Kathy Gibson Kathy@tulsafsc.com Webmaster Kevin A. Slane webmaster@tulsafsc.com Inside Edge Editor Judy Banner Judy@tulsafsc.com Positive Feedback: veni, vidi, vici (we came, we saw, we conquered) The State Games of America in Colorado Springs in August served as a great sounding board for the Tulsa Figure Skating Club. Our Tulsa competitors came away with 66 medals. Our skaters and their families and friends had a great time in the Rocky Mountain city. Our volunteers were extraordinaire in their giving of time and service and expertise. And, the leadership of the USFS Committee and the officials from our club did meritorious service. If there was any lingering doubt that Tulsa was in town, the party in front of the hotel the evening before the competition swept that notion aside. Over one hundred people showed up to share the experience and even paint a number of vehicles. We came, we participated and we won an all around success. One of the great joys of representing the Tulsa Figure Skating Club at competitions and within the USFS is knowing that this club is not a few people working hard but rather many members doing their best to make a memory. The club has a vibrancy that other clubs are recognizing and admiring. To add to the good news, Oklahoma Sooner State Games officials selected TFSC as the host club for 2008. Over the years, the event hosting alternated between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, but the last performance was so positive that the officials designated Tulsa to repeat as the host. Our Chair, Jennifer DeAngelis, has already met with the Convention Center management and John Bolton, who is the General Manager of SMG and the manager of both the new Arena and the Convention Center. With the election of Board members on the 22 nd of September, the club will have a full strength management team and be off and running for the new Skating Year. Regional s are just around the corner and don t forget We will have two teams going to Junior Nationals in Salt Lake City at Thanksgiving time. TFSC is on a roll now let s keep it going! John Martens President, TFSC Qualifying Competitions Tulsa FSC will be well represented this year at the Southwest Regional Championships to be held October 14-20 in Grapevine Texas. The regional competition is the first step toward qualifying for Sectional and National Championships. The United States is divided into three sections with each section holding three separate regional competitions. Skaters participate in the region where their home club is located. In our case, the Southwestern Regional Championships. The top 4 singles skaters in Novice, Junior, & Senior levels will qualify to participate in the Midwest Sectional Championships to be held November 14-17 in Rochester Hills, Michigan. At the sectional level the top 4 Novice, Junior, & Senior skaters from each of the 3 U.S. Sectional Championships will then be eligible to compete in the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota January 20-27, 2008 Juvenile and intermediate singles skaters who finish in the top 4 at their Regional Championships advance on to the U.S. Junior National Championships hosted by the Salt Lake City Figure Skating Club November 26th December 1, 2007 Pairs and Ice dancing will not be held this year at the regional level. The dance teams of Alexandria Sipes & Stephen Brower and Brittany Schmucker & Charles Meadows coached by Kim Borgos will represent Tulsa at the 2007 U.S. Junior National championships in Salt Lake City!. Club Exhibition of Regional & Junior National Competitors 10:15 a.m. October 6, 2007 at Oilers Ice Center Come out and support your fellow club members and preview their programs for Southwest Regional Championships and Junior National Championships. Tulsa Figure Skating Club Welcomes New and Renewing Sponsors Prospective sponsors can choose to participate with us at a Gold, Silver, or Bronze level with annual funds of $1000, $500, or $250 respectively. The main benefit to the sponsor is in the form of advertising and name recognition. Twenty percent of the sponsor money solicited by a skater is deposited into that skater s individual account and managed by the club treasurer. That money can be used by the skater to help defray personal skating costs such as coaching fees, ice time, equipment costs, competition fees, etc It is a great program that benefits everyone, the club, the skater, and the sponsor. The Tulsa Figure Skating Club wishes to recognize Corporate Development Company at the Gold Sponsorship level. Company President, John Martens, has provided significant club strategic planning services and together with Mary Anne McGivern has supplied funding to cover various club expenses over the years. Among other things, they most recently purchased State Games of America t-shirts for all Oklahoma skaters to wear at the State Gamers of America opening ceremonies! We appreciate all that you do for our club! We welcome New Bronze sponsors, Summit Financial Group and Parker & Associates Realty, both secured by. See photo s below. Tulsa Figure Skating Club thanks renewing sponsors, Mark D. Welty/State Farm Insurance and Conrad C. Casler, D.D.S., both renewals secured by the DeAngelis family. Support of our sponsors is very much appreciated and is vital to the continued growth of this club and the sport of figure skating in Tulsa. The added monies from sponsorships help support club operating expenses and assist in the funding of club benefits such as the extra 30 minutes of club ice per week that we have been so fortunate to offer club members this year. Because we have not been able to hold our major fundraiser, Skate Tulsa, for the past couple of years, we have had to rely heavily on other sources of fundraising to fill the gap. The sponsor program has emerged as a fantastic source for these most needed funds. The Wood and DeAngelis families have become champions of the program inviting the participation of the majority of our club sponsors. If two families can make such an impact with this program think of what we could do with more member involvement! We need you, our members to get out there and market our program to potential sponsors. Please stop by the fundraising and sponsorship table at our annual fall round-up & harvest party during club ice on October 27th to hear more about this program. Fundraising and sponsor chair, Judy Banner will be on hand to answer questions and supply you with sponsor packets. The Wood and DeAngelis families are also happy to provide guidance on accruing sponsors. See page 9 for a compete listing of current club sponsors. with Robin Gentzen Parker of Parker & Associates with Todd Rolland of Summit Financial Group

