Introduction to this fall issue Summer racing recap Osprey to stay in Boothbay Harbor Presidents letter Sailing lessons in BHOD potluck party &picnic Waterline Newsletter of the Boothbay Harbor One Design Association The Newsletter for Sailing Enthusiasts Interested in the Boothbay Harbor One Design and Sister Class Racing Sloops Boothbay 20, Christmas Cove One Design, Great Lakes 21 (International 21), Hodgdon 21, and Christmas Cove 21. VOLUME 5 Fall Winter 2016 ISSUE 2 Waterline newsletter for Boothbay Harbor One Designs Come share your boat's story We hope to share some of the many stories about this summer and a few gems from the past. Our season went by so fast too. It's too bad snow is on its way We know of one new owner and active racer in Osprey and enjoyed both youth and adult sailing students racing in the weekly series this year. -. -This new fall issue will try to recap the fun racing season and activities involving one designs in the Harbor. We have a GL 21 Delilah sailing with us and welcome other Hodgdon 21s to join us too. We want to hear family stories of summer sailing and look forward to sharing. From the foredeck I have just completed my first ever summer sailing a BHOD and cannot say enough about how wonderful it has been. My daughter and I sailed around Southport Island in a race with the rail down, 3 foot waves and oh boy what a ride out to Cuckolds. With all the improvements made to Bittersweet last winter by David Nutt we showed her to be a sound and secure boat that does well in a blow. My son and granddaughter came too and had some good sails. Overall we had weekday races, weekend regattas and party after party...who could ask for more all in one summer. Anyway enough about our summer. Please enjoy stories we gathered and please share with us your stories too. We will collect what we can and include them in our spring issue. jon dunsford Presidents letter Dear Boothbay Harbor One Design Members and friends: What a fantastic summer we just had and hopefully everyone had enough time to get in enough sailing although some of us never get enough. This summer the BHODA added one more BHOD to their fleet here in Boothbay, 1 P age

Osprey, #26, completely restored by Maynard Bray at the Wooden Boat School and now owned by Toby and Deanna Clark. She is beautiful. This summer we had about 40 people at each of our two get-togethers. Our opening meeting was at Patti Berger s and our closing at John and Sarah Giles on their lovely home on Negro Island. At the closing meeting our members approved a new set of by-laws which will allow for the expansion of our Board and for providing grants and significant participation in activities involving the BHYC Junior and Adult Sailing. We welcome anyone who would like to come to our get-togethers. We are a friendly group of people who like to sail and have a good time together. We often get together at someone s home where we have a pot-luck supper and a short meeting. Call me if you would like to attend. Although so many of our One Design owners enjoy day sailing with friends and family, those that like to race had plenty of chances to participate in a multitude of races this summer. In addition to our weekly Wednesday night races at 4:40 pm, we raced for the opening of Windjammer Week, the annual Regatta, Commodore Cup, Classic Boats, Around Southport and our Annual One Design Race for One Designs only. Our goals are to promote small boat sailing. We give donations to such organizations as the Maine Maritime Museum and scholarships to various Jr. Sailing Programs. Debbie Swan Snyder, Pres. We sailed three races inside Tumbler Island to be easily visible from the Maine State Aquarium site. It was fun to learn that #9 Gaviota II was sailed by Steve Dickson and his sons. Nine boats came out, and Patty Berger showed us how t do it as she won the day. John and Sarah Giles in Reach came in Second and Eric Hakanson Jr 1 PM 1PM Potluck @ John & Sarah Giles cottage skippered Charisma for 3rd. Here is Eric Jr. with dad's tiller...oops 2 P age

BHOD association opening Potluck Party and meeting We had nearly 40 people come out to Patty Berger's Southport cottage and kick off the year. Commodore Eric, Sandi and son Eric Hakanson enjoy getting #25 Charisma back into racing shape. Skipper Jon, Judy and Sarah Dunsford enjoy their new #20 Bittersweet. Here Debbie, Sandi, and friends admire the view. Dock side party features Boothbay Harbor One Designs #11 Eight Bells celebrates the great work to make a new 2006 cold form version of the BHOD. She is also the basis of one for the two models The near model named Ought6 celebrates Eight bells and Osprey both redrawn in 2006 to allow cold mold modern boat buulding. The far model copies #20 Bittersweet a 1941 boat now recently restored by David Nutt Four BHOD's and 2 Radio Control scale models were gathered to be featured-at the BHYC dock party June 24 Skipper Alex and her husband Jack Herger arranged the dock party and here they enjoy their #17 Bluewitch 3 P age

Rebuild of Loon It was great fun to visit Allan Miller who has brought Loon,( sail 0 the original boat built for and owned by Geerd Hendel) to Boothbay. In his temporary shelter work area Allan is patiently rebuilding the boat to be as exactly as she was when originally sailed. He has been replacing ribs this summer and has a long way to go. We'll follow this story as it develops. Let's race around Southport The 'Around Southport Island Race' was a wonderful wild ride. We had four one designs starting, We had a good strong southwest wind and a great rodeo style ride to the windward mark. As soon as we Charisma rounded the Cuckold's mark all three BHODs were Wildfire neck and neck. As seen in the photo both Wildfire and Charisma were about to raise spinnakers and go by us. As a new skipper on Bittersweet, I did not know the changable winds around Cameron Point and behind Indian town island and we lost even more ground. Oh well maybe next year...we all finshed happy though and it was great day to sail. #26 Osprey races again in Boothbay harbor David Tew a long time sailor in the harbor took on the fun of sailing Osprey in weekday races to show her off. Wow is he good. One early Wednesday night the wind died in the middle of the second race. While we were slowly making our way down wind, David started reaching back and forth and he made Osprey fly...she even caught up to the bigger j80s and won the day. We are thrilled to learn Toby and Deanna Clarkson with their 4 children are now the proud owners of #26, Osprey. Deanna has been active in weekday races. Here she is with her sons having fun. BHYC Classic Boat races The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club sponsors two races each summer open to all sail boats with a design 25 years old or older. Visitors are all welcome. Great Lakes 21 DELILAH joins us We followed the story of Delilah, a Great Lakes 21 built here in the harbor and sold to a club in Ohio. She returned to Maine from Lake Erie [see past issues of Waterline]. Chuck Race brought her around from the Sheepscot for the two BHYC Classic races We all had great sails both days. 4 P age

