V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 Junior Umpires Nominations are being sought for players interested in trying their hand at Umpiring The JFUP (Junior Field Umpiring Programme) operates at Wilston Grange. Those who nominate will officiate at Under 8 to 10 Games at Wilston Grange. You will also be required to attend a minimum of two Training Sessions with the AFLBJ during the early part of the season. Opportunities also exist later in the season to join the League Umpires for some training to become a Boundary Umpire during the Youth Finals Series. Any players in Under 13 s to Under 16 s who may be interested please contact Jo Jardine on 3166 8379 or at wgjafc@optusnet.com.au for more information. First Aid Before any game commences for Junior AFL, a qualified First Aid Official must be in attendance. These First Aid Officials must be registered with AFLBJ. Wilston Grange provides training for parents to become First Aid Officials to ensure that every team has a qualified First Aider for home games. (Under 6 to Under 11). We use Qualified Sports Trainers for All Youth Games. First Aid Training is currently booked for 16th March, 2013. Anyone who may be interested in participating please contact Jo on 3166 8379 or wgjafc@optusnet.com.au If you already have CURRENT First Aid or Higher Qualifications eg Applied First Aid Certificates, Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, etc and you are prepared to assist with game day First Aid, please also contact Jo we will need to register you with the league and get a league ID tag. Ground Maintenance Volunteers There is a role for everyone in the Club. No matter how big or small everyone is appreciated. Currently we have a very small group who assist with General Maintenance around the club. Duties include:- mowing the area in front of club (not the ovals), emptying all bins, cleaning change rooms, odd jobs around place. With two of the group retiring they are desperately in need of a hand. Our maintenance crew meet on a Wednesday for about 4 or 5 hours but any amount of time you could give would be fantastic. So if we have some non-working parents or even grandparents who could help out give us a call or send an email to Jo so you can be put in touch with the crew.

I wasn't born a world champion. I just worked really hard to become one." P A G E 5 Representative Possibilities. For our Youth Players there are a number of Representative opportunities coming up in the next few weeks. Keep your eyes posted. Some of these come through AFLQ and details can be obtained via the clubs others are through Education Queensland and it is through your school that information will be obtained. AFLQ Opportunities These fall under two regions and are dependant upon where you live. The majority of our club fall into the Northern Raiders Region however, quite a few of you who live over towards Everton Park, Mitchelton and out towards Ferny Grove you most likely live in the Western Taipan Region. Both regions offer similar programs and both communicate details with the club which we will pass onto you where appropriate. Northern Raiders Under 16 /Western Taipans Under 16 "Great men and great teams do great things at great moments. " JOHN BERTRAND Trials Carnivals for the Under 16 teams were due to be held over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd March but were washed out due to inclement weather. Northern Raiders Selection Games now to be held on Friday 8th March at Zillmere for those shortlisted in squad. Check out Northern Raiders Website. Western Taipans Selection Trials at Training Session 13th March at Yeronga. The Under 16 State Academy Trials (formerly known as the AFLQ State Under 16 Championships) will be held at Yeronga on Sunday April 28, Saturday May 4 and Monday May 6. Northern Raiders Under 14 This program is open to boys turning 13 and 14 in 2013. Players will be assessed for squad selection in the first few fixture rounds of the AFL Brisbane Juniors season, in addition on April 13 2013 at Zillmere we will conduct the Northern Raiders u14 selection trial day to select an initial squad. Club coaches will be consulted in this process and selectors will watch games also to form opinions prior to coming up with an initial squad. Once an initial squad is formed in early to mid May, they will train and play intra squad matches to work towards selecting a final squad. Players outside the initial squad can be added at the discretion of the selection panel based on form, need or injury. The Under 14 State Academy Trials (formerly known as the AFLQ State Under 14 Championships) will be held on the Gold Coast (Broadbeach) and Northern NSW (Byron Bay) between June 24-28. Western Taipans Under 14 The Taipans are still to advise of their selection process for the Under 14 Squad. The Taipans Team will also play in the Under 14 State Academy Trials listed above.

V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 6 SCHOOLBOY TEAM Opportunities Selection in these squads takes place through a number of avenues. All information and paperwork to participate in these squads should be collected through your child s school. The clubs do not have access to this paperwork, nor are they involved in any of the selection process. Met North Secondary Schoolboys Team (Under 15) This program is open to boys turning 15 in 2013 and younger (but still in high school). The trial day will be held at Zillmere on Wednesday March 5 th. (Postponed till Tuesday 12th March) It is imperative that all players intending to trial have signed permission slips from their school. Generally players that turn up without signed permission from their school are turned away. My advice to those wanting to trial is to speak to their head of sport/pe teacher at school to get the form required. AFL Queensland will assist with the trial day however do not have a say in selection. The State Championships will be held on May 23-26 in either Toowoomba or Dalby (TBC) Met North Primary Schoolboys Team (Under 12) This program is open to boys turning 12 in 2013 and younger (but still in primary school). The first process for players is to trial for their school District team. Information around this should be sought directly from schools through either the PE teachers or school administration as they will have dates, times and venues for these days as they do vary between the districts. Ensure that you consult with your school to collect permission slips that are required to attend district trials. If players make the school district team that will then compete in the Met North Regional Trials. These trials are held over two days at Zillmere on Wednesday and Thursday 17-18 April. AFL Queensland will assist with the Regional trial days however do not have a say in selection. The State Championships will be held on June 8-12 at Fishermans Road (Maroochydore).

Would you believe that early Australian Football uniforms consisted of canvas lace-up guernseys, long trousers, socks and high leather boots? Imagine! It is your responsibility to check your emails regularly.
