This plicy is based n the guidance dcuments Supprting Pupils at Schl with Medical Cnditins September 2017 Mrs Wilsn is the schl Matrn, and if parents, carers r Schl staff wish t discuss any health issues r cncerns regarding a student she can be cntacted n 01923 208900 Ext 206 r by seeing her at the Medical Rm. In Matrn s absence, the designated members f ffice staff referred t in this plicy are Mrs De Lucia and Mrs Sylvester. The Key principals f the plicy are as fllws Students at the Schl wh have a medical cnditin are prperly supprted s that they are able t access all aspects f educatin including PE and educatinal visits. Schl staff, parents / carers, pupils and ther prfessinals are all invlved in ensuring that students medical needs are met and effectively supprted. It is the respnsibility f parents / carers t infrm the schl abut student medical cnditins. Matrn must be infrmed if cnditins change r new medical cnditins arise s that schl recrds can be updated. An Individual Healthcare Plan will be made in cnsultatin with parents / carers and health care prfessinals fr students with medical cnditins such as diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies, severe asthma r any medical cnditins requiring medicatin / treatment at schl. Matrn and parents review the Individual Healthcare Plan yearly and it is updated mre frequently if health needs change. A summary f all students medical cnditins and Individual Healthcare Plans will be prduced fr teaching staff n schl trips. This infrmatin is held in the T drive/ Medical flder. N by is allwed t leave schl if he is unwell r injured unless Matrn has spken t a parent/carer. He must then be cllected by a parent, carer r named delegated adult and signed ut in the main receptin. MEDICINES A list f students n prescriptin and nn-prescriptin drugs issued daily at schl e.g. Ritalin, migraine, allergy and ther specific medicatin tablets can be fund in Sectin 7 n SIMS, n the T: drive \ Medical File and listed under the name f the student in their Individual Healthcare Plan in the Medical Rm. Matrn is respnsible fr maintaining this list. Matrn (r in her absence) designated members f ffice staff can nly administer medicatin t students if it is prvided by a parent / carer in the riginal package, clearly labelled with the student s name, methd f administratin, dse and a letter giving written permissin t d s. Parents will be cntacted, unless specific arrangements are made fr an individual by in line with the Individual Healthcare Plan. All medicatin given in schl is stred in the Medical Rm r at the New Field upn request A recrd f any medicatin administered t students at schl fr emergency r daily use is kept in the Medical Rm with the Individual Healthcare Plans. Parents / Carers are respnsible fr ensuring all student medicatin kept at schl is within date and replaced when expired. Students wh require emergency medicatin t manage their cnditin in schl shuld carry their wn medicatin- e.g. Asthma inhalers, Epipen / Jext kits. If a student is prescribed an Epipen / Jext, he shuld carry ne in his bag and give a secnd ne t Matrn (clearly named) A passprt-size phtgraph is als requested fr bys with an Epipen / Jext. Parents are advised t prvide spare medicatin t be kept in Matrn s ffice at schl, where it is easily accessible in an emergency. Essential emergency prescriptin medicatin fr a cmplex r lng term medical cnditin may be carried by a student during the schl day and where it is essential that the dse must be administered during the schl day. 2

Students are encuraged t manage and be respnsible fr this and Matrn must be made aware f this by parent letter r email. If a student cannt self-manage then Matrn r anther designated member f staff will supervise. Written cnsent frm the parent / carer will be required fr this. Nn-emergency prescriptin medicatin shuld nly be brught int schl if it is essential that the dse must be administered during the schl day. This shuld be handed int Matrn at the start f the schl day and the parent / carer will be cnsulted befre administratin. Nn - prescriptin medicatin shuld nt be brught int schl by students at any time. Ritalin medicatin can nly be issued in line with the Cntrlled Misuse f Drugs Act 1971. It must be stred in a lcked, static cupbard in the Medical Rm. N mre than ne week s supply can be kept fr students. All Ritalin medicatin received must be recrded. Only named staff, Matrn and designated members f ffice staff may have access and each dse administered and any spare medicatin must be recrded and cuntersigned. The Schl des nt keep r issue any medicine fr pain relief unless previusly arranged and prvided by parents fr specific cnditins. Asthma The Schl has an Asthma Emergency Prcedure fr the administratin f a spare schl Asthma inhaler in an emergency fr bys diagnsed with Asthma nly. This can be fund in the Medical Flder n the T drive and shuld be fllwed by all staff. Students wh are nt diagnsed as Asthmatic and develp breathing prblems must NOT be given the Schl Emergency inhaler. Urgent assistance must be arranged by calling an ambulance and the ambulance wrkers will decide if the inhaler r mre urgent attentin / medicatin is required. Asthmatic students at the Schl must carry their wn inhalers always; Matrn will nly keep a spare inhaler fr a student if specifically requested by parents. Emergency Antihistamine Medicatin Matrn keeps a stck f Antihistamine medicatin (PIRITON r CETIRIZINE) which may nly be administered t prevent an EMERGENCY ANAPHYLACTIC ALLERGY REACTION. This can be issued by Matrn r the designated member f ffice staff, Mrs Sylvester, Mrs De Lucia and nly after cnsultatin with any member f the Senir Leadership Team and Parents / Carers. This is in line with the instructins in the Asthma Emergency Prcedure abve and in the Medical Flder n the T drive ILLNESS AND INJURIES The Medical Rm available fr treatment fr students wh feel ill r sustain injuries in schl. Students reprting ill r injured shuld be sent (r if apprpriate accmpanied) t Matrn wh will apply basic First Aid r, if necessary, make arrangements fr a parent r carer t cllect the student. Fr a student with a medical need requiring emergency supprt, teaching r nn teaching staff shuld immediately arrange fr the student t be escrted t Matrn (r in her absence the designated member f ffice staff). If the student cannt be mved then Matrn can be called upn t attend t the student. Where a student is clearly immbile r mving him wuld be dangerus, Matrn and a member f the Senir Leadership Team shuld be ntified and an ambulance will be called. Details f all students wh are unwell, sustain injuries and accidents must always be entered n the Medical Rm Daily Attendance Sheets. The Accident Bk kept by Matrn must be cmpleted if a Student requires Hspital treatment r a member f staff is injured at schl. 3

