New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union Incorporated Annual Report 2006

Chairman s Report The Union will record a small surplus in 2006 despite wet weather adversely affecting our Finals Series revenue. This good result is due largely to the Service Agreement entered into with the NSWRU, which saw our Union take on the responsibility for running the Premiership competition and some Waratah match day event work. As of 2007 we will also resume the administration of Juniors. Congratulations to Mark Green and his staff for so ably handling this extra workload. A 27% increase in sponsorship revenue has helped minimise costs to clubs and I would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous support of Suburban Rugby without it, playing rugby would be a much more expensive proposition. It should be noted that we have been able to hold affiliation fees steady now for over 12 years. On the representative scene we did not have a successful season on the field. The Union s Board wishes all clubs to take pride in their representative team so we will be taking steps to make sure the team quickly gets back to its winning ways. This will only be achieved if all Suburban clubs, particularly the stronger ones, support the representative program. Thank you to Peter Bromley and Chuck Ardron for their efforts in coaching the team. Thank you also to Andrew Choice, Darrin Leis and Damian Henry for guiding the re-introduction of the Suburban U19 representative program this season. I wish to thank my fellow Board Members for their efforts throughout the year. The Board meets monthly and continues to guide the Union well in all its many areas of responsibility. The Board dealt most effectively, and unapologetically harshly, with some ill disciplined clubs, as well as making some difficult grading decisions. The Board next year will have to take steps to ensure we are getting early, accurate and honest assessments of player strength from lower division clubs. To the Judiciary and Appeals Tribunal members, thank you for your ongoing efforts in a difficult task. Thank you also to the referees who donate their time each week to ensure that we actually have a game. Congratulations must be extended to Bryn Robertson, President of Knox Old Boys RFC for another outstanding season which culminated in a 1 st Division Club Championship. Congratulations also to Drummoyne for winning its fourth Kentwell Cup. Two clubs from 2 nd Division also deserve special mention Barker Old Boys for winning the Reliance Shield and earning promotion to 1 st Division after just one season in 2 nd Division; and Beecroft, the Suburban Club of the Year, winning three premierships. Well done! Enjoy the off season, as we look forward to a World Cup in France and the introduction of the National Competition in Australia. I am confident that our Union will continue to thrive and be a vibrant member of the rugby community during this exciting change to our game. To all Suburban clubs, players, officials, volunteers and supporters thank you once again for your support of our game - the game for the game itself. Executive Director s Report 2006 proved to be a very busy year for Suburban Rugby. Congratulations to Drummoyne for winning the Kentwell Cup in fine style, losing only one match all year and to Knox Old Boys for winning the Bruce Graham Shield for Division One Club Champions for the first time in the club s history. A special mention to Colleagues who once again fielded eleven teams, with seven teams participating in finals series matches. The club also had to deal with a tragic start to the season when Colleague Angus Ross passed away following a Halligan Cup match in Round One. Barker Old Boys will be participating in the Kentwell Cup next year for the first time after winning the Reliance Shield in their first year back in Division Two. Congratulations to the other Club Championship winners namely; Briars (Division Three), Fairvale (Division Four) and Roseville (Division Five). Kurt Sproule (St Patricks) was awarded the Kentwell Medal for player of the year, whilst Scott Monaghan (Drummoyne) was presented the Golden Boots for the man of the match in the Kentwell Cup grand Final. Off the field, Jerry Liutaki (Canterbury) won the Rugby Club Coach of the Year award, guiding the club s Jeffrey Cup team to a Premiership. Congratulations to long serving Blue Mountains Club Secretary Chris Moloney who was recognised with the Union s Service to Rugby Award. Beecroft capped off a tremendous year winning the overall Club of the Year Award in addition to the Barraclough Cup premiership, Richardson Cup joint premiership, U85KG premiership and Tom Kelly s Barraclough Medal. Three new clubs joined the Union; Maccabi, Dee Why and Sydney University. In successful debuts Sydney University were runners-up in the Meldrum Cup and Maccabi just missed out on a finals berth. Unfortunately the Union lost Burraneer prior to Round one and Matraville and Wests folded in the early stages of the season which had a negative affect on a number of competitions. The Union tries to grade clubs in the correct divisions, however we rely heavily on accurate club updates and self assessment to ensure that this occurs. Financially we are in very good shape with a modest surplus recorded. The Union was reminded of how critical a role the weather plays in our financial success. A very wet finals day on 9 September severely affected crowd numbers across all venues and divisions and reduced our finals series gate revenue by $15K. Finals Series matches were played Sydney wide with seven venues utilised, including T.G. Millner for the Division One and Two Grand Finals, David Phillips Field, Wills Ground, Norford Park, C.A. Redmond, Macquarie University & Blackmore Reserve. For the first time, NSWSRU managed the NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) Premiership Competition and Matt Want was appointed NSWRU Premiership Competition Manager. The NSWSRU administered the Premiership Clubs day to day competition requirements including such things as draws, tables, results, finals series, judiciary and registrations, as well as facilitating various meetings. Through the generosity of Interfuse, Premiership Clubs utilised the same technology that had previously only been afforded to Suburban clubs. This arrangement allowed Suburban rugby to make use of its economies of scale and ability to successfully manage large scale rugby competitions whilst providing a new revenue stream for the Union. Whilst Matt Want experienced a very steep learning curve he handled the new position most professionally and is to be congratulated. Some NSWRU events work was also undertaken for which the Union was compensated. This included Tim Richards gaining valuable experience in match day management for Super 14 and International fixtures. With the increased workload David Livanes joined the NSWSRU staff, whilst Tim Richards continued in his role as Suburban Competition Manager which he does with aplomb. 2006 saw the introduction of an Under 85KG competition, with seven NSWSRU clubs involved in the inaugural season. Matches were played mid-week under lights and gave people an opportunity to play against players of like size. This encouraged new players to the game and kept existing players from drifting away. NSW Rugby Union provided $5000 prizemoney for the competition which was won by Beecroft 13-10 in a nail biter over Mosman at Rawson Park, in front of a crowd of over 500. The competition will continue in 2007 and we encourage more clubs and players to become involved. Five players from this competition were selected along with NSW Premiership, Country and other Suburban players to represent NSW at the World Championships in Thailand in October. The Trim-Tahs returned triumphant, going through the tournament undefeated. After a five year hiatus the U19s representative team reformed and played a two match home and away series against NSW Country. Although comprehensively beaten on both occasions it has given us a good platform on which to build for future years. Unfortunately the senior representative team also had an unsuccessful season and for the first time in 14 years the Barraclough Shield went north to Queensland. Rest assured, plans are already afoot to return the shield to Sydney next year. I am pleased to report that SmartRugby, which was rolled out nationally during 2006, was well supported by Suburban Clubs, with a 100% compliance rate. SmartRugby is Australian Rugby s occupational health and safety program. This meant that every Suburban team had at least one coach that was SmartRugby qualified. The implementation of this program has been short listed for a NSW Sports Injuries Award for 2006. The Union re-signed its major sponsor Data Solutions for another two years and we thank David Webb and Suzanne Pence for their support of Suburban Rugby. International Sports Tours came on board and we look forward to successful partnerships with these companies in the future. The ongoing support of all our sponsors is appreciated and I thank; Interfuse, Canterbury - New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union 2006 Annual Report

