MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Guardians, Alumni, and Friends, Thank you to the many families who were able to join us for school Mass this past Sunday. Students who came to the 10:30AM Mass in uniform received a Free Dress pass for tomorrow, September 21st. Please have your child turn in their dress pass to his/her teacher. Thank you to our wonderful choir students who sang so beautiful and who enrich our school Mass each week. This past Tuesday, our MERCY club sent out a survey regarding the Fund-a-Future project. This survey closes at the end of the day on Friday, so please take a few minutes to participate. Your feedback is very valuable. As the results come in, I personally have been reading all of the comments. I will address some of your concerns through the Shamrock over the next few weeks. The first concern that I have read in parent surveys is school safety. My husband has been in law enforcement for 20 years. Each school I have been in my husband has put me in contact with local law enforcement who will do an assessment of our property, safety and security measures. I take school safety very seriously. During my husband s vacation next month, he will come and observe our drop off and pick up patterns and procedures. Our school has also established a safety team that will be meeting later this month. I have been working closely with the parish office on discussions of fencing around the property and bids are currently being obtained. As this project progresses, I will inform our families.

2 Shamrock Newsletter After our safety team meets, our yard supervisors will also meet to discuss a rotation of classes using the grass field for play. Currently, I am searching for another part time aide, Monday- Thursday from 12-4PM that can assist us in yard supervision and extended care. This will allow for enough coverage and a rotation using the grass field. Our lower grades are currently on a rotation schedule for the Tot- Lot play structure. In addition, Mrs. Hensley proposed a project that was approved by the pastor and myself that will add some play equipment in our younger grades. The installation of this project will need to take place over a school break. If you d like to view a video of this equipment, please visit https://www.playlsi.com/en/commercial-playground-equipment/playground-components/drop-shot/ If you are interested in donating toward this specific project, please let me know. Again, thank you for your feedback. I appreciate partnering with you in providing the best that we can at St. A s! Blessings, Mrs. Olivia Brazil, Principal SCHOOL NEWS The 31st annual National Geographic Geography Bee is around the corner. The combined 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Geography Bee will be Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 8:30am. ATHLETIC NEWS Volleyball Once again the 5th/6th Grade Girls split the matches last weekend. They easily beat St. John s Healdsburg in two matches but couldn t get past the incredible serving of St. Rose. Karlin McLean was on fire with 5 incredible serves in a row in her rookie season while Hailey Tennant returned the ball time and time again with cat like reflexes. The girls really worked as a team and finally perfected their team cheer. The 7 th Grade Girls faced the strongest serving team in their league when they welcomed St. Francis to the St. A s Gym on Saturday. St. Francis maintained their unbeaten run in the league as they defeated the Shamrocks 25-13 and 25-7 despite a great effort by the girls against the fierce serving. The girls came out stronger early in their second match-up against St. Eugene but with a roster of only 6 players available on the day, were worn down as the match progressed, going down 25-13 and 25-9. Isabel McEvoy was strong all over the court, returning almost every ball that got within her reach, while Alice Bourke overcame some serving yipps in the first match to serve strongly in the second, not missing a serve. The 8th Grade Volleyball Team had a great weekend, winning matches against Blue Oak and St. Eugene s, and winning our Monday match against St. Helena Montessori. In our first match Saturday we quickly toppled Blue Oak in two games, 25-8 and 25-15. In the first game, Sofia L. led the way with 10 serves resulting in points. Consistent bumps from Rachel along with setting from Lizzie, Jillian and Gabrielle led to excellent hitting from Maria and an easy win. The second game continued the onslaught of steady serving from Anna, Abigail and Sophia N. Defensive efforts from Dominique and Hilary combined with steady bumping from Kendall and great hitting from Hannah sealed the victory. Our second match versus St Eugene s led to victory in three games 25-8, 23-25, 15-10. Our first game went quickly with un-returnable serves from every player for the game: Sofia L., Rachel, Adriana, Gabrielle, Lizzie, Maria and Jillian. Jillian closed the game with a run of six serves. Our second game literally went to the wire when the last ball just barely rolled over the top the net out of reach, giving the game to St. Eugene s. Anna led the way with a run of 6 serves. Hannah and Sophia N. displayed

6 Shamrock Newsletter their skills with tips and hits. Dominique, Sophia N. and Hilary led the defense with bumps and digs while Abigail and Kendall stopped many deep serves with solid bump returns. Our third game went quickly. We never trailed, led by Maria s six jump serves and solid hitting. Hits from Adriana and Jillian, bumping and setting by Gabrielle, Lizzie and Rachel all contributed to a great match. Winning our Monday game vs. St. Helena Montessori 25-21, 16-25, 15-3 redeemed our loss of one week ago. In the first game, bumping, setting and hitting from every player and solid serving from Maria, Lizzie and Adriana controlled the game. Excellent defensive play from Gabrielle, Jillian and Rachel deflated all of St. Helena s offensive efforts to catch us in the end. Our second game went well but we were unable to overcome solid serving from St Helena. Hannah and Hilary led the way with 5 and 4 straight serves scoring points. Our third game was a runaway starting with Gabrielle s seven unanswered serves with multiple aces, Maria s rocket jump serves and ending with Sofia L. s two consecutive aces. Solid defensive efforts from Jillian, Rachel, Lizzie and Adriana stifled any attempted offense by St. Helena. All 5 th -8 th grade students interested in playing basketball for St. A s this year must have their registration forms submitted to the school office by the end of the school day Friday, September 21 st. Please see the attached registration form. Thank you!
