The sophomore lefty worked as the Saturday starter for eight weeks before moving into a midweek role. Hensley has earned six quality starts. The 84 stolen bases are the most since 2003, when UNCG swiped 101 during the year. The school record for stolen bases in a single season was set in 1997 at 169, when the Spartan qualified for the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La. That season UNCG played in 62 games, averaging 2.73 stolen bases per game. On the Brink UNCG has had one of the most productive offensive seasons in school history in 2016. Currently, the 2016 Spartans have set records in triples, having hit 30 aleady this year. The previous record was 27, set in 1999. The program record for doubles in a season is at 131, and this year s team has already racked up 126, most in the nation. The Navy and Gold needs just 32 hits to break the team record for hits in a season, 650, set in 1997 when the Spartans reached the NCAA Regionals in Baton Rouge, La. Spartans Sweep SoCon Awards Redshirt Senior L.J. Kalawaia and Freshman Matt Frisbee swept the Pitcher and Player of the Week awards for their efforts April 11-17. Kalawaia was also named to Collegiate Baseball s National Players of the Week. Kalawaia is the second Spartan to receive Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week Honors after Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) took home the award for the week of Mar. 28th-April 4th. Kalawaia hit.600 and slugged 1.150 with 18 RBI in five games on the week, while Frisbee pitched a complete-game shutout as the Spartans went 3-2, splitting a midweek home-andhome with Wake Forest and taking two of three from Furman on the road. Frisbee turned in the first shutout of his career Sunday, allowing just two hits and four walks as the Spartans cruised to the 14-0 win, which finished in seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The freshman, who struck out five and didn t allow an extra-base hit, settled in after issuing all four walks in the first three innings. SoCon Pitcher of the Month Chad Sykes was named SoCon Pitcher of the Month for the month of March. This is the first time the sophomore right-handed pitcher has earned the honor. UNCG finished March with a league-best 14-5 record. Sykes went 2-1 and recorded a save to go with his 2.20 ERA in 10 appearances during the month. The sophomore right-hander allowed only six hits; one for extra bases and nine walks through 16.1 innings, good for a 0.92 WHIP. Sykes allowed just four earned runs on the month, striking out 17 batters. Six of Sykes appearances went at least two innings, starting with a pair of scoreless frames against Coastal Carolina on Mar. 11 to earn his second save of the season. He noted at least one strikeout in each of his last eight appearances and did not allow a hit in his last seven contests. He also posted six straight scoreless outings, earning wins of Marist and Georgetown with two innings of work against each. Overall, Sykes has worked in 23 games, throwing in 38.0 innings. During his time on the hill, Sykes has earned a 2.61 ERA and has held opponents to a.179 average against him. Sykes has struck out 45 hitters on the year., including one in 18 straight appearances. Pitcher of the Week and National Awards Andrew Wantz earned a multitude of honors for his performance the week of Mar. 28th- Apr. 3rd. Wantz was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pitcher of the Week and was one of Collegiate Baseball s seven National Players of the Week. Wantz finished the weekend 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings over three appearances on the week. Striking out 17 batters. Wantz opened the week starting against North Carolina A&T, striking out six and earning the win. In two appearances against VMI, Wantz struck out 11 batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

His 27 appearances leads the team and is 14th in the nation. Early Success 2016 UNCG baseball had one of the best starts in program history with a 20-6 record heading into SoCon play. The 20 wins prior to the conference season is the most-ever for a UNCG squad, and the.769 winning percentage is the highest winning percentage entering conference play since 2003, when the Spartans were 12-0 entering conference. This season, UNCG has earned five series sweeps, while winning ten total series. Those sweeps and series wins don t take into account the Coastal Carolina Invitational in which UNCG defeated Illinois twice, and split a pair of games with the host Chanticleers. With two nonconference games remaining, UNCG has a chance to tie the school-record for nonconference wins in a season with the record being set 1997, with 23 nonconference wins. Spitznagel is second in the NCAA with 82 hits, Kalawaia is 11th with 76. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) is 18th in the nation with 74 hits, but leads the NCAA with 11 sacrifice flies, while placing second in the NCAA with 63 RBI. Kalawaia ranks ninth in the NCAA with 58 RBI, as well as leading UNCG with 22 stolen bases. Four different players rank in the top 20 in runs scored this year. Johnny Bench Watch List UNCG catcher Jake Kusz was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List earlier this season. The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced the official watch list on March 8th. The watch list will be narrowed down on May 18th before the final vote occurs during the College World Series. 75 players were named to the list, four of which play for SoCon teams. This season, Kusz has hit for a.277 average, with 13 doubles and seven home runs. The junior catcher has driven in 42 runs on the year. Defensively, Kusz has allowed just six passed balls this season, while being able to catch eight runners attempting to steal bases. Kusz has made only two errors this season, and has a team-best.995 fielding percentage for players with over 100 chances. Oh Captain, My Captain Head Coach Link Jarrett announced the captains of the 2016 UNCG Baseball team prior to the start of the season. L.J. Kalawaia, Collin Woody, Hunter Smith and Jake Kusz have earned the right to be called captain this season. The four receive this honor after a vote conducted of the UNCG baseball team. Kalawaia and Woody are each seniors, while Smith and Kusz are juniors. Kalawaia received a redshirt after suffering a preseason injury in 2015. Smith is a redshirt junior, having sat out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
