CALLING ALL YOUNG DANCERS. WHATEVER YOUR STYLE, SHOW US WHAT YOU VE GOT! We re searching for the city s most exciting young dancers, choreographers and all round movers and shakers to perform in MK Gallery s brand new auditorium in spring 2019. WHY DANCE? Dance is the expression of ideas, emotions and relationships through physical movement of the body. It is a powerful impulse rooted within humanity that spans cultures throughout history. When channelled with imagination and thought, it becomes an art form consisting of many genres and styles which are constantly evolving. Dance is a creative experience that anyone can take part in use it to get fit, create art or simply to have fun. COMPETITION THEME: TRANSFORMATION To alter; to revamp; to revolutionise - these are just a few words that describe what it means to transform. MK Gallery is transforming. INFORMATION ON HOW TO ENTER WHO CAN ENTER? Anyone aged 7-19* and living or being educated in MK can enter. There are four age categories: 7 to 10 years, 11 to 13 years, 14 to 16 years and 17 to 19 years. The competition is open to nonprofessionals only and no previous dance experience is necessary. You can dance solo or as part of a group of up to 10 dancers. *You must be aged 7 19 on 31 July 2019 to enter. WHAT KIND OF DANCE CAN I SUBMIT? You can enter one original choreographed dance per person or per group. Your dance must respond to the theme of transformation but can be in any genre or style. It can be choreographed by another person or by you. To enter, you are asked to submit a 1 minute video clip of your dance but if shortlisted, you will be invited to deliver a live performance of 3-5 minutes. The performance space available will be approximately 8m 6m. WHAT CAN I WEAR? Please wear clothing that is comfortable and appropriate. It must allow the judges to see the movement and lines of your choreography clearly e.g. a simple leotard and loose bottoms or tights; or a vest top and tracksuit bottoms. CAN I USE PROPS? You are welcome to use small props as part of your performance. Your props must be easily transported - if shortlisted, you will need to be able to deliver these to MK Gallery. www.onedanceuk.org
WHAT KIND OF SOUND CAN I USE? Your chosen sound accompaniment can be any of the following: instrumental; orchestral; spoken word; silence; natural sound; found sound; body percussion. If shortlisted, you must be able to provide a high quality (electronic, if applicable) version of your sound accompaniment for use during the live show. HOW DO I SUBMIT MY WORK? The deadline for entry is MONDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2019. Incomplete entries or entries received after this deadline will not be considered. To enter, please submit one digital video, not exceeding 1 minute in length, accompanied by a completed entry form. An electronic version of the entry form is available at www.mkgallery.org. Please title all digital files with your name or the name of your group. You can share your entry with us in one of the following ways: Upload a private video to YouTube and email a link to youngdancer@mkgallery.org. Transfer a file or link online via WeTransfer to youngdancer@mkgallery.org. HOW IS THE WINNER SELECTED? Shortlisted entrants will be invited to perform their dance live on SATURDAY 27 APRIL 2019. This will be viewed by a panel of judges and an audience as part of a special public event in MK Gallery s new auditorium. The judges will consider: the originality and imaginativeness of choreographic content including the use of actions; dynamics; space; relationships; and structure of the dance choreographic intention including relationship to the competition theme ability to perform and connect with the audience WHAT ARE THE PRIZES? Certificates will be presented to all shortlisted entrants and one dancer/ group in each age category will be highly commended. The overall winner will receive: A special goody bag including a Swan Lake programme signed by Matthew Bourne. An invitation to perform as part of the MÓTUS festival, 17-19 May 2019. An exciting prize for their school or dance school.