Race 1 July 22 We had strong winds and started together on a We went into Linekin Bay around the mark and back to the Squirrel Island mark Here you can see Blithe Spirit ll has rounded with Cfever and Bittersweet,Polar Express and Delilah chasing. The friendship sloop with all sails flying in the lighter air was joy to watch. Blithe Spirit however beat her to the next windward mark!!! figure eight course around Squirrel Island, behind Burnt and Mouse Islands and then into the harbor. Look how we finished...with higher winds we were able to stay in line all the way around...not bad We then ran into the harbor for a fun finish and the crews all enjoyed meeting up will all the racers after at the Yacht Club. Tom Tavenner wins BHYC regatta Figuring out very fickle winds, Tom out foxed the fleet and won the BHOD class in the BHYC summer regatta. It goes to show that many years in the harbor really pays off Race 2 August17 Aug 17 was less wind and as it was changing. Bill Hunt had us wait an hour for a better blow. We all had a good run. Here you can the BHOD fleet circling before the start. 5 P age

BHOD annual race day Wow what a day! We had very strong winds and waves and wild rides for all. After a few scratches, we still had nine boats start the race. It was a wild ride out to the Squirrel Island mark. We were all well soaked from splashing waves and then flew down wind to the mark. By consensus the race was cut to once around and we all enjoyed meeting up with beer and Pizza at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club dock. It was really great to see the next generation take the first 3 spots 1. Muntaz sailed by Holly Swan and Gordie Brooks[ see photo] 2. Eight bells sailed by Liz Rettenmaier and Scott Blake... 3. Marions Weigh sailed by Jax Vanderveen... Weekday races It was great fun to see the youth sailing and adult sailing teams join us for several of these weekday races. Some days we had a good crowd and mixed it up with three classes of racers. These races are open to all sailboats in the harbor. We had great weather and only missed one week to rain. Patty Berger and her experienced crew usually showed us the way and won the series. Jon Dunsford in Bittersweet showed that if you come every week you get more points and squeezed out 2nd place. Several new sailors joined in and the sailing team at the club held clinics to support getting more people to enjoy the fun of the relaxed inner harbor races. It was fun to see the youth teams in 420s join in as well. BHOD regatta and race Aug 14 new! This was a new item put on by the club and open to all BHOD and similar size boats. Charles Barkley offered morning lessons and training for race committee teams and then challenged us to sharpen up knowing true regatta racing start signals and flags etc. This was the first attempt and we had two races with a nice breeze taking us out to Squirrel Island and back on a few loops. This event is a starting point and will be good as we have a few added boats this time of the year. We actually had a photo finish on the first race [ 44 Polar Express won] with three boats less than one boat length apart. It was great to get two J 22 boats and the adult sailing BHODs out and in this race too. The day is open to all boats in the groups with staged starts for handi-cap. Dwight and Kirsten Polar came home and sailed their #44 Polar Express actively in Wednesday and weekend races and did well today too. Here they are with a light breeze off Squirrel Island 6 P age

End of season picnic at the Giles summer cottage More than 30 of us all gathered for a fun adventure visiting the Giles home on Negro Island off Ocean point. Wow what a view. RC Model BHODs They both sailed at the Southport and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club docks as well as in West Harbor Pond.. Here is Ought 6 {the Osprey / Eightbells 2006 updated design} sailing in front of the moored fleet. Tom Tavenner, winner of the class in the BHYC regatta celebrates his birthday with the group Here is Bittersweet (the 1941 Norman Hodgdon built boat} sailing at the BHYC dock There is a video link. https://youtu.be/lamnvijx-z8 Stories we are chasing Debbie and Don Snyder lead discussion reflecting this great summer and opportunities for the group going forward #51 Ariel Let's hear about the Hunt family sailing Ariel and other boats #24 Wildfire A few years ago wildfire got a new skin; let's hear that story. #27 India Let's hear about her new home from Juniper Point??? Phil Brooks and the race to Monhegan Getting photos and story from Colin 7 P age

Check out the website The BHYC website has provided links to the BHODA groups news, applications and schedule updates. Check it out and come join us. Summer activities for 2017 The Boothbay Harbor yacht club sponsors several events during the summer. Several weekday races are open and limited to the inner harbor. They allow shake down and crew working to get ready for the weekend races as well as being fun. The weekend races take us to the limits of the outer harbor, often include the whole fleet and are really fun. They added a special small boat regatta in August this year and extended races after labor day on weekends. Till the end of September. We encouraged many new sailors and look forward to getting more people sailing next year. Waterline is published by members of the Boothbay Harbor One Design Association with all rights reserved.
