Dear Community Partner, Have you ever known anyone who has struggled with substance use? Chances are you do. Problematic substance use occurs in every community - affecting people of all ages from every walk of life. We often hear about people who have already developed a problem, but we need to focus on prevention and early intervention; engaging with people long before substance use becomes a problem. At the Phoenix Centre, we partner with over 1500 youth, family members, and adults every year who are struggling with substance use. We provide different programs and treatments, seeking new and engaging ways to connect with young people and offer them healthy alternatives. Whether a youth is using, or has a friend or family member using, the impacts can be devastating. By connecting with at-risk youth early on, creating a community of belonging, and engaging them in healthy activities, we can make an enduring and positive impact in their lives. The Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp is about giving youth an opportunity to engage in healthy activity and to connect them to a community where they feel welcome and supported, so that they can make positive choices in life. This camp is fully funded through the generous support of community donors and sponsors. Your donations literally change the lives of these young men. Please support our cause and help us prevent substance use from becoming an issue in the lives of our young men. Our goal is to raise $35,000 to bring 25 male youth into our camp. Individuals who donate will receive a tax receipt. Businesses and organizations looking to sponsor the event will receive sponsor benefits according to the sponsorship level, and In-kind donations are welcome. Businesses or individuals can support the camp by providing food, transportation, bike shuttling, prizes, and promotional support, or volunteering. We welcome your support in bringing the Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp to the youth at-risk in our community. Warm Regards, The Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp is about giving youth an opportunity to engage in healthy activity and to connect them to a community where they feel welcome and supported, so that they can make positive choices in life. - Sian Lewis Executive Director, Phoenix Centre Sian Lewis, MSW, RSW Executive Director Ph: 250.374.6434 E: sian.lewis@phoenixcentre.org W: www.phoenixcentre.org
ASHES TO DUST MOUNTAIN BIKE CAMP Kamloops has amazing choices when it comes to engaging in healthy activities, and our mountain biking community is one that embraces all ages and skill levels. We see our trails as the perfect opportunity to create a community of support and mentorship for our youth at-risk, and we have developed an event that will do just that. Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp for male youth aged 15 to 25 will be held on September 9-10, 2015 at Juniper Bike Ranch. Attendees are youth-at-risk from the Kamloops community and area. The young men who participate in Ashes to Dust have been impacted by substance use, and they do not typically have access to organized sports and often experience many other barriers in their lives. Many of them are unable to incorporate regular physical activity into their lives for a multitude of reasons. Lack of resources, lack of healthy role models at home, inability to motivate due to troubled home life, alcohol and drug use are just some of the challenges these young men face daily. During Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp, professional mountain bike riders and instructors will volunteer their time to support up to 25 youth from The least enjoyable part of Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp was the ending and having to stop and get in a vehicle to go home - Roger Camp Participant Kamloops and area. These two days will include food, transportation, bike shuttling, new bikes, and riding gear. Youth will be mentored every step of the way learning new skills, connecting with new people, and most importantly, learning about themselves - greatly improving their chance for success! All participants will be connected to mentors within the mountain bike community on an ongoing basis; offering them the opportunity to stay with the sport in the company of other mountain bike enthusiasts. By learning not only valuable mountain biking skills, but also interpersonal and leadership skills, our youth leave the camp feeling more confident, and empowered with a physical activity that requires little expenditure and an alternative to substance use and poor lifestyle choices.
