Jared Huffman Brian Reep Mark Miller Randy Morgan I would also like to welcome David Aycock and Randy Walker. David has agreed to serve a one-year term. David is fulfilling a board seat that was left open through resignation of a board member. Randy has agreed to serve a 2 year term. Randy is fulfilling a 2 year board seat that was also left open through resignation of a board member. I take great pride and privilege in serving as your president for 2018. My primary goal is to make decisions in 2018 that will help guarantee a future for Mimosa Hills members. I think we are in a pivotal time period for Mimosa Hills as well as Burke County. Continued on page 2
From the President : 2 Continued from page 1 There are a number of exciting things on the horizon for Burke County and I hope that Mimosa Hills can be involved and benefit from these. With the memberships help, your 2018 board of directors can help make Mimosa the club that we all love and enjoy. Golf - You have received your 2018 Tournament Schedule. I would like to make one adjustment to the tournament calendar. Unfortunately, we will no longer host the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational. Through much deliberation and discussion, the Cheves family has decided to discontinue this tournament. As I am sure most of you are, I am sad to see this tournament go. This tournament helped highlight a lot of the great tradition and history of Mimosa Hills. The golf committee is exploring some alternatives and we will update you as soon as those are available. House Bernice is making some modifications to the menu. Please let us know your thoughts on these changes. Bernice is also planning some exciting events in Food and Beverage. On the horizon we are planning a Bingo night, family specials, wine tastings, etc. Your board of directors welcomes all feedback and ideas. Preservation Donors Club Thanks to Bill and Adam Beutell we were able to save a substantial amount of money on the bunker project. This is giving us the ability to use those funds to do some work on hole 14. We will be removing a couple trees as well as putting down some sod in some of the bare places. This will be similar to the work that was done on hole 12 just on a smaller scale. The board of directors approved the 2018 preservation donors club project as working on the Bermuda encroachment on the greens. The encroachment becomes more apparent in the winter months. This is a necessary project to keep our bent grass greens in great shape. We would like to urge everyone that can to participate in the preservation donors club. Lastly, we urge everyone to participate in the electronic statements as well as the automatic credit card billing. These two programs have been a success in the savings of postage and printing as well as helping our monthly cash flow. There are sign-up sheets located in the business office as well as the golf shop. Jordan N. Greene 2018 Board President

On The Course: 6 In the month of February we will continue with cutting down dead and dying trees, topping off about a dozen bunkers with more sand and some other miscellaneous projects. Later in the month we will be spraying our spring / summer pre-emergent weed control. We use the blue dye to spray accurately. Of course the weather can be challenging as it was in January. The freezing and thawing of the greens during the cold weather has Mthe a y greens 2 0 1 4spongy thus very bumpy from the foot traffic. Be careful in the bunkers when they are frozen. It may be best to take relief. The course has been on the wet side due to the rain and snow. The greens will be aerified and topdressed March 6-9 (Tues. Fri.). We go with smaller diameter holes in March verses May and Sept. in order to get them healed up as soon as possible due to colder temperatures that hinder growth. As stated in many newsletters over the years we follow USGA guidelines for organic matter removal and sand topdressing to the best of our abilities. We are on the low end of their amounts but have our organic levels measured each year. We also invite Carolinas Golf Association agronomist Bill Anderson each spring for evaluation and suggestions for our program and projects. If you have any questions please pass them on to a board member to be asked during this visit. The week following the greens aerification we start aerifying the entire golf course. With our limited staff and equipment this can take a couple of weeks so bare with us. Weather can hinder progress. It works out best to get the bermudagrass done early in the season when we have the time to dedicate. In summer we are too busy with other necessary duties. Dan Winters, Superintendent
