Idaho Chapter #49 St Maries, Idaho Relay for Life participation Submitted by Joan Heisch WM and Grand Conductress - Idaho Idaho Chapter #49, St Maries Idaho participated in the local Relay for Life event on Saturday, July 30. The community of St Maries, Idaho (population 2,350) raised over $43,000 for the American Cancer Society. Our chapter sold chances to win a wishing well planter box made by PGP Bert Johnson, luminary bags for cancer survivors, memorial luminaries for cancer victims, and we sold ice cream to the walkers. We raised $394 (and a blister or 2) for our efforts! Relay for Life necklace 1 bead per lap Idaho Chapter s team, The All Stars, had a total of 11 participants throughout the day, but we all took turns walking. We always had at least one of our members on the ¼ mile track during the 12 hour event. We walked a total of 72 miles! From Ellen Hinton, Chapter Secretary, who was sure she could only walk 1/8 mile (she walked over 1 mile) to those of us who were determined not to be bested by AGM Liz Hughes (11 miles), it was an amazing time. Think your membership can t walk that far? Think again! The Kiwanis of St Maries asked local Boy Scouts to walk on behalf of the Kiwanis members who were unable to walk in the Relay. The volunteers from the Scouts each wore a lanyard with a Kiwanis member s picture as they walked... thus completing a lap for that Kiwanis member. If you are unable to walk...ask for a volunteer.. but be there and cheer for the participants!!! planter box made by PGP Bert Johnson Liz Hughes, AGM walking for Relay for Life Other than the walking, this is an effortless event in which to participate. Choose a format to raise money.. Dollars/mile, raffle item, food sales...you name it! I would encourage all Chapters to participate in such an event! We spent 12 hours in our community promoting Eastern Star and had fun doing it! Pictured le to right Bert Johnson, PGP; Ellen Hinton, Secretary; Sue Snodderley, AM; John Hughes AGP; Lonny Pugh AP
