Right-hander Tom Koehler is starting for Miami, and will be making his fifth Interleague start of the season and first career start against the Tigers. Detroit counters with left-hander Jose Alvarez, who is making just his sixth career start, first Interleague start and 14 th career appearance (all in 2013). Miami entered its season-ending homestand fresh off its final road trip of the season (3-8), a stretch of 11 games in 10 days that saw the Club visit the Mets (1-3), the Phillies (1-2) and the Nationals (1-3), and split doubleheaders in New York and Washington. Looking ahead to Opening Day 2014, Miami will take on the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park on Monday, March 31. WEDNESDAY NIGHT Miami closed out its season series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 3-2 win. The Marlins struck first, scoring two runs on a second-inning triple by Adeiny Hechavarria. After the Phillies tied the game in the seventh, Hechavarria struck again, driving in the game-winning run in the eighth. Miami recorded just six hits in the game, and half came off the bat of Placido Polanco, who went 3x4 with one run scored and a double. Brad Hand started for the Fish, limiting the Phillies to two runs on seven hits while walking just one and striking out three over 6.1 innings. Chad Qualls (5-2) earned the win in relief, and Steve Cishek tallied his 33 rd save. Steve Cishek on Wednesday established a new Club record for consecutive saves, nailing down his 28 th straight opportunity. He moved past the previous record holder, Todd Jones, who saved 27 straight games in 2005. Additionally, it is the longest active streak in the Majors, ahead of Huston Street (25). His ERA since his save streak began on June 8 is 1.24, which ranks fifth among NL relievers (min. 35.0 IP), behind Kevin Siegrist (0.50), Craig Kimbrel (0.86), Tony Watson (1.07) and Luis Avilan (1.13). Cishek is the third closer this season to record a consecutive save streak of 28-games-or-longer, following Craig Kimbrel s 37-game streak from May 9-September 14 and Greg Holland s 31-game stretch from May 30-September 3. The three streaks of 28+ consecutive saves is equal to that of the previous two seasons combined, when Joe Nathan had 31 in 2012 and Jose Valverde and John Axford had 49 and 43, respectively, in 2011. - STATS LLC ELIAS SAYS... THIS DATE IN MARLINS HISTORY September 27 Hanley Ramirez hit his seventh leadoff home run of the 2006 season, tying Nomar Garciaparra (1997, BOS) for the MLB record for leadoff HRs by a rookie. He established the NL rookie record with his sixth leadoff HR on September 24 at Philly, passing Chili Davis (1982, SF) and Kaz Matsui (2004, NYM). Ramirez owns the Marlins single-season (9 in 2008) and career marks (25) for leadoff HR. Overall record on this date: 11-9 Adeiny Hechavarria drove in all of the runs for the Marlins in their 3-2 win over the Phillies on Wednesday night. He tripled home two runs in the second inning to give Miami a 2-0 lead, and after the Phillies tied the score at 2-2, it was his RBI on a fielder s choice grounder in the eighth inning that plated the decisive run for the Marlins. Hechavarria has registered 42 RBIs in the 145 games he s played for the Marlins this year and exactly half of them (21) have come in only six games. He s had one 7-RBI game (May 5 at Philadelphia), one 4-RBI game, two 3-RBI games and two 2-RBI games. THE GOLD STANDARD If the 2013 season is the last of Placido Polanco s 17-year career, he is making a strong case to go out with the gold. In 91 starts (108 games), Polanco leads all qualifying Major League third basemen with a.990 fielding percentage (2 E/205 TC). He previously took home Rawlings National League Gold Glove awards in 2011 (third base) and 2009 (second base), as well as an American League Gold Glove award in 2007 (second base). He is one of just two players in Major League history to earn the award at multiple positions (Darin Erstad). ROAD RECORD DOESN T TELL THE STORY Despite finishing the 2013 road slate with a 26-55 record, Miami pitchers established a Club record with 580 strikeouts, surpassing the previous best of 574 in 1997. The staff also posted the lowest opponents average and road ERA of any non strike-shortened season with marks of.251 and 3.87, respectively, while tossing the second-most innings (714.0) in any season, behind 736.2 in 2011. TEAM STATS Miami has a 6-11 record in Interleague Play this season, having won five of its last eight games following a sevengame slide. Last season, the Fish went just 5-13 against the AL. Despite going 26-42 in Interleague Play since 2010, Miami is tied with the Mets and Nationals with the second-most all-time Interleague wins (146) among National League teams, trailing Atlanta (148). The Marlins own the fourth-best winning percentage among NL teams at.509 (146-141), trailing Atlanta (.530; 148-131), St. Louis (.529; 135-120) and the Mets (.518; 146-136). The Fish lead all NL clubs in runs scored (1,331), RBI (1,260) and doubles (537), are tied with Washington for the lead in hits (2,553), and rank second in triples (57) and walks (895). The pitching staff leads all NL Clubs in complete games (tied with Arizona-18), ranks second in saves (74), has allowed the third-fewest home runs (254), ranks third in innings pitched (2561.1), fourth in strikeouts (1,905) and is sixth in ERA (4.26). MARLINS STARTING PITCHER 2013: 4-10, 4.45 CAREER: 4-11, 4.53 Height: 6-3 Weight: 233 TOM KOEHLER Bats: Right Throws: Right RHP Acquired: Selected in 18 th round of 2008 First-Year Player Draft Koehler gets the call in the opener of the final home series of the season, a three-game set against Detroit. He is coming off his fourth win of the year, a 6.0-inning, two-run outing in the first game of a doubleheader on September 22 at Washington. He held the Nationals to three hits (one home run) and one walk, with no strikeouts. In his prior start, he turned in his best outing of the season, tossing 8.0 shutout innings of three-hit ball on September 15 at Citi Field in a Marlins 1-0 loss to the Mets in 12 innings. He did not factor in the decision, allowing three hits and striking out five with no walks. The 8.0 innings pitched tied a career high (also, May 29, 2013 vs. Tampa Bay). He will make his first career appearance against Detroit. He is 0-2 with a 5.40 (23.1 IP/14 ER) in four career appearances, all starts this season, in Interleague Play. For the season, Koehler is 1-5 with a 5.15 ERA (50.2/29) in nine starts at Marlins Park. Since joining the rotation on May 12, he is 4-10, 4.56 ERA (126.1/64) in 22 starts. Koehler is holding opponents to a.248 (53x214) average in their first time through the lineup and.247 (45x182) during their second time. Meanwhile, the average climbs to.316 (37x117) in their third time through the lineup. He has pitched 6.0-plus innings in 10 of his starts this season, going 4-2 with a 2.12 ERA (68.0/16) and.209 (50x239) opponents batting average in those games. In his first 11 starts of the season, he issued just 17 walks in 64.2 innings pitched for a rate of 2.37 walks per 9.0 innings; over his last 11 starts, he has issued 28 walks in 61.2 innings pitched for a 4.09 BB/9 rate. Koehler opened the season with six appearances out of the bullpen. He went 0-0 with a 3.18 ERA (11.1/4) in those outings, with a.135 (5x37) opponents average.
