We also encourage you to re-share the messages being shared on the Nebraska 4H Facebook and Twitter social media networks. Wear your 4-H shirt. Give a clover sticker to everyone you find smiling or just being nice. Swap Clover-tines, like Valentines! Make you own cards with funny 4-H sayings. Replace your voice mail with Happy 4-H Month Distribute something 4-H'y for bulletin boards in every classroom. Ask your church to acknowledge 4-H Sunday (and all the 4-H members who are present. Present the minister (pastor, priest, rabbi, etc.) with a 4-H gift of appreciation. Honor an adult volunteer, teen leader or donor with a card. Gosper County Carnival The Gosper County 4-H Carnival will be Monday, March 19th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Elwood Civic Center. Please RSVP, 995-4222.RSVP by Friday Youth Livestock Quality Assurance Required for all 4-H ers that will be exhibiting Beef, Sheep, Goats, Hogs, Rabbits, Dairy, and Poultry at the county fair, state fair, or AkSarBen. In 2018, you may fulfill this requirement through an online class OR in-person class using the new national curriculum. Gosper County 4-H Scholarship High school seniors, be sure to apply for the Gosper County 4-H Council scholarships. Four scholarships, $500 each, are available to graduating seniors who are, or have been members of Gosper County 4-H. When filling out the application, use care and be sure to put your best effort forward as you highlight your 4-H and other accomplishments. Applications are available at your guidance counselor s office, on our web site at https:// extension.unl.edu/statewide/phelps-gosper/ and at the Extension Office. Applications are due in our office by April 1, 2018. Livestock Growers Scholarship The Phelps-Gosper Livestock Growers group has established one (1) - $1000 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a young man or woman in the process of furthering their education. This scholarship will be good at any university, college, or technical school. To be eligible the immediate family member: a) of a member of the Phelps-Gosper Livestock Grower s Association (Nebraska Cattlemen), or b) of an employee working for a P-G Livestock Growers member firm. The application is available at the Phelps and Gosper Extension Offices, your guidance counselor s office or at: http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/phelps-gosper/phelpsgosper-scholarships/ Application is due April 1, 2018 NACEB Scholarship The Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards (NACEB) Scholarship Program includes the following: One $1000 scholarship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) or in the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) for an incoming student (freshmen or transfer student). One $1000 scholarship for a current student (sophomore or higher) enrolled in CASNR or CEHS. Note: NACEB may suspend this scholarship program at any time. REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS It is expected that each scholarship recipient make at least one presentation to a community, high school, or 4-H group discussing the importance of continuing one s education at the post-secondary level, the positive experiences and benefits of studying in CASNR/CEHS and encouraging others to study in CASNR/ CEHS. Shooting Sports Notes Gosper County 4-H BB Gun Contest The Gosper County BB Gun Contest will be March 3rd at the Civic Center in Elwood. 4-H Shotgun held in Holdrege 4-H Shotgun is open to anyone 4-H age 12 years and older or anyone 10 years and older who has done two years of BB Gun. Shotgun will start on March 26 and run through April 30. Practices will be Monday evenings at the Holdrege Gun Club on the west end of Holdrege. If you are interested, please come to the office and sign up for shotgun anytime between now and March 26. In order to compete in the final contest, the last day to register is April 16. There is a $20 fee for shotgun and youth and parents must sign a release wavier. 4-H ers MUST be enrolled in 4-H in ne.4honline.com 4-H Club of the Month The Nebraska 4-H Foundation provide the 4-H Club of the Month program to all Nebraska 4-H clubs throughout the state. Clubs can nominate themselves by telling why their club should be chosen as Club of the Month. A different club will be chosen each month and will be awarded with a certificate and $50 cash card. Check out our website, phelps-gosper.unl.edu, for instructions and a link to enroll in 4-H. Or you can go directly to ne.4honline.com. This is for re-enrollment of youth and adult volunteers and new members! NEW in 2018 Deadline for Phelps /Gosper is JUNE 10, 2018 Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards The purpose of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation's Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA,) is to recognize 4-H clubs for the work of the individuals in the club and the community service work of the entire club. This is an opportunity for 4-H to support our agricultural roots while we help 4-H members expand the career possibilities they are considering. Recognition is in the form of $500 checks issued to the club's treasury to be used as described in the award application form completed by the club. Applications for the 2017 Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards are due by March 3, 2017 and clubs will be notified by May 15, 2017. Phelps/Gosper 4-H Speech Contest April 12, 2017 5:30 p.m. Phelps County Ag Center-Holdrege Clover kids, ages 5-7, will recite a short speech or story. Novice, ages 8-9, speeches are to be a recitation of a favorite poem or story written by someone other than the 4-H er. It should be 3 minutes or less. Junior Division, ages, 8,9,10, will give 4-H related, personally written speech, 1-3 minutes long. A 4-H member may be either a Novice or a junior, but not both. Intermediate