If a student is unwell and cannt attend schl, then parents are asked t cntact the Schl Receptin as sn as pssible t infrm the Schl that he will nt be able t attend. On the day he returns t schl, he MUST bring in a letter t his Frm Tutr explaining the reasn fr his absence. ANY BOY THAT HAS BEEN VOMITING AND / OR HAS DIARRHOEA MUST BE FREE FROM THIS FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE THEY RETURN TO SCHOOL. Head Injuries If any student hits their head at schl fr whatever reasn, parents r carers will be infrmed. and reminded abut pssible symptms, as listed belw. Headache / Visual Disturbance Dizziness / Cnfusin Vmiting / Lss f balance Lss f cnsciusness When a student suffers a Cncussin related injury during sprting activities, in r ut f schl, the Cncussin Prtcl in the Medical Flder n the T drive will be fllwed. Ambulance and Hspital Prcedure Staff shuld never take students t hspital in their wn car; it is safer t call an Ambulance. A member f staff shuld accmpany a student taken t Hspital by Ambulance. During schl ffice hurs (nrmally 08.30 t 17.00) Matrn r the designated member f ffice staff, (r Receptin) will make all necessary calls fr the ambulance and t infrm parents and carers and the Senir Leadership Team. The designated member f ffice staff will accmpany the student t hspital; depending n the circumstances, parents will be asked t g directly t the hspital r may be asked t cme t the Schl first. When an Ambulance is needed fr a student ut f schl ffice hurs r where the event is ffsite, such as a schl sprting fixture, staff shuld ensure that Parents / Carers and a member f the Schl Leadership Team is infrmed. Where there is dubt abut parents cming t the hspital t assume respnsibility, the member f staff shuld stay at the hspital with the student, r bring him back t schl fr cllectin by parent later. A member f the Schl Leadership Team will be available t assist in these circumstances. Calling an Ambulance Sectin One In nrmal circumstances, Matrn r a member f the Schl ffice staff shuld call an ambulance. In an extreme emergency, hwever, all staff shuld knw hw t call an ambulance. When yu have dialled 999 yu will be asked the fllwing infrmatin: Telephne number: (01923) 208900. Lcatin:, Rickmanswrth Rad, Watfrd, Hertfrdshire, WD18 7JF. Or, The New Field (Pavilin), Cningesby Drive, Watfrd, Hertfrdshire, WD17 3PB. Yur name: Give yur name. Students name: Give name f student and brief descriptin f pupil s symptms. Best lcatin: - Infrm Ambulance Cntrl f the best entrance t the Schl 4

and that the crew will be met and taken t the lcatin f the accident. Sectin Tw In the majrity f situatins within nrmal schl hurs (8:30 17:00) staff shuld call Matrn n Ext 206 r the Frnt Desk n Ext 200 wh will assess the situatin first t see if an ambulance is required. They will als arrange fr smene t meet the ambulance at the relevant entrance and direct the ambulance crew t the emergency lcatin. New Field / Pavilin The abve prcedures shuld be fllwed if an emergency happens at the New Field / Pavilin and staff shuld als infrm the persn in charge f games f the situatin. The schl ffice r Matrn shuld als be infrmed, t advise the Schl abut what has happened. Parents and carers may need t be cntacted, if this has nt already happened. Serius accidents In the event f a serius accident, ensure that an ambulance is called immediately: using the Schl s 'phne system, dial 9 and then 999. Defibrillatr There are three Emergency Defibrillatrs at the Schl / Pavilin. LOCATIONS Phillips Defibrillatr - Grund Flr f the MUSE (by the First Aid Bx and Evacuatin Chair) Physi Lifepak Defibrillatrs 1) Sprts Hall Crridr 2) First Aid Rm at the Pavilin / New Field. Instructins fr Defibrillatrs are with equipment and in the Medical Flder n the T drive, all three Defibrillatrs are checked by Matrn n a weekly basis in term time. First Aid There is a list f staff trained as first aiders in bth the Medical and Health & Safety flders n the T drive, including thse trained t administer first aid in the event f a serius accident. Staff receive regular training as required t maintain their first aid qualificatins. The Schl Safety Officer has respnsibility fr appinted staff qualified t administer first aid and their training, and will liaise with Matrn t ensure that the First Aid Bxes cntain the apprpriate supplies. Where there are deficiencies in the First Aid Bxes, individual departments are respnsible fr restcking them in cnsultatin with Matrn. A list f first aiders amngst staff can be fund in the Health & Safety flder f the T drive. First Aid Bxes Lcatin f First Aid Bxes Bilgy/Chemistry/Physics CDT/Technlgy English Blck/James Theatre /Main Blck/Muse/ Sprts Hall /New Field / Minibuses The minimum cntents f First Aid bxes (as described in DfE publicatin 'Guidance n first aid fr schl 1998) shuld be: a leaflet giving general advice n first aid 20 individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings f assrted sizes 5

