After the weekend, Mary Connolly and Morgan Maize both earned spots on the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Maize had a career day last Saturday, hitting 5-for-7 against Providence with a pair of homers, including her second grand slam of the season. Connolly connected on a three-run shot at Louisville and added a two-run blast versus Providence and leads the Blue Demons with eight jacks this season. Scouting The Irish Notre Dame has four straight wins despite a 3-3 record in ACC play. The Irish boast a powerful lineup with 10 players batting.300 or better on the season and a.339 mark as a team. In the circle, Notre Dame has a team ERA of 2.18 and is led by ace Laura Winter (14-3, 1.98). Emilee Koerner (.365, 7 HR, 30 R) is the primary power bat in a lineup full of strong hitters. The last time the two programs met was in the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Tournament semifinal, a 9-1 win for the Irish which ended the Blue Demons season. Scouting The Pirates The Pirates have won three-of-four entering the weekend, including a three-game sweep of BIG EAST rival Providence on March 22-23. Last weekend, the Pirates three-game set against Villanova was called off due to weather. Seton Hall hits.277 as a team, including a big power year so far from Meredith Henze (.330, 8 HR, 17 RBI), but has struggled in the circle with a team ERA of 6.43. Four different pitchers could potentially see work for the Pirates, but Jen Metzger leads the group (4-3, 4.65). The last time the two programs met was April 3, 2013 in Lincoln Park as DePaul swept a doubleheader by a combined score of 23-9. The Blue Demons have won eight straight in the series dating back to April 4, 2009. Award-Winning DePaul has claimed five of the first 14 BIG EAST Conference weekly awards during the season s first six weeks. This Monday, Morgan Maize and Mary Connolly made appearances on the Honor Roll. Two weeks ago, Ali Lenti made her first career appearance on the league s honor roll after hitting.444 (4-for-9) at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic. The week prior, junior Mary Connolly took home Player of the Week honors on March 3 as Verdun joined her on the honor roll. Nicole Pihl has also been honored as Player of the Week (2/24) with senior Hannah Penna joining her on the weekly honor roll. Verdun began her season by earning a BIG EAST weekly honor in each of the first two weeks. On Feb. 10, the senior lefty was honored as Pitcher of the Week and followed it up with a Player of the Week recognition on Feb. 17. Junior Mary Connolly was also named Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17, while classmate Staci Bonezek was an honor roll nominee on Feb. 10. Still Going Strong Head coach Eugene Lenti begins his 33rd season heading up the Blue Demon program in 2014, and the Hall of Famer has amassed an extraordinary career record of 1,190-578-6. He is the fifth winningest active coach in the nation and has led DePaul to the NCAA tournament in 15 of the last 17 years. That run includes four trips to the Women s College World Series. In three of the last six seasons, the Blue Demons have won either a BIG EAST regular-season title or BIG EAST Conference Championship tournament title. Lenti and his assistant coaches have also been honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year three times. Blue Demons Picked to Win BIG EAST Title DePaul softball is the 2014 BIG EAST Conference favorite, according to the conference s annual preseason poll announced on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Blue Demons, who will serve as host of the 2014 BIG EAST Championship in May, earned six first-place votes and tallied 48 total points. Conference coaches ranked the teams one through seven and were not allowed to vote for their own programs. BIG EAST newcomer Creighton received 44 points along with two first-place votes to finish just behind the Blue Demons. The Blue Demons have now been picked to win the conference twice in the past three seasons and six times total as the program enters its 10th season in the BIG EAST. DePaul has never been selected to finish any lower than fourth in a BIG EAST preseason poll. Verdun Looks to Make History in Senior Season One of the most decorated pitchers (and hitters) in school history, senior Kirsten Verdun enters 2014 inside the top-five of eight categories in the school s all-time record book. Simply repeating her career averages should allow her to come close to and/or break several school records over the course of the season. A dual threat, Verdun also begins the season fourth in school history in slugging percentage, home runs and walks.
