From the President The DCHDC is more than an organization established to preserve our unique style of dance. We are a social group who enjoys each other s friendship at various and many events while still dancing. Thank you to everyone for your support and offers of help in the future, we are going to need it! Your Board of Directors is working on many exciting events for the coming year. We had our Halloween Costume Dance with prizes for the best costume. We look forward to our Toys for Tots Dance, our Christmas Dinner Dance, and the New Year's Eve Gala. We are returning to the DoubleTree Hotel for New Year s Eve where we have a large hospitality/reception area so everyone can gather for free drinks, hors d oeuvres and great conversation! MMATB 2016 will have a Vegas Theme, with the return of the "coin toss" plus more games, dance classes and all around fun and a Vegas Jack Pot! The possible return of the Fall Fling is being explored in addition to other surprise events. Your Board of Directors is continuing to work hard on the business of the club while trying not to forget that we are all here to dance, enjoy each other's company and to have FUN! Popp 12-28 Warren Rye 12-30 Gene M. Sandros 12-30 Spotlight on the DC Hand Dance Club by Jim Chappelear I hope that the club membership will indulge me this month by expressing a few thoughts about our club. When Cristina, Andy and I joined the club several years back, we had no idea that we would forge such long-lasting and loving relationships with members who have become family. When we first joined the club, we only knew one member. That member was Louise Pyles. That was due to the fact that Andy had joined the Starlighters and loved the dance. Cristina was the one in the family who carried Andy to his dance activities and all of the other activities with our other now grown children. Since I was in a profession for so many years where I was not at home to do these duties. As a military and then later airline pilot, I was frequently on the road and not at home. Like many of us, I had taken a long sabbatical from dancing due to the trials and tribulations of simply working a career and raising a family. Paying the bills, helping with homework and science fair projects had simply taken over. I did not have a clue what the DC hand dance was. I was a Carolina boy and down there the dance is the Shag! Cristina came home from one of Andy s classes at Louise s home telling me that Louise was beginning a new class for hand dance beginners and that she had already paid for two to attend the next session. Cristina looked at me with a serious glare and told me that she was attending the class while leaving me the avenue to either attend or not to attend. I reluctantly decided to attend. It was one of the best decisions that I have made in our forty five year marriage. I attended the classes which was comprised of five or six couples. Did not know any of them but we had the best of times and I was hooked on this new hand dancing thing! We started attending the Sunday afternoon dances at the 94 Squadron Hat in the Ring Restaurant in College Park. Not knowing anyone at our first Sunday afternoon, we were greeted and welcomed to the gathering by a litany of new friends. It was great to meet new friends from all walks of life, professions and local communities. Some of the first friends that we met were Mike and Joyce Chucci and Tommy and Sally Dickerson. Both couples are so typical of the wonderful people that we have met through our hand dance club. Our club is a true blessing to all of us! Last month I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Jimmy and Carolyn Remington for this very Spotlight article. While I had seen them at some of the club s events over the last few years, I had not met them in a true sense where I could call them my friends. Angie Roberts introduced me to them. That changed when I had the opportunity to speak with them about their careers, their families and the other significant events in their lives. After writing the Spotlight, I felt that I had known them for many years and they were truly my new friends. Life changes at the blink of any eye! Now both Tommy, Mike and Jimmy have left us to be with our Heavenly Father. In our hearts there is a big void but we are all blessed to have been able to call them friends and to enjoy their company on this earth. Our time here is limited and we are very fortunate to have our DC Hand Dance Club where we can meet new friends, enjoy the company of old friends, enjoy the music of our youth and to dance a little at our gatherings. Our club is a club of hearts and love. My life has been truly enriched by simply being a member. Make the best of our time here and thank the good Lord for our dance club and those that keep it together. Wishing all members blue skies and a trailing tail wind, Jim.