Division, ages11-13, will give 4-H related, personally written speech, 3-5 minutes long. Senior Division, ages 14 and older, will give a 4-H related, personally written speech, 5-8 minutes long. All contestants must be present the day of the contest. A Public Service Announcement (PSA) All PSA's are 60 seconds in length. The state theme for the 2018 Public Service Announcement (PSA) is "4-H Grows True Leaders". All radio PSA's must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used anywhere in Nebraska at any time of the year. All 4-H PSA's must include the following tag line within the last 10 seconds of the PSA: "Learn more about the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu." The tag line is included in the 60 second time limit. Registration Due April 11 Call your local Extension Office to register 4-H FRIDAY 4-H Gardening--Soils and Seeds Workshop Join us on Friday, February 23 rd as we explore the marvelous properties of soils and start seeds for transplant into a summer garden! (Richard Waller s Feedlot) 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM Only MARKET BEEF and 2 nd Year Bucket Calves Lottery Hog and Lottery Lamb If you want to try the 4-H Hog or Lamb project this is the place to start! All the animals are from the same quality producer and are approximately the same weight. One animal of each specie per 4-H youth, and our county fair has a special class just for you. Register at the office by March 23, 2018. Selection for Phelps and Gosper youth will be: April 21st in Elwood for Hogs 4-H Horse Stampede and Companion Animal Challenge The 4-H Horse Stampede and Companion Animal Challenge are held annually on the University of Nebraska Lincoln East Campus. This year's events will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018. This event offers a variety of 4-H contests that don't require live animals, including Skillathon, Quiz Bowl, art and more. Join as a team or individual. Entry & Order Forms - forms and fees due to local Extension offices by February 9, 2018 https://4h.unl.edu/horse/stampede https://4h.unl.edu/companion-animal/challenge NE Youth Pork Conference Makin Bacon and a WHOLE Lot More! will be conducted Wednesday, May 30, - Friday, June 1, 2017. Youth will grade pork carcasses, fabricate carcasses into wholesale and retail cuts, exercise basic culinary methods on various pork products, explore value enhancement, processed meats, and food safety. Become more informed on pork production technology, industry issues, and how to advocate for the industry! Potential youth participants apply online at http:// www.nepork.org/makin-bacon-whole-lot/ for this NO COST conference! Applications are due Friday, April 13, 2018. The 4-H Companion Animal program offers resources and educational programs to youth interested in learning more about caring for companion animals. Questions? There are currently more than 1.1 billion companion animals worldwide. In fact, there are more companion animals than people in the United States. 2018 Animal Identification As you begin your plans for the 2018 4-H season, make yourself familiar with the following identification requirements for county, State Fair and AkSarBen participation. The regulations have been changed for State Fair and AkSarBen in 2018. As we get more information on these changes, we will continue to update all of you. All animals (except poultry and county only rabbits ) require a hardcopy paper ID turned into the Extension Office by the 2018 deadlines. All 4-H Market Livestock being considered for State Fair or AkSarBen must be identified on the paper ID form. (This is for our county records.) All 4-H Market Beef and Market Hogs being considered for State Fair or AkSarBen must have DNA pulled and an EID tag in its ear. The EID tag number will be entered into a web site by the 4-H family this year for state fair. Extension staff will mail in the DNA envelopes. All 4-H Breeding Livestock being considered for State Fair or AkSarBen must have a tattoo and that information entered into the web based system by the 4-H family. All sheep and goats, market or breeding, will use their scrapie tag for county fair, state fair and AkSarBen. All Market sheep and goats considered for State Fair and AkSarBen must have DNA pulled. The scrapie tag must be entered into the web based system by the family. Extension staff will mail in the DNA. DNA envelopes are returned to the Extension Office and Extension staff will submit DNA envelopes for market livestock. Supply your Premise ID to Extension Office. (County, State and AkSarBen) Supply your Youth Quality Assurance number to the Extension Office. (County, State and AkSarBen) MARKET BEEF and 2 nd Year Buckets Calves need to be weighed in by April 15th Breeding heifers do NOT need 4-H tags Pick up all ID sheets at the office. Different species have different ID sheets. First Year Bucket Calves and Clover Kid Bucket Calves have their own tag and ID material,. Horse Identification A required hardcopy paper ID with identifying photos/ drawings and owner affidavit. NEW for 2018 Sheep and Goats 4-H Market Sheep and 4-H Market Goats will no longer require an 982 EID tag. The scrapie tag will be used for identification of breeding and market sheep and goats in 2018. The scrapie tag comes from the producer of the animal. Coming in 2018 Nebraska State Fair and AkSarBen participants will submit their animal identification directly into the State Fair/ AkSarBen database. The Extension office will continue to mail in the DNA envelopes. The cost of each envelope is $6 and will be paid directly from the family, online via the State Fair/AkSarBen database. All Market Beef information and payment is due in the database by April 15, 2018. All Breeding Beef, Market Swine, Market and Breeding Sheep, and Market and Breeding Goats information and payment due in the database by June 15, 2018.
