TONIGHT'S STORYLINES l The White Sox are a season-high 22 games under.500 they have lost 14 of their last 18 games in Cleveland. l Dylan Covey ranks third in the American League with a 1.00 (2 ER/18.0 IP) in June, including a streak of 18.0 consecutive IP without allowing an earned run to open the month. l The Sox bullpen owns a 1.24 (5 ER/36.1 IP) over the last 12 games and a 2.40 mark (29 ER/108.2 IP) over the last 34 (since 5/13). l Chicago is holding opponents to a.133 (12-90) average with RISP over the last 10 games. l C Kevan Smith has hit safely in all nine games since being recalled on 6/5, going 15-34 (.441) with six multihit efforts. YESTERDAY'S RECAP l Detroit completed its second consecutive three-game sweep of the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field with a 3-1 victory over the White Sox. l James Shields (3 ER/6.0 IP) suffered the loss despite making the eighth quality start in his last 10 outings Shields has thrown at least 6.0 IP in 11 straight starts, his longest streak since 9/9/15-5/25/16 when he went 13 in a row. l Luis Avilán (0.2 IP), Chris Volstad (1.1) and Héctor Santiago (1.0) combined for 3.0 scoreless IP in relief. l The Sox outhit the Tigers, 9-6, but left eight runners on base Matt Davidson hit his first home run since 5/13 at the Cubs, a solo shot off Blaine Hardy, and Tim Anderson, Kevan Smith and Daniel Palka collected two hits apiece. l The White Sox fell to 1-8 against Detroit, their worst start in the series since 1988 (also 1-8). PROGRAMMING NOTES l ESPN will carry the White Sox game at Cincinnati on 7/4 NBC Sports Chicago still will carry the game as originally scheduled beginning at 6:10 p.m. CT. CWS AT THE CWS l White Sox draft choices INF Nick Madrigal (first round, Oregon State), LHP Konnor Pilkington (third round, Mississippi State) and RHP Davis Martin (14th round, Texas Tech) have helped their teams reach the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. l Oregon State was scheduled to play Washington today at 1:00 p.m. CT in an elimination game. l Mississippi State plays North Carolina tonight at 6:00 p.m. CT in the double elimination round, with Pilkington scheduled to start. l Texas Tech will play Arkansas tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. CT in the double elimination round after defeating Florida last night, 6-3 (Martin did not pitch). SOX SERVE WEEK RECAP l The 10th annual Sox Serve Week concluded on Saturday, raising $153,792 for White Sox Charities since its inception, Sox Serve Week has raised more than $1.7 million. ON THE FARM l Avisaíl García, who has been on the disabled list since 4/24 with a strained right hamstring, is hitting.353 (6-17) with three doubles, a home run and six RBI in five rehab games with Class AAA Charlotte. l Leury García, who has been on the disabled list since 5/24 with a sprained left knee, is 3-7 with a double and three runs scored in two rehab games with Charlotte. l OF Luis Robert, the No. 24 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, is 5-8 with two walks, three runs scored and three stolen bases in his last three games with Class A Kannapolis. NO FREE PASSES l White Sox starting pitchers are averaging 2.23 walks per 9.0 IP (9 BB/36.1 IP) over the last six games (4.63 in first 64) they have not issued a walk in three of the last six games, compared to four times in the first 64. WHITE SOX VS. CLEVELAND INDIANS l The Indians lead the season series, 5-2 the teams play seven games in 10 days from 6/11-20. l The White Sox are batting.204/.266/.366 (44-216) with a 4.65 (31 ER/60.0 IP) and have been outscored, 37-20. l The Sox have lost four straight games and six of the last seven at Progressive Field. l The White Sox lead the all-time series, 1,082-1,065 they are 571-501 at home (114-113 at Guaranteed Rate Field) and 511-564 on the road (96-107 at Progressive Field). WHITE SOX-TRIBE TIDBITS l Former White Sox owner Bill Veeck (1959-61, '76-80) owned the Cleveland Indians from 1946-49. l Jim Thome, who will be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in July, played for Cleveland (1991-2002, '11) and Chicago (2006-09) Thome currently serves as a special assistant to White Sox general manager Rick Hahn. l Omar Vizquel, who manages Class A Winston-Salem, played with the Indians (1994-2004) and Sox (2010-11). l Indians first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. (2001-04, '06) played for the White Sox. LOOKING FOR CENTRAL COMMAND l The White Sox are 11-21 against the American League Central in 2018, going 3-11 at home and 8-10 on the road. l The Sox are 302-398 vs. the AL Central since 2009, posting a losing record every season except 2012 (37-35). BULLPEN RELIEF l The White Sox bullpen has recorded a 2.08 (12 ER/52.0 IP) in June, the third-best mark in the major leagues, including a 1.24 mark (5 ER/36.1 IP) over the last 12 games. l Joakim Soria owns a 0.00 (11.2 IP) over his last 12 appearances, converting all six save chances with five hits allowed, two walks and 13 strikeouts. QUALITY AND QUANTITY l The White Sox have made a major-league leading 1,345 quality starts since the start of the 2003 season, three more than the second-place New York Mets (1,341) and 45 more than Oakland (1,300), the next-closest American League team. DOUBLE VISION l José Abreu ranks second in the major leagues with 26 doubles, including 21 in his last 38 games (since 5/8) Abreu is on pace to hit 60 doubles this season, which would be the most in the major leagues since Colorado's Todd Helton (59) in 2000. l Abreu, who hit a career-high 43 doubles in 2017, needed just 62 games this season to reach 25, which tied Bibb Falk (25 in 1926) for the fewest in Sox history to reach that milestone. PITO FIRST AT FIRST l José Abreu leads all American League first basemen in fan balloting for the 2018 MLB All-Star Game Abreu is the first White Sox player to lead at any point in the balloting process since Frank Thomas won the fan election at first base in 1996. l Abreu would be the sixth Sox player (11th time) to be fan-elected as a starter to the All-Star Team, joining Thomas (1994-96), Carlton Fisk (1981-82), Richie Zisk (1977), Dick Allen (1972-74) and Luis Aparicio (1970). BIG GAME JAMES l James Shields has made eight quality starts in his last 10 outings and has thrown at least 7.0 IP in five of his last seven. l Shields is allowing 1.04 home runs per 9.0 IP in 2018, down from 2.08 in 2017, and has lowered his opponents average from.253 to.232. l He reached the 40,000-pitch milestone on 5/27 at Detroit (postseason included) and 2,500.0 career IP on 6/1 vs. Cleveland Shields ranks 69th all-time with 2,144 strikeouts. STOP! THIEF! l The White Sox rank second in the major leagues with 57 stolen bases this season the Sox are on pace to steal 132, which would be 16 less than their combined total of 148 from 2016-17 they have not led the majors in steals since 1966 (153). TRIPLE THE FUN l The White Sox are tied for third in the major leagues this season with 21 triples the Sox led the AL with 37 triples last season, their most since 1999 (also 37). l Yolmer Sánchez leads the majors with eight triples in 2018 after ranking sixth last season with eight.
