New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union Incorporated Annual Report 2005

Chairman s Report 2005 saw another successful year for our Union. Playing numbers were again around 7,500 and prudent financial management resulted in a small surplus. There were also several notable achievements. Our Executive Director, Mark Green chalked up ten years with the Union, seven of those in the top job. In July we were handed the responsibility of selecting, coaching and managing a NSW team for the inaugural International U85kg competition in Thailand. John Morrison, Tim Richards, Warren Hodge, Todd Payne and Jerry Murphy took a squad which comprised 16 Suburban, five Country and five Premiership players and saw them victorious over Auckland in the final. Our representative team also continued their unbeaten run with victories over Queensland and combined Australian Services. Over 18,000 people attended our final series with a record crowd witnessing a thrilling Kentwell Grand Final. On a financial note, our reserves are approaching the level where the returns on our investments and other initiatives should alleviate the need for the Union to rely on our clubs for the means to continually improve the level of service. Just recently we negotiated a service agreement with NSW for us to administer the NSW Premiership from next year and to assist in the event management of the Super 14 matches. This will not only provide another income stream but will also provide our staff with additional experience and opportunities. All of this is testament to the ability and dedication of our staff so capably led by Mark Green. It is a constant source of amazement to those in other sporting organisations that we can do what we do and achieve what we achieve with a staff of three. To Mark, Tim Richards and Matt Want, the Union recognises and the clubs appreciate your untiring efforts. I would also like to thank my fellow members of the Board of Directors who continue to work diligently to foster and enhance Suburban Rugby s performance whilst at all times respecting its great traditions. Particular mention should be made of Woollahra Colleagues outstanding season. Apart from winning the 1 st Division Club Championship and three premierships, Colleagues is now the largest senior rugby club in Australia, regularly fielding eleven teams an amazing effort for a volunteer organization. Well done also to Knox Old Boys for winning the Kentwell which culminates an amazing climb through the lower divisions over the past four years; and to Campbelltown Harlequins for winning the 2 nd Division Club Championship and thus earning promotion to the Kentwell. The support of good sponsors is essential to the successful running of any sporting organisation, and we are lucky to have a range of very fine sponsors. The Union enjoyed a 50% increase in sponsorship revenue this year, reflecting the contributions of our new sponsors, Data Solutions Australia, The Rugby Club and Woodwin Vision. Our generous sponsors have helped minimise costs to clubs and I would like here to record my thanks to them all: Data Solutions Australia, Woodwin Vision, Interfuse, Beiersdorf Australia (Leuko), Coca-Cola, Gilbert, Australian Rugby Review, Canterbury, The Rugby Club, Big Sister Laundry and Icons of Sport. It appears that the never ending saga of the 3 rd Tier will be comprehensively addressed through a thorough and independent process early in the New Year. It is quite possible that, as a result of this, the structure of Rugby in Sydney may undergo significant changes. Our Union will certainly be involved in the process and whilst it is far too early to even contemplate what changes may occur, as things progress our member clubs will be kept informed. Finally, my thanks and best wishes go to all Suburban Rugby volunteers players, coaches and administrators your dedication to the game we all love will ensure a vibrant future. Executive Director s Report As 2005 draws to a close NSW Suburban Rugby Union continues to be in good shape administratively, financially and on the field. Three new clubs affiliated in 2005 - Wests, Bronte Surf Life Savers and Balmain. To their credit, both Wests (Walker ) and Bronte (Meldrum ) won premierships in their respective divisions. Disappointingly, only four U19s teams participated in The Rugby Club this year. The Union has already commenced planning in an attempt to increase the size of the competition for next year. The Union is in a sound financial position. Income from affiliation, registration and finals series remained similar to last year s record levels. There was a significant increase in sponsorship revenue largely due to the introduction of a new major sponsor; Data Solutions Australia. Conversely, significant savings have been made since the consolidation of Rugby administration in NSW under one roof at Aussie Stadium. I am pleased to report that the Union is part of NSW Rugby Union s plan for its new state of the art Rugby training and administration facility at Aussie Stadium which will be completed by the end of 2006. During 2005 the Union was successful in gaining a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation which allowed women involved with clubs to gain coaching and refereeing accreditation free of charge. The Kentwell Grand Final Day attracted a record crowd to see Knox Old Boys claim their first ever Kentwell premiership. Woollahra Colleagues won the Bruce Graham Shield for Division One Club Champions and were represented in four Grand Finals, winning three. Campbelltown and Epping will be promoted to Divisions One and Two respectively for their efforts in winning their Club