Waller weekly news 25 november 2016 This week we celebrated three winners and almost another Group One winner with Good Project s bid to defend his Railway Stakes title in Perth dashed by Scales of Justice. He still managed second however and stable-mate Mackintosh was fourth in the million-dollar event. At our hometrack of Rosehill on Saturday Religify and Multifacets both returned their owners to the winner s circle with deserved victories for these talented, consistent gallopers. Meanwhile at Newcastle a very special maiden win by Highleigh was celebrated by the stable and the Leonard family with their home-bred filly and half-sister to Danleigh winning over 1350m in determined fashion. Danleigh won 10 races in total including four at Group One level and was a cheeky character whose antics around the stable and on the track we fondly remember. A big congratulations this week also goes to former CWR trackwork rider Daniel Robinson. Now running his breaking in and pre-training business DPR Breaking full time, he took out the prestigious The Way of the Horse challenge at Equitana last week. Involving getting a virtually unhandled young horse, breaking it in and riding it through an obstacle course in just three days. Dan s skills and those of all the other farms who work with our horses are a big part of the stable s success and we re fortunate to have such a great pool of talented horsemen and women available to us. This weekend s racing kicks off with Canterbury tonight followed by Rosehill, Hawkesbury and Moonee Valley meetings tomorrow and Kembla and Traralgon on Sunday. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK religify 6yo G Choisir - Sacred Witness by El Moxie This consistent galloper made a well deserved return to the winners circle at Rosehill on Saturday over 1400m. Kerrin McEvoy was in the saddle and he gave the son of Choisir a great ride, bouncing him out in front from the barriers. The partnership were always travelling strongly at the head of affairs and Religify kept going strongly in the home straight for a dominant victory. He has been a great horse for connections with this being his eighth win, taking his earnings to over $450,000 in prize money. WATCH the race replay. multifacets 4yo G O Reilly - Swarovski by Pins The son of O Reilly was another one to return to the winners circle at Rosehill on Saturday when winning over 2000m. Tommy Berry took the mount and he produced a patient ride settling him just beyond midfield early on before bringing this talented four year old with a sustained challenge in the straight to win comfortably at the finish. Multifacets seemed to relish the step up in distance having been competing at shorter trips of late and has the makings of a nice stayer for his Karaka syndicate connections. WATCH the race replay. highleigh 3yo F So You Think - Graceful Lily by Dr Grace A half-sister to a very special horse to the stable in Danleigh, this daughter of So You Think built on the promise of a third placing at her previous start when breaking her maiden at Newcastle on Saturday over 1350m. Visiting Irish hoop Leigh Roche was on board and he produced a nice patient ride settling her towards the rear of the field early on before coming with a well timed run in the straight to score a narrow yet impressive success over stablemate Jaminzah. Being a daughter of So You Think (High Chapparal) Highleigh should continue to improve as she steps up in distance and looks a filly going places for long time stable clients, Keith and Ruth Leonard. WATCH the race replay. Thanks to Bradley Photographers and darryl sherer for our weekly photos. www.bradleyphotos.com.au

CWR STABLE INSIGHTS - GROWTH PLATE RADIOGRAPHS Owners of recently turned two-year-olds in the stable will have no doubt received an update from Chris in recent months mentioning the maturity of their youngster s knees and therefore their capability to be, or not to be, put under pressure at this stage. A simple x-ray is taken to measure this with stable vets Dr Tim Roberts and Ross Alexander kindly supplying the following information explaining the importance of this information in relation to the longevity of a horse s career. Radiographs of the distal radius growth plate DRGP (aka:distal radius physis) of yearlings gives an indication of the maturity of a young horses skeletal structure. It is important for the DRGP to have started to close before a young horse is put under intense pressure in training. Growth plate closure starts in the distal extremities and moves towards the upper limb. If the DRGP are closed then all growth plated below it have already closed. Growth plates are so named because this is where the growth in the long bones occurs increasing their length and as such the horses height. Generally young horses can do light work before DRGP closure but fast work is not advised until DRGP closure has commenced. This examination is important at it has a direct correlation to the future soundness throughout the rest of a horses career. It is further important to understand that it takes at least 90 days for a horse to move from one grading to the next and in some cases it takes in excess of 120 days. The least predictable period between grades is from the Grade C (No physeal closure evident) to Grade B - ( Closure starting). Whilst the date of birth of the individual yearling is important, size and scope also play a significant role. It is because of the unpredictability of closure and the inability to determine closure clinically that makes radiographic examination so important. This process involves one AP (front to back) radiograph of one knee taken when the yearling comes into the stable for orientation preparation and before starting pace work which gives us a definitive picture of the stage of closure of the DRGP. video preview Make Charlie and Chris s day and click on the image to the left to go to this week s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend!

While this is not the only sign of maturity it is something we can measure and gives us a predictable guide as to a yearlings ability to cope with more intensity in their training program. Chris Waller adopted this protocol since purchasing his first yearlings in Australia and it is one of the management tools that have given the horses under his care longevity in their racing careers. If a horse is a Grade C a second radiograph is recommended after 60-90 days should the horse be heading for early 2 year old races. If a horse is a Grade B then it would be a reasonable assumption that the horse would be Grade A within 90 days. Grade C Distal radius physeal (growth) plate showing no sign of closure. These horses should not be worked at a high intensity but can be educated and worked. Grade B Distal radius physeal (growth) plate starting to close. These horses can start working at 3/4 pace and move on towards racing. Grade A Distal radius physeal (growth) plate fully closed. These horses can race. To find out more about the physiology of racehorses and the forces their limbs need to be able to withstand, the BBC documentary Inside Nature s Giants on horses is brilliant although a bit graphic for those that are a bit squeemish! getting to know samantha goldsmith This week Rosehill-based trackwork rider and strapper Sam Goldsmith kindly took some time to do this week s staff interview and tell us a bit about herself. I m from the UK and arrived here last month to escape the English weather and experience working in racing in Australia. I ve been riding all my life and started in racing when I was 17 as a part time job while at university and enjoyed it so much I decided to carry on after I left. I have my own ex-racehorse back in the UK that I hunt and compete on. Nickname? Sam. Favourite quote? Follow your heart but take your brain with you. Favourite part of the job? Seeing horses you ride progress from babies to running and (hopefully) winning races. Favourite horse? Zumbelina. Best horse ever seen? Frankel. Role model? AP McCoy. Favourite food? Full English breakfast. Favourite jockey? AP McCoy. If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? David Attenborough and Obama (Albert Einstein if we can invite dead people). If you weren t in racing, what would you have done? I d probably have tried to be a forensic scientist. Event in the world that you would most like to attend? The Melbourne Cup. What would you do with your last $5? Can you do anything with $5 these days? Probably have a bet and try and make $100. Then have a very good meal while contemplating how broke I was. Tip for the weekend? Zumbelina or Pursuit of Honour.
