GITAG - Zenith Trials low headline scraper trawls Original trawl Test trawl Main differences Bottom panel Top panel bottom panel Top panel Lighter plastic bobbins in bosom square mesh panel increased from standard 110mesh to 200mm
GITAG - Zenith Trials Results summary - Similar quantities of nephrops in both trawls Similar quantities of monkfish in both trawls. Reduction in catches of haddock, whiting cod, hake and saithe ranging from 25% to 85% less. Reduction in catches of small flats but increased catches of larger flats
GITAG Aurelia Trials low headline scraper trawls 300mm square mesh panel
GITAG - Atlas Trials low headline scraper trawl Square mesh panels along the wings of a trawl to release larger fish cod. Codend doubled in circumference. GITAG Amity trials inclined net grid Horizontal square mesh section Inclined square mesh net grid
GITAG Amity trials inclined net grid Results of long term trials. High percentage of fish can be separated from the target species of nephrops. There was no loss of target species, nephrops. Quality of target species, nephrops is recognisably better using the trial gear. Quality of fish (by-catch) is recognisably better using the trial gear.
GITAG Adorne trials square mesh codends Results of long term trials. Specialist netting being sourced Project will be done on Pair Seine boats.
Marine Scotland Research into fish reactions to lights Research into state of the art fish selection devices.
BIM trials of inclined net grid in Southern Irish Sea Similar results as Amity trials further trails in 2017
CEFAS - England Net grid work in NE nephrops fishery approved as an aid to nephrops survivability. Several trials with simple version of the net grid to release all the fish To the mouth of the trawl. Reduced discards in the region of 63%. 5 % less whiting, 74% less haddock, 90% less plaice 66% less lemon sole.
CEFAS - England Low headline trawl trials in SW haddock fishery Initial trials showed marked reduction in haddock catches further work ongoing.
CEFAS - England Exploratory work with lights on escape gaps in trawls. Ongoing further development of trawl lights. On going work with separator panels in SW fishery. To separate whiting from squid
DAERA Northern Ireland Recent work with on nephrops trawls 200mmdiamond mesh panels in top panel 200mm square mesh in top of nephrops.
DAERA Northern Ireland Trialled lights on headline of the trawl. Only 4 hauls initial results - reduction in numbers of large whiting Increase in numbers of small whiting Further experimental work ongoing into effects of sound and light on fish behaviour
DAERA Northern Ireland Developing an industry led selectivity project On similar lines to the Scottish GITAG project
SEAFISH - Partner in GITAG project gear expertise Partner in Northern Ireland selectivity project Gear technology support to CEFAS in FSP projects Flume Tank gear technology and selectivity courses Support to local fisheries through regional teams
Future work next few years GITAG Industry Selectivity project in NI CEFAS fisheries science project (FSP) Future work longer term Lights and sound in used to influence gear selectivity High tech selectivity projects