Championships. Campbelltown also won the overall club of the year award. All Division One and Two teams fielded an U21s team in their respective competitions for the first time in the Union s history. Knox s successful Kentwell Coach Peter Bromley won the inaugural Coach of the Year award in his rookie season whilst his captain Hamish Bayliss won the Kentwell Medal for the best and fairest player in Division One, adding to his Golden Boots award for man of the match in the Grand Final. Hamish also gained representative honors with the Suburban Representative Team and NSW U85kg team. Forest stalwart Dave Dickerson won the Service to rugby award. The Suburban representative team had an undefeated season, including a victory over Australian Services for only the second time in the Union s history, as well as an 11 th consecutive Barraclough Shield win over Queensland Suburban. Congratulations to head coach John Morrison and his coaching and management team on an outstanding season. Testimony to their success was their appointment to the first ever NSW Rugby Union U85KG Team for their tour to Thailand to participate in the inaugural U85KG World Championships. This Union was asked by NSWRU to coordinate the entire tour which it did with only 20 days notice. 16 Suburban players were selected for the 26 man squad which was captained by Kristian Berghofer from Blacktown RFC and managed by the Union s Rugby Administrator, Tim Richards. Despite the short preparation, the team defeated Auckland in extra time in the final, 14-12, to claim the title of World Champions. Pleasingly, there were 21 fewer send offs than last year. The Union translated its Code of Conduct into Samoan, Tongan and Fijian and appointed a Pacific Islander Judicial Counsel as part of its strategy to improve discipline across the Union. The Union introduced an early plea system for minor offences, which saw 15 of the 17 eligible people take an early plea and as a result not attend the Judiciary. In line with the Union s tough stance on ill-discipline, Claymore was expelled from the competition. The Vikings mid-season withdrawal from the Division One competition (after assurances from the club that it would be able to compete in Division One) was regrettable and the Union hopes that they can rebuild in a lower Division in 2006. The Union was fortunate to attract a number of new sponsors this year including major sponsors Data Solutions Australia, The Rugby Club and Woodwin Vision. These were in addition to the Union s long term sponsors; Interfuse, Coca-Cola, Australian Rugby News & Review and Rugby E-News, Gilbert, Icons of Sport, Canterbury, Leuko (Beiersdorf Australia) and Big Sister Laundry. All these sponsors provide much needed financial support which allows the Union to minimise costs to clubs. On a sad note Keith Harris passed away during the year. The Union thanks Barbara Harris who presented the Doc Harris shield for Division Three Club Champions on behalf of her late husband. Over 75 Suburban coaches attended coaching - New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union 2005 Annual Report

Executive Director s Report courses throughout Sydney. The Union will offer subsidised Coaching Courses for all clubs in 2006, thanks to the generous support of The Rugby Club. On-line results sheets became common place this season with over 80% of clubs utilising the system. The Union used SMS to distribute the results of all games, and updated all competition results, tables and club championships by 7pm match day - making the Union s website one of the most visited Rugby sites in Australia. Finally, I would like to thank my highly professional staff; Tim Richards and Matt Want whose work ethic and dedication to Suburban Rugby is invaluable. My appreciation is extended to the Judiciary and Appeals Tribunal members who do a difficult job well. To the Board of Suburban Rugby who dedicate countless hours to ensure that this Union is run in the best possible way, particularly Chairman Ian Ross, who represents this Union on the NSW Rugby Union Board, and President Dan Moore who watched 33 different clubs play this year thank you. To NSW Rugby Union, thank you for your support financially and administratively. We look forward in earnest to a successful year ahead. Judiciary Report The Judiciary functions particularly efficiently due to the lengthy service provided by Deputy Chairman Tony Beger and Jim Melrose. This year the Judiciary welcomed new member Geoff Cramp whose enthusiasm and dedication will result in him becoming a long term member. All members have indicated that they will back up again for another season in 2006. There were 107 send offs this year, a 16% decrease from the record high of 128 in 2004. This was pleasing overall. The introduction of the early plea system has worked well for the Judiciary, accounting for 15 matters or 14% of all send offs. For the Judiciary this saved us between two and three nights work. What was not pleasing again this year was the referee abuse statistics. Of the misconduct offences, 18 Judiciary Statistics 2005 Suspensions Offence 2005 2004 Striking 30 30 Dangerous Tackle 16 13 Rucking 8 10 Misconduct (ref) 18 38 Kicking 3 10 2 nd Yellow Card 19 16 Other 6 5 Not Proven 7 6 Total 107 128 Clubs that exceeded their tolerable level Liverpool 7 (2 over) Fairvale 5 (2 over) Rockdale 4 (2 over) Bankstown 4 (1 over) Claymore 2 (1 over) Send offs Year 1998 88 1999 106 2000 89 2001 103 2002 88 2003 91 2004 128 2005 107 involved referee abuse, threat and assault. Further, of the 19 double yellow card offences, 12 involved referee abuse. Although total numbers were down, 28% of all cases were offences involving