this club will continue to thrive. I have enjoyed serving the club! See you this summer. Jeannene, Past President Spring Banquet The ski season has ended, but not without one last party! Oh what a show! Thanks to club members donating photos and Don Steffens' work, there were albums and poster board wall displays for all to view and reminisce. A thanks goes to Brian Fowle for a projector. During happy hour and dinner we enjoyed viewing over 700 digital photos of this years ski trips on the big screen! AWARDS Mike Bast - Obtuse Award for painted toenails? Kevin Klausen - Ski Trash Award (to member who skis the most days during the year) Senny Wagner for the Old-timers Award (Gag Award) Senny signed up for every club trip and skis every week with the senior citizens) Brian Fowle - Ski Garbage Award (Gag Award) Brian went on a nine-day ski trip out West and skied three days? Ask him for details. Penny Holman - Excellence in Publishing and having an article from our own Newsletter picked up and printed in the Midwest Ski Magazine. Not as much as years past was it so Spring like. We had an uneventful trip to Marquette and many enjoyed a fun and relaxing time in the bar after arrival. Back to the spring thing, the weather did not cooperate with the plans Marquette Mountain made for Spring Carnival. Cold and windy weather (40 mph wind gusts?) made it seem more like January. But we said we came to ski. Conditions were not too bad, bit icy due to the wind blowing. The future Olympic Team took to the race course. Three Gold medals, two Silver medals, three Bronze medals, and one thrill of victory crash later. The team and everyone else did the hillside BBQ. Saturday night seemed pretty low key, no big time stories. Sunday turned into a WHITE OUT snow storm at times. The wind helped that out. But again we said we came to ski. The pig roast was excellent, as usual. The Spring Carnival events were held as scheduled anyway. Unfortunately, the Slush Bowl. was cancelled for the second year in a row due to leaks in the bowl. The fire hose race went off as planned, with the Gelandesprung Ski Club making a bid for a gold medal by putting up a crackerjack team. But, sadly, our team did not medal. After one fall, the team scrambled to get back on the course, but the fearless leader, who shall remain nameless (Gary) took off before all the members were ready to go! Our team was disqualified after not making it to the bottom intact! I think you have to hang on to the hose, oh well, looked like fun. As for the Obtuse award it was won by Bill Wanie, with his lay down edge control lesson. Ski instructor Tom VanderLinden had a bit to do with it, as Tom said to Bill as he lay on the hill, How s it working for ya. The Funky Chicken award, was won by Dick Wortiska with his Thrill of Victory crash. Despite the wintry weather, we had a great time at Marquette s Spring Carnival. A special THANKS to the following for all their help, Ann Miller, movie director. Gary Austin, assistant, and Mary Lou Kuske for everything she does. Last but not least, the Board for all their hard work. Carl Williquette, Trip Leader
