The competition is put on by BEST Robotics Inc. who hold the competition in hopes of inspiring students to pursue careers in fields involving engineering, science, and technology. BEST stands for Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology. Each year the competition has a different theme. This year s theme is Bet the Farm, which involves using robots in agriculture. The teams have to design and build a robot to plant corn seeds (gold balls) and harvest corn (paint rollers). Teams can also rescue wayward pigs and harvest hydroponic tomatoes and lettuce. In addition to constructing a robot the teams also have to market their robot through a team exhibit and marketing presentation. Teams are also scored on their project engineering notebook which shows how the team used the engineering design process throughout the competition. Six weeks after first seeing the game field and receiving the robot kits Killdeer competed against 16 teams from across North Dakota and Minnesota at the Bison BEST hub. Killdeer placed 5 th among the 16 teams, earning an invitation to the Northern Plains Regional competition December 1 st through 3 rd. The Northern Plains Regionals will have 36 teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Canada. In addition to advancing to the Northern Plains Regional, one of four regional tournaments held in the United States, Killdeer won the first place Team Mascot award for having the mascot that generated the most spirit and cheer. The students took great pride in their performance and will be working hard over the next month to improve in all areas of the competition for the national regional tournament. Dr. Jeff West, High Science Instructor Elementary Music Program Schedule: November 30th - Grade 1 Program - 2:15 PM - Wrestling Room December 8th - Grade 2 Program - 2:15 PM - Wrestling Room December 15th - Grade 3/Kids Choir Performance - 2:00 PM - Wrestling Room

From the Desk of Mrs. Dietz Page 2 As we approach the flu season, and to help prevent the spread of the flu, please remember to keep your child home if they are not feeling well or have a fever. If they have been home ill, it is recommended that they not come to school until they have had no fever for 24 hours without medication. Please remind your children to dress appropriately for the weather. The temperature fluctuates daily so they should be prepared with warm gear as we do go out every day that we are able to. We do not go out once the temperature is 10 degrees below zero. Students MUST be dressed warmly to ride the bus in case of a breakdown of the vehicle. Bus drivers have the right to refuse service to a student who is not dressed properly or prepared for that emergency. Students should not be sharing headwear with other students to protect them from the possible spread of head lice. Please check your child occasionally to make sure they are not carrying this nuisance to school. There will be NO SCHOOL on November 11th, 24th or 25th. You can look for the Elementary midterm reports to come to your home around November 16th. From the Desk of Mr. Kleeman Happy November! Carol Dietz, Elementary Principal Quarter one is over, fall sport programs are coming to an end, and the days are getting shorter. Thank you to all for the support of our fall activities including: cross country, volleyball, football and robotics. Nice work to all the coaches and athletes. There is no school November 11th for Veteran s Day and November 24th-25th for Thanksgiving. The first day of wrestling will be November 7 th, the first day of basketball for girls is on the 14 th and boys basketball begins on the 28 th. Please see Mr. Schlosser, Mr. Kerr, Ms. Viveros, or Mr. Murphy with any questions. A quick reminder about absentee policies. All students are required to take a semester/final test for each of their courses. There is an Attendance Incentive Policy that states any student who misses two or less periods for a class will not have to take a test for that course. The only excused days for the incentive are school related activities or bereavement. There are more specific guidelines spelled out for students in the student handbook that can be requested from the main office or Mr. Kleeman. Also, any student receiving more than 10 absences in a class will lose credit in that class. Missed class periods can be made up after school. A class make-up sheet can be obtainedfrom Mr. Kleeman. Thank you for all that you do! Killdeer High Drama Presents Dinner Theater November 14th 6:30 PM Tickets On Sale Oct24th Nov 4th *Limited tickets for sale at the door! Elementary Student Council News Page 3 The Elementary Student Council is off to a fast start this fall. We started out with our Spirit Store at the beginning of the year. Thank you to all who bought orange and black items to support our sports teams. Next, we did a popcorn fundraiser for a local family whose child is dealing with some medical issues. Thanks to all who bought popcorn. We collected over $200.00 to help this family. Our Pink Day proceeds were great also. The High Student Council and the Elementary Student Council will discuss who or what organization could benefit from the money raised. In November we will be working on collecting items for our local food pantry. I will be sending home a list of items that the pantry is in need of. In the past we have collected over 1,000 items to help our community. We hope we can count on your continued support in this effort. November 4th will be Hat Day for $1.00 in the elementary. Denice Sayler, Elementary Student Council Advisor From the Superintendent Winter Weather and Winter Travel A Second Reminder *Parents/guardians need to make sure emergency home/storm home information and contact numbers are updated. Please contact Jess or Kerry at the office with your up dated information. 701-764-5877 *During the winter season, all parents are urged to see that their children are properly dressed when they board the school bus. There is always the possibility that the bus could be stalled for a period of time, and in this event, warm coats, caps, gloves, and overshoes, could avert serious consequences. *Extracurricular participants need to have proper attire when traveling on the bus. *Let s be safe! Gary A. Wilz, Superintendent