Senior moves in the field is the highest of eight moves tests offered by USFS. Jillian is currently a student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and is active in the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She continues her love of skating at the Blazers Ice Arena in Oklahoma City where she receives instruction from Boyko Alexiev and she is coaching in the Learn to Skate program at Blazers. Mary Anne McGivern recently received a USFS appointment as a Sectional Competition Dance Judge. Mary Anne is a board member and current Vice President of the Tulsa Figure Skating Club. In addition to her service to our club, Mary Anne serves as a judge and chief referee at competitions around the country and is active in USFS at the National level. The Inside Edge Page 7 September/October 2007 Mark DeAngelis Membership Chair Membership Update Committee News Membership in the Club continues to grow as we move into our Competition and Club Ice Season. As most of you know we have changed our club ice policies for this season by extending the session from 60 to 90 minutes each Saturday. The Club Ice time is split up into three sessions of 30 minutes each. Session one is our Low Session (PreJuv and below). Session two is our Mixed Session (Everyone Skates). Session three is our High Level Session (Juv and above). Members can still only skate for 60 minutes total during 2 consecutive sessions but the split caused less overcrowding and has created a Safer, more enjoyable experience for our Skaters. As with any new program we are watching to see how it works out. The Board has decided to make the split at the Pre-Juv and Juv levels for now. We will evaluate how attendance is at each level and reserve the right to adjust the sessions to better accommodate all of our Members. Please help me properly track this by circling the LOW or HIGH next to your name when you sign in. The Club Ice rules are posted on the Club Board at the rink. Here are a few things to be aware of. Adults and older teens will be asked to Skate on the High Level. We may make exceptions for any skater we feel should be in a different level for the safety of our all of our Skaters. Please feel free to inquire at the Check in desk if you feel you may fit into this category. Your Free Skate Test Level determines which session you skate. Pairs Dance will be done on the High Session. New: All Adult guests, either from a member or a Coach, who wish to skate during our Club Ice session, need to check in with the Person at the sign in desk before entering the ice. They will be given a few rules about interacting with the children while on the ice. If you like how Club Ice is going please talk to those you know who skate and are not in the Club. Some may think that since they are in Basic Skills there is no reason to join the Club. That is just not the case. Signing up now as a Basic Skills Skater can be a great financial benefit. One hour a week free Ice time multiplied by about 40 weeks is well worth the fee to join the Club. Fundraising to offset their own personal skating cost helps the Club and the Skater. The Social aspect of the Club is a great way to make friends and make a Skater feel a part of something great. Spread the Word, Tulsa Figure Skating Club is worth being a part of! Finally, I would like to answer a question that I get asked frequently. What is a Basic Skater and when do I upgrade to a Full Membership? A Basic Skater is any skater that has not taken a USFS Test. Once a Skater is ready to take a USFS test the Skater must upgrade to a full Membership. (i.e.: PrePreliminary Free Skate, Moves in the Field or any Dance test taken during any Club Test Sessions. This does not include the Basic Skill School Test that you take during the Saturday morning or Thursday evening Learn to Skate Programs). Please make sure that you upgrade to a Full Membership when you plan to take a USFS test. In reviewing the Membership Applications I have noticed that there are some skaters that may have signed up as a Basic Skills Skater when they should have been a Full Member. If, you are one of these Skaters, I will be contacting you if I haven't already done so. The upgrade cost is $70.00. Once notified an upgrade is required, suspension of Club Benefits could occur if the upgrade is not handled in a timely manner (30 days from notification will be the max time allowed). The Inside Edge Page 9 September/October 2007 Gold Sponsor Silver Sponsors Bronze Sponsors Editorial note Please email any pictures or newsletter content to Judy Banner at Judy@tulsafsc.com for consideration for the next newsletter. Deadline for submission is November 1st. Photos from competitions are especially nice. They don t have to be action shots. They can be anything showing our skaters, parents and club members at any club activity. I especially need photos from the basic skills level. Kevin Slane supplies me with the majority of the photos that I use. Thank You Kevin! Without your help this newsletter would not be what it is. Kevin takes pictures on a purely voluntary basis but he can t be everywhere so please send in your pictures! Mark Your Calendars Help Wanted Looking for a responsible person(s) who would be willing to help solicit and organize information for the newsletter. The newsletter has received many compliments over the past several months and I appreciate them but this is really too big a job for one person alone. I am looking for committee members who can help in gathering some of the information and photos and checking things for accuracy. It would not take a lot of time and any help would be greatly appreciated. Contact Judy Banner at judy@tulsafsc.com for further information.