Executive Director s Report International, Coca-Cola, Gilbert, Icons of Sport, Woodwin Vision, The Rugby Club, Leuko (Beiersdorf Australia) and Australian Rugby News & Review and Rugby E- News. I hope that Suburban clubs and their members continue their support of our sponsors who in turn assist in defraying the costs of participating. The Union acknowledges the passing of two of Suburban Rugby s finest administrators and life members; Mr John Barraclough AM and Mr Ron McLean. John was also a life member of NSWRU and Woollahra Colleagues and was President of NSWSRU from 1964 to 1989 and then Patron from 1990 to 1999. Ron was also a life member of the Petersham RFC. Under Ron s guidance in 1966 Petersham became the first club in the world to embark on a world tour. Ron was a vice president of NSWSRU 1970-1996. The Union introduced the David Swan Shield for Division Five Club Champions in memory of David Swan who passed away earlier this year. David played his rugby with CBOBS before taking up the whistle and later becoming a referee coach. In a fitting tribute to David, his wife Lesley and children presented the Shield on Kentwell Cup Grand Final day to Roseville. The Union acknowledges the administrative and financial help of NSWRU, and thank in particular Chairman Arvid Peterson and CEO Fraser Neill and their staff for their support of Suburban Rugby. To the Union s volunteer Judiciary and Appeals Tribunal members thank you for doing a difficult job well. To the Suburban Board of Directors led by Chairman Ian Ross and President Dan Moore thank you for taking the time over and above your regular club commitments to ensure that the Union is run in the best possible manner. The NSWSRU looks forward to the new year, which will include a move into the NSW Rugby Union Centre of Excellence, currently being built next to our offices at Aussie Stadium. The Union will have access to the latest in rugby resources and the administration centre will be world class. Suburban Rugby could not continue to operate without its army of volunteer officials including referees, coaches and administrators. Thank you for your invaluable contribution and I look forward to your continued support of Suburban Rugby in the future. The Queensland Suburban side had not tasted victory in the annual H H Barraclough Shield matches since 1992. They were not to be denied their long awaited win in 2006. The NSW Country Cockatoos had obviously not forgotten their defeat to NSW Suburban when the two last played in 2003. Coming off their Australian Rugby Shield campaign in May the Cockatoos proved too strong when we met in Maitland in June. The Union thanks coaches Peter Bromley and Chuck Ardron for their efforts and support of Suburban Rugby. NSW Suburban v Queensland Suburban Macquarie University, 11 June 2006 QLD Suburban 17 Tries: Leon Makari, Rob Donahue. Conversions: Chris Staunton (2). Penalty Goal: Chris Staunton. Conversions: Elliott Tourle (3). NSW Suburban - 12 Tries - Peter Altona, Jakheb Matthews. Conversion: Steve Irwin. Under 19 Representative Team After an absence of five seasons, the NSWSRU reintroduced an U19 Representative program. This was done in close consultation with those clubs endeavouring to field U19 teams, and whilst this year s results did not go our way, the Union believes it was a worthwhile first step. The small pool of players in the Suburban U19 competition and the short representative program, consisting of two matches against a very strong opposition, made the reformation of the Suburban U19s a difficult task. The Union records its thanks to the U19 management team - coaches Andrew Choice and Darrin Leis, and manager Damian Henry for their efforts. 6 - New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union 2006 Annual Report

Led by former Suburban representative coaches John Morrison and Warren Hodge, the squad was picked primarily from Premiership and Suburban clubs. Five players were selected from the Sydney U85kg competition. The Trim-Tahs excelled in the oppressive Thailand weather, winning all three pool matches and then easily accounting for the Dingoes, the Australian Indigenous side in the final. Unfortunately, as the table indicates, they were busier than last year, with a 16% increase in Judiciary matters. Thanks also to the Union s Appeals Tribunal of Richard Harvey (Chairman), Paul Angus, Phil Brown, Danny Hinton and Warren Gorman. Four clubs appealed Judiciary decisions this year.
