CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2008 A Word From Your President Hi Everybody, I just wanted to to let you know that the Alumni Outing is coming up. Contact me to sign up. Also, I have a new address. It is 2309-F Terra Stone Ct., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. So, send your checks for the outing, made out to Triad ASGA, to me there. Also, we have the election coming up for new officers for 2009. If you re interested, let me know. My time as president of this fine group comes to an end in December. Let s play lots of golf as the weather is great now. See you soon, ~Robin September Meeting Recap Only seven members showed up for the September meeting. We hope this was a fluke and that attendance will be back to normal levels in October. Carole Olsen did have the signup sheet for the September 20 th Holly Ridge outing. Everyone should try to attend the October 13 chapter meeting. Plans for the New Year s beach trip will be discussed, along with the plans for the election of 2009 officers. Pilot Knob Results Our first outing to Pilot Knob Park Country Club on September 6 was a success. Despite Hurricane Hanna coming through Friday night, by Saturday afternoon the weather was dry, warm, and sunny. The course was in great shape and the 13 players who attended had a great time. As a sure sign that summer is ending and fall is near, Karen Vaughn played with us for the first time since spring. We were also joined by a new player Linda Sheets a friend of Karen s who is also a member at the Pilot Knob club. Let s hope she enjoyed herself and will consider joining ASGA. In an effort to speed up play since we were teeing off in a 3:00 PM shotgun start, the game for the day was a Shambles event. Also, we played from shorter tees than normal. It apparently worked, because we finished the round in less than 4 hours. Prizes were awarded based on each team s best ball net score on each hole and for each team s best ball gross score on each hole. There were also men s and women s closest-to-the-pin prizes. The hot team for the day was Ken Mabe, Karen Vaughn, Steve Mot- singer, and Linda Sheets. They actually had the best total gross best ball score (67) and the best total net best ball score (51). Their gross score was 3 strokes under par! Steve and Linda even won the closest-to-the-pin prizes. Fortunately for the other players, the organizers had decided not to let one team win both the gross and net prizes, so the Mabe-Vaughn-Motsinger-Sheets team was awarded the prize for low gross. The team of Eddie Sparks, Frank Dorn, and Rita Davis had the next best low net score (54) and was awarded the low net prize. As for the other two teams, they were close, but not quite good enough. The team of Jim Runyan, Helen Godwin, and Carol Brooks had a gross score of 81 and a net score of 56. The team of Kevin Chrestman, Curtis Jones, and Landon Wood had a gross score of 81 and a net score of 61. After the golf, most players stayed to partake of the Member s Saturday night buffet at the clubhouse. Oak Hollow Let s Try Again Our original plans for an outing to Oak Hollow Golf Course (www.oakhollowgc.com) were rained out in April. So, we re going to give it one more try. Our last scheduled outing for 2008 will be at Oak Hollow Golf Course in High Point on November 15. Helen Godwin will again be the hostess for the outing. The tee times start at 12:00 noon and the outing cost is just $31. That s a better deal than April when the cost was $34. Contact Helen by November 8 to sign up if you want to play. November Newsletter Articles Please submit any articles or information you want to appear in the November newsletter to Curtis Jones by October 20. Rules and More Rules Hapless Larry managed to get in another golf predicament. On his approach to the green, he thought he would cut the corner with his "famous" draw shot. Yes, I saw it work a couple of times this year. But, not this time. As he frequently does, he struck a tree. Usually it is a 50/50 on if the ball will bounce into the fairway or stay in the pine straw under the trees. In this case, it was neither. It appeared the ball stuck in the tree. What is the correct ruling/requirement?

1. Play ball as it lies. Larry could climb the tree taking a club with him or having me pass it to him and then after verifying that it was his ball, he could take a swing at it. 2. Declare a lost ball. Even if Larry sees a ball is in the tree, if he can not shake it lose to check the ball or otherwise positively see his logo or other identifying mark on the ball, he must declare a lost ball. The penalty is stroke and distance. Larry must take a one stoke penalty and return to the spot of the previous stroke. 3. Assuming Larry can verify the ball in the tree is his ball, he could declare the Drop the ball within two club lengths of a point directly under where the ball was in the tree, but not nearer the hole. 4. Assuming Larry can verify the ball in the tree is his ball, he could declare the Play his next ball as nearly as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played 5. Assuming Larry can verify the ball in the tree is his ball, He could declare the Drop a ball behind the point directly under where the ball was in the tree, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped And the answer is... The answer is 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all correct. In reality there are 3 options. Option 1: Play ball as it lies, pretty simple from a rules perspective, but not so easy for the typical golfer to execute. Option 2: Declare a lost ball. Again this is pretty straight forward, even if you can see a ball in the tree, if you can not shake it lose to verify that it is your ball, or if you can not climb the tree or otherwise positively verify that the ball seen is yours, you must proceed under the lost ball rule which is stroke and distance. Option 3: Declare the ball unplayable. Note, you must be able to positively confirm that the ball you see in the tree is yours. You can do this by shaking the tree, throwing your club at the ball, climbing the tree, etc. to get a look at the ball. Before you try to get at or dislodge the ball, announce that you intend to treat the ball as unplayable. If you move the ball without declaring your intent to continue under the unplayable rule, you will get a penalty stroke under the Ball at Rest Moved ruling and would be required to put the ball back in the tree! Failure to replace a ball moved results in an additional 1-stroke penalty. You must make sure you identify your ball before continuing under the unplayable option rule, and you must announce your intentions before retrieving or dislodging the ball from the tree. Option 3, the declare your ball unplayable option has three drop possibilities. All of them require a one stroke penalty. But with an unplayable ball, you may 1. Drop the ball within two club lengths of the balls position (in this case within two club lengths of the spot directly under where the ball was lodged in the tree). 2. Drop a ball behind the balls position (in this case directly under where the ball was in the tree), keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped. 3. Play the next ball as nearly as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Susan Fullam - 10/28 Penny Gettings - 10/26 Yi Lin - 11/05 Jean Rinehold - 11/05 Barbara Shoemaker - 11/05 Donna Smart - 10/19 Mary Anne Utley - 10/05 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Frank Dorn - 10/31/2008 Welcome newest members: Chris Whitaker - Joined 08/08/2008 These members recently renewed: Jeanne Ann Hayes Delbert (Del) Louder Gregory Vares These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Randy Hall - 08/31/2008 Emily Williams - 08/31/2008 Our chapter currently has 45 members.