referees, which is slightly up from last year s 27%. This statistic is not acceptable and clubs themselves must ensure that respect towards the referee is maintained at all times and that contact between players and referee is properly controlled. Vigilance by club officials of issues between a player and referee may be able to be settled quickly before things get out of hand. Player registration issues did not figure very prominently during the season although it appears that some clubs continue to pay lip service to the correct process. Registration occupies such an important function that high penalties to clubs and players will continue to be imposed for breaches. The Judiciary will continue to ensure that severe penalties are imposed where needed to ensure that everyone can play the game in the right spirit and safely. During the off season the citing rules will be looked at and guidance provided to all clubs. This year there were some citings involving serious offences which were found not proven solely due to the fact that the citing club did not comply with the citing rules. There were 15 clubs this year that should be applauded for having no established offences recorded against them: Div 1: Knox Old Boys Waverley Div 2: Blacktown Lindfield Div 4: Lane Cove Oakhill UWS Hawkesbury Div 5: Atiu Sydney Balmain Burraneer Roseville Div 6: KWP Manly Savers Terrey Hills UWS Bankstown To the left is a table which shows the statistics for the 2005 season. Whilst Sunday trial matches against club sides are always less than perfect preparation, this match at least had the virtue of mostly confirming the rightness of the selectors wisdom and so the squad was able to move basically unchanged into the full representative program. The first match in that program was against the strong Australian Combined Services team at historic Victoria Barracks on Wednesday 22 June. Playing on a superb field and supported by an enthusiastic crowd, the Suburban team absorbed sustained pressure from ASRU in the first 20 minutes. Eventually the class and grit of the Suburban team started to pay dividends and the scoring began. Outstanding play by fullback James Lagiloa (Briars), Rohan Sawyer (St Pats) and boom young lock Adam Choice (Campbelltown) led to tries for the Suburban team. The pressure on ASRU did not let up as lock Joeli Lutumaiilagi (Oatley), Scott Monaghan (Drummoyne), and lanky flanker Peter Altona (UNSW) continued to dominate their opposite numbers. Other standouts for NSWSRU were Paul Grey (Forest), classy half-back Hamish Bayliss (Knox Old Boys) and, as always, inspirational Captain Kristian Berghofer (Blacktown). New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union 2005 Annual Report -

Representative Team ASRU fought till the final whistle but succumbed to a superior team which relished the 31-12 victory and the opportunity to retain the Kevin Wheatley V.C. Memorial Trophy. Attention then turned to our annual clash against Queensland Suburban for the H. H. Barraclough Shield, held this year at Ballymore on Friday 1 July. Quickly shaking off the effects of a long day of traveling, the match started at a frenetic pace with both sides keen to attack despite the wet conditions. The class of fly half, Jake Havebond (Waverley) soon emerged, as did that of Hamish Bayliss (Knox OB), so that it was 7-0 to NSW after 7 minutes. This lead was further extended after sustained pressure from the tight five, led by the tenacious tough prop David Hankinson (Drummoyne), and the uncompromising brothers from Forest, Nick Williams and Kehu Kingi. The game seemed to be slipping away from Queensland after Havebond potted a freakish 40m field goal but the Reds gamely refused to concede defeat and scored two tries in quick succession. The infamous Queensland passion to defeat NSW, particularly after 12 barren years, meant that the Reds were never completely out of the game, pushing the NSW team right up until full-time. However, untiring work from Rohan Sawyer (St Pats), Ben Farrow (UNSW) and Captain Kristian Berghofer saw NSW home, 25-17. All 22 players saw game time which is beneficial for next season s contests, with Paul Grey (Forest) judged best on field by his opposition. The coaching staff of Todd Payne, Warren Hodge and Jerry Murphy, led by the experienced John Morrison, had accomplished their task with aplomb. So much so that they were quickly put back in harness to lead the NSW U85kg team to the inaugural world championships in Thailand. In a phenomenal logistical effort the squad, including 16 Suburban players, was brought together from across the state in record time, training just twice before leaving for Thailand. However, they quickly showed they were up to speed with the new U85kg form of the game, winning match after match on their way to the final. In excruciating heat, over 100 minutes of rugby, NSW overcame a more experienced Auckland side in extra time in the final, 14-12, to claim the U85kg title making NSW the only provincial Rugby Union to hold a rugby world championship! The NSW Under 85 kg team celebrate their victory in Phuket. The team included the following players from Suburban Rugby: Andrew Arquilla (Briars), Hamish Bayliss (Knox Old Boys), Kristian Berghofer (Blacktown), Ben Farrow (UNSW), Stewart Graham (Knox Old Boys), Paul Grey (Forest), Jake Havebond (Waverley), Steve Irwin (UNSW), Michael Lamb (Old Ignatians), Aaron Loxley (Campbelltown), Chad Maher (Blacktown), Sam Monaghan (Mosman), Cameron Renilson (St Patricks), Pat Sheehan (Old Ignatians), Andrew Short (Terrey Hills), Kurt Stolzenhein (Campbelltown). - New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union 2005 Annual Report