2 sterile eye pads 4 individually wrapped triangular bandages 6 safety pins 6 medium sized (ca 12cm x 12cm) individually wrapped sterile un-medicated wund dressings 2 large (ca 18cm x 18cm) individually wrapped sterile un-medicated wuld dressings 2 pairs f dispsable glves Eyewash slutin RIDDOR RIDDOR is the Reprting f Injuries, Diseases and Dangerus Occurrences Regulatins 2013. These regulatins require reprting f specified wrkplace incidents althugh reprtable accidents, dangerus ccurrence r cases f disease are cmparatively rare events in the Schl cmmunity. If a reprtable incident ccurs, it shuld be entered in the Schl s Accident Bk and the Headmaster and Health & Safety fficer must be immediately infrmed by Matrn. Clleagues need t reprt where smene has died r has been injured because f a wrk-related accident. The Schl Safety Officer r Matrn will ensure that where needed, a frmal reprt is immediately filed nline (the frm is available at www.riddr.gv.uk). Matrn will call HSE fr any reprtable injury in cnsultatin with the Headmaster and the Schl Safety Officer. The Accident Bk is kept by Matrn in the Medical Rm. Types f reprtable incidents The death f any persn All deaths t staff and nn-staff, with the exceptin f suicides, must be reprted if they arise frm a wrk-related accident, including an act f physical vilence t a wrker. Specified injuries Specified injuries are (regulatin 4):. fractures, ther than t fingers, thumbs and tes amputatins any injury likely t lead t permanent lss f sight r reductin in sight any crush injury t the head r trs causing damage t the brain r internal rgans serius burns (including scalding) which: cvers mre than 10% f the bdy causes significant damage t the eyes, respiratry system, r ther vital rgans any scalping requiring hspital treatment any lss f cnsciusness caused by head injury r asphyxia any ther injury arising frm wrking in an enclsed space which: leads t hypthermia r heat-induced illness requires resuscitatin r admittance t hspital fr mre than 24 hurs Over-seven-day incapacitatin f a wrker Accidents must be reprted where they result in an emplyee r self-emplyed persn being away frm wrk, r unable t perfrm their nrmal wrk duties, fr mre than seven cnsecutive days as the result f their injury. This seven-day perid des nt include the day f the accident, but des include weekends and rest days. The reprt must be made within 15 days f the accident. Over-three-day incapacitatin Accidents must be recrded, but nt reprted where they result in a wrker being incapacitated fr mre than three cnsecutive days. If yu are an emplyer, wh must keep an accident bk under the Scial Security (Claims and Payments) Regulatins 1979, that recrd will be enugh. 6

Nn-fatal accidents t nn-wrkers (eg members f the public) Accidents t members f the public r thers wh are nt at wrk must be reprted if they result in an injury and the persn is taken directly frm the scene f the accident t hspital fr treatment t that injury. Examinatins and diagnstic tests d nt cnstitute treatment in such circumstances. There is n need t reprt incidents where peple are taken t hspital purely as a precautin when n injury is apparent. Occupatinal diseases Emplyers and self-emplyed peple must reprt diagnses f certain ccupatinal diseases, where these are likely t have been caused r made wrse by their wrk: These diseases include (regulatins 8 and 9): carpal tunnel syndrme; severe cramp f the hand r frearm; ccupatinal dermatitis; hand-arm vibratin syndrme; ccupatinal asthma; tendnitis r tensynvitis f the hand r frearm; any ccupatinal cancer; any disease attributed t an ccupatinal expsure t a bilgical agent. Further guidance n ccupatinal diseases is available nline. Specific guidance is als available nline fr ccupatinal cancers and diseases assciated with bilgical agents Dangerus ccurrences Dangerus ccurrences are certain, specified near-miss events. Nt all such events require reprting. There are 27 categries f dangerus ccurrences that are relevant t mst wrkplaces, fr example: the cllapse, verturning r failure f lad-bearing parts f lifts and lifting equipment; plant r equipment cming int cntact with verhead pwer lines; the accidental release f any substance which culd cause injury t any persn. 7
