Windjammers For anyone who likes circuses, and circus music, there has been an organization around since 1971 that serves to promote the interests of both. It is called: Windjammers http://www.circusmusic.org/ This organization is the keeper of the flame for the continued interest in, and performance of, circus bands and circus music. Including music that is not generally well known today. In addition to producing a bi-monthly newsletter sharing info about the history of circus bands and of specific musicians, http://www.circusmusic.org/test.pdf

this group holds conventions twice a year. Any member of Windjammers who plays a horn can then spend time during the convention practicing and recording music. If you think you don t like circus music, you are apparently mistaken as to what that really is. After all, during the course of a show, the circus bands would play anything from marches, to waltzes, to novelty numbers, to show tunes, to folk songs, and even classical music if it was needed for that specific act. The history of circus bands is fascinating, and includes stories about some of the most well known composers. And many songs were written by some of these composers specifically referencing specific circus organizations, circus musicians, and a variety of things about the circus, like even the birth of an elephant (a greatly welcomed event for a circus). (EXAMPLE : Baby Boo, 1904, written by Fred Jewell about the birth of a baby elephant in the circus winter headquarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus in Baraboo, Wisconsin). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da5earifu1i http://www.barnhouse.com/composers.php?id=-102 The Pumpkin Show Band connection to circuses: Some of the more seniored members of the Pumpkin Show Band will remember Roger Carroll (tuba), although I may not have spelled his last name correctly. Roger has since passed, but he had held many different jobs in and around Chillicothe, including being a band director for a Ross County school for several years. Somewhere around the late 70 s to early 80 s, Roger just up and joined the Carson and Barnes circus band, where he played tuba for @ 3 years. http://www.carsonbarnescircus.com/ Because of this connection, in the early 80 s several members of the Pumpkin Show Band and Adelphi Band were able to sit in with the Carson and Barnes circus band when they came to Chillicothe to perform. Two shows a day, for 2 hours each show. In fact, in September 1981, some of the Pumpkin Show Band and Adelphi Band members were playing with the Carson and Barnes circus band behind the Sears store in the Chillicothe Mall, when an elephant got kind of excited, ran around

the circus tent (including running by the band who was basically playing at ground level), left the tent, and went all the way to the other end of the mall and broke the store front window at Pennys. And the band played on (seriously). http://www.circushistory.org/publications/circusreport02nov1981.pdf (page 12) Circus Band Facts: 1. Merle Evans (1891 to 1987) was probably the world s foremost circus band conductor. Although he was with other circus bands first, he conducted the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey s circus band for 50 years, and NEVER missed a performance, which was counted by some to be @ 22,000 performances. He died at the age of 96. http://www.nytimes.com/1988/01/03/obituaries/merle-evans-is-deadformer-band-leader-at-ringling-brothers.html 2. Henry Fillmore ( Lassus Trombone ) left home to join the circus and became not only a circus musician but a performer in the circus, after an argument with his father over a girl. Henry married the girl, also a circus performer, and later reconciled with his father and joined him in the Fillmore publishing house in Cincinnati. 3. John Phillip Sousa was ready to leave home and join the circus when his father enrolled him as an apprentice in the Marine band. 5. Substitute Director for 3-17-2015 Eric Dieterich (tuba) will be filling in for David as Director for Tuesday 3-17- 2015. 6. Practice List for 3-10-2015 For those of you who were unable to attend practice tonight, here is a copy of the 3-10-2015 practice list as we get closer to the Spring Concert.: With Malice Toward None The Sound of Music The Valiant Years (just passed out tonight)
