CGHS Pom/Dance Team Information The Cary-Grove Varsity and Junior Varsity Pom/Dance Teams are committed to excellence, while representing themselves, their school, their coaches, and their families with pride and class. We are a select group who act as a spirit squad and a highly competitive competition team. We cooperate with the school and the community to promote good citizenship and school spirit. As a team, we work to become better people, stronger dancers, reliable team members, and strong leaders. The following information has been prepared to acquaint you with the CGHS Pom/Dance Team Program. The coaches and administration would like you to know exactly what is expected of you, should you be selected as a member of this team. *WE ENCOURAGE ALL PARENTS AND CANDIDATES TO READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY!* 1. TRY-OUT CLINICS There will be TWO clinics held on Tuesday, May 9 th and Wednesday, May 10 th from 3:00-6:00 p.m starting in the Upper Gym. All forms must be completed and turned in to Coach Bachta on (or before) Tuesday, May 9 th by 3:30 p.m. or you will not be able to participate in the clinics. All candidates will learn TWO short routines as well as proper technique for leaps, turns, jumps, and tricks. Attendance is mandatory unless cleared by the coach. Attached is a checklist to help you prepare for the clinics. 2. TRY-OUTS Try-outs will begin promptly at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 th in the Upper Gym. Each candidate will try-out with the same routines and will be judged by qualified coaches and/or experienced dancers. Those who make the team will be informed Thursday evening after tryouts by phone! Phone calls will be made to those who make the Varsity & JV Dance Team no later than 8:30p.m. 3. PRACTICE SCHEDULE Summer (June-August)- It is STRONGLY encouraged that dancers attend all practices when possible. We will practice 1-2 days/week (except camp week). We will have practices for team bonding, to practice/enhance skills, condition, learn choreography for competition routines, and prepare for UDA camp! SUMMER CAMP: This year Cary Grove Poms will attend the Universal Dance Association (UDA) summer camp held at Wheaton College-Wheaton, IL from 6/27-6/30. The cost will be about $370 per pom. This includes overnight amenities such as lodging and food, as well as intensive dance skills/technique classes/choreography taught all 3 days, descriptive feedback/awards given to individual dancers (and groups), teambuilding, and routines we can use for halftime performances. Attendance at camp is STRONGLY encouraged as this is a vital component of team building/bonding and learning new material for the season. We are hoping to compete in a home routine competition this year; therefore we will have practices before camp to prepare. Football Season (August-October)-Dancers will practice 2-3 days a week after school.

Exact days and times will vary depending on Varsity or JV & will be discussed at first meeting with both teams. Additional practices may be added from time to time as the team feels needed. We will perform at ALL home football games as well as be a part of all homecoming activities that week! Basketball/Competition Season (October- February)-Dancers will practice 3-4 days a week. Practices may be added from time to time as the team feels needed. For example, we will be having a dress rehearsal the day before each competition. We will perform at ALL home basketball games as well as compete in regional and state competitions held on Saturdays and Sundays. The amount of competitions as well as dates will vary depending on Varsity or JV level and will be discussed at first meeting for both teams. 4. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parent support of the Cary Grove Competition Pom/Dance Program is vital to the success of the team! We want to develop a strong CG Pom family amongst and between the Varsity and JV teams. Parents are encouraged to attend all games and competitions and will be asked to assist with fundraising during the season if needed. Parents will also be asked to host and/or contribute to a Pasta Party that we will be having the evening before every competition. This is to promote team bonding the night before as well as get a good meal (& rest) before a long day! 5. COST Breakdown of costs will be given at the first meeting but will be approximately $300 for the purchase of team shoes, socks, camp wear, team pants, competition apparel, and other apparel they would like to purchase as a team. New members will also need to purchase football shoes. If enough fundraising is done, competition uniforms as well as other apparel will be paid for by fund. This will all be discussed further at first team meeting. 6. COMPETITIONS These dates will be given and described in more detail at first team meeting. 7. CODE OF CONDUCT Once selected for the team, you will receive a copy of the Pom Code of Conduct with rules set forth by the coach and the Athletic Training Rules set forth by Cary Grove High School and District 155. It is your responsibility to abide by these rules. Furthermore, please know that attendance at all practices, games, and functions is mandatory. During your season, academics and Poms come first! 8. MANDATORY 1 ST MEETING for JV & Varsity Team 2017 A MANDATORY meeting for all Poms will be held once the team has been selected. Date, time, and place TBA. The meeting will be a chance to meet one another and to discuss camp, our first fundraiser, and practice/competition schedules. Feel free to direct any other questions you may have regarding the CGHS Pom program to Lana Bachta via email at Lbachta@d155.com CGHS School Rules and Policies

Please read through and review all the responsibilities and expectations required of you, and be sure you understand your role as Cary Grove Pom. Please also review the Cary Grove Athletic Code of Conduct located on the 8 to 18 athletic page (found on the CG website). All dancers must have a current Physical on file with the Athletic Department. You may not practice or participate until an updated physical is received. Register on 8 to 18 if you have NOT done so already! Dancers must be present in school at least 4 periods during the day in order to be eligible for practice or performances that day. Otherwise, it will be counted as an absence. All dancers must be passing 5 academic classes or 25 credit hours, in order to be eligible to participate in all Pom events. Your progress will be monitored and your coach will notify you if you fall below the mark. This may result in short term or long term ineligibility. When traveling to and from competitions, you must be on the bus with the squad. The only exception is when parents have signed the Travel Release form and received permission from the dean or administrator to transport their child to or from the event. Dancers are always encouraged to be involved with as many activities as they wish, but they must understand that if these other activities start to negatively affect their performance or attendance, changes must be made. This may mean being an alternate or sitting out of a game due to poor attendance or changing spot in formation due to lack of commitment. Dancers will receive notification before any action is taken. If a dancer has a conflict of any sort, they are to list it on the conflict sheet given to them at the 1 st meeting. If something comes up last minute they are to let their coach know ASAP and an excused or unexcused absence will be decided upon coaches discretion. Calendars will be given at the first Pom/Parent meeting so there will be plenty of time for dancers to let coaches know of conflicts that may arise. It is expected that dancers will attend all practices and performances unless previously discussed ( excused ) with coach ahead of time. DRINKING, SMOKING, DRUGS, AND MALICIOUS ACTS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!! POSESSION AND/OR CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS AND/OR ALCOHOL WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES AS SET FORTH BY CARY-GROVE HIGH SCHOOL! VIOLATION OF ANY OF THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN LOSING ELIGIBILITY, BASKETBALL GAMES, AND/OR COMPETITIONS. POSSESION IS A VIOLATION.
