FEBRUARY 2019 CHAPTER #257 EDITION 2019-02 Sponsored by Mitchell s Harley-Davidson Owners: Art & Linda Mitchell / www.mitchellsmodestohd.com By Joe Rosa, Director Hope everyone is having a great start to the New Year. The rain has hit us pretty hard, so stay dry out there and if you have to ride in the rain make sure that your tires are in good shape. It s also been very cold on some of our rides, so please dress appropriately and don t forget your heated gear. A little rain didn t stop a few of us from going on the last Polar Bear run from Jamestown Harley. The turnout was tremendous. Thank you Jamestown Harley and Jamestown HOG.you guys did a great job! If you haven t signed up for our Valentines Sweetheart Ride on Feb. 9 th you can purchase you tickets at the shop on February 6th. You can also contact Cindy at 209-678-5661 or Liz at 209-606-0466 and she will sign you up. The Ride this year will end up at Wool Growers in Los Banos for lunch. Our HOG Appreciation Night is on February 6th at Mitchells Harley. We will not have our regular meeting at the Elks. Come on down to Mitchells instead. John will have some great discounts and food. This is also our membership sign up day. You will be able to pay your dues at the door. Keep in mind that this is for HOG Members only, so if you haven t paid your dues yet this is your chance. Anyone who would like to join HOG is welcome to come on down and sign up as well. I had the pleasure of attending the Jamestown Hog general meeting in January. We will be inviting them to participate in many of our rides and they in turn offer the same to us. As of January we are both sponsored by Mitchells, so if you have a chance to visit with any of the Jamestown members please make them feel welcomed. We are all in this together!
By Gary Hopper, Senior Road Captain We started off January with cold and wet weather, but that didn t stop the Hogs from turning out for the last Jamestown Polar Bear Run. The Chapter had about a dozen riders that braved the elements; great event, great memories. We squeezed in 4 rides and Mitchell s Pancake Breakfast & Swap Meet, (not bad for the middle of winter). Great news, the Occidental Overnighter is on! Saturday and Sunday, April 6th & 7th, make your reservations at: Best Western Garden Inn at 707-546-4031; one-night April 6th for $179.99 make sure you get the Modesto Hog blocked rooms. SAFETY ON THE ROAD By Teaters, Safety Officer POINTS TO PONDER Intersections -- We ride many county roads where there are 4-way stops. These intersections can be dangerous if riders are not alert. What happens, you look right and the driver at the stop sign waves you through. But have you checked to see if the driver on your left also waves you through? You may think you have a clear intersection when actually one or the other driver is sure it is his turn to go. BE SURE TO CHECK BOTH WAYS before proceeding. When you are waved through give the thank you wave. Stop Lights -- Not so much of a hazard but they can cause the group to be separated. What to do: Tighten up the stagger so 2 bikes can go through the light together. If there are 2 lanes, the second half of the group should go into the 2nd lane -that makes it easier to get everyone through together. If you get caught at a light, don't worry. The Road Captain will know this and either adjust the group's speed or find a safe stopping point to wait. You won't get left behind. Friends that want to ride -- They are always welcome, but there are several things they need to know before joining the group, especially if they haven't ridden in a group before. Hopefully you will have ridden with them before so you will know their skill level and can advise on the rides that will be appropriate for them. Ask a Road Captain for the "Group Riding" sheet that gives info and pointers on riding with a group. Be a Mentor -- All of us were at one time "new/beginner" riders. You can help these new riders by passing along information such as: How and where to brake in a corner, how to set up the apex of the corner, drop your shoulder, lean and look through the corner and then plan for the next curve. HOG is -- A place to find friends to ride with that have your same interests, riding styles and skill levels. With the support of our sponsor, Modesto Harley, the HOG Board and HOG Senior Road Captain we have the opportunity to be part of some great rides for all riding levels. Pick your ride and enjoy the open roads. KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP! SEE YOU ON THE ROAD!
