Dawson County 4-H Newsletter Dear 4-H Families, Summer is quickly approaching, which means camps, clinics and other activities. Make sure you are checking your emails for information on everything going on. Deadlines are very important dates to remember so make sure you are marking them on your calendar. Just a reminder that June 1 is the deadline for adding/dropping projects. It is your responsibility to make sure you know which projects you are enrolled in. If you have any questions on that please call the office. Enjoy your last month of school. County Ambassador Applications Due, May 25 A 4 H Ambassador is a self motivated, enthusiastic leader who promotes 4 H using the skill, knowledge and leadership abilities acquired in 4 H with fellow members, area residents, community leaders, elected officials and non 4 H youth. A 4 H Ambassador serves to strengthen the 4 H program through public relations. Montana 4 H Ambassador Qualifications: Must be 14 years of age by October 1 of current year. Must have been enrolled in 4 H for at least 2 years and must be enrolled in 4 H for the current year. Must be or have been a Junior Leader or a Club Officer. Must have an enthusiastic desire to serve and accept the responsibilities outlined in the Constitution and Handbook. If you are interested in being a County Ambassador please contact the office for an application and return before May 25. June 1, PIG GOAT & LAMB WEIGH IN, Fairgrounds 4:00-6:00 pm Weigh in for your market lamb and market pig project will be held Wednesday, May 31 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the fairgrounds. The livestock policy states that all market animals must be weighed in and identified, at a central location on a designated day if they are to be in the rate of gain contest. If the animals are not weighed on the same scale, on the same day, the animal cannot be considered for the rate of gain contest, they can however be exhibited at the fair, but will not participate in this contest. ADD\DROP PROJECTS, JUNE 1 June 1 is the last day to add or drop projects. If you have not completed anything in a project, you may want to drop it for this year and consider taking it again another time. June 1 is also the day you must own your market lamb or market pig, goats, orphans, and all small animals (Cat, dog, rabbit, poultry, etc.) If you did not get an animal by this date, call the office and drop it off your list of projects. No animal can be shown at the fair unless it is owned by June 1. Dog & Cat Members Remember to turn in your vaccination forms to the Extension Office by June 14 or you will not be allowed to exhibit at the fair. Even if you did this last year, you will need to provide me with updated records for this year.
4-H Shooting Sports Camp, May 18-19 Activities include air rifle, archery, shotgun, fishing and boating. A parent or guardian must accompany the 4-H er. Held at Loon Lake. Registration is due May 10. 4-H Cloverbud Camp, June 8-10 Cloverbud Camp will be held at the Darrell Fenner 4-H Camp in Loon Lake. Any Cloverbud wishing to attend must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is due by June 1. 4-H Camp Needmore, June 12-14 Applications for Camp Needmore are due to the Extension Office by May 4. Any 4-H member in 3 rd - 6 th grade for the current school year are eligible to attend Camp Needmore. This year s theme is 4-H is a Hoot. 4-H Oreo Trip Livingston/Gardiner Area, June 26-28 Applications for the Oreo Trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota are due to the Extension office by April 30th. Any 4-H member in 7 th & 8 th grade for the current school year are eligible to attend this trip. 4-H CONGRESS, July 10-13 4-H Congress applications are due by June 1. The applications may be picked up at the Extension Office, or available on the County 4-H web page. Per the Dawson County 4-H Policy, youth must be at least 14 years old as of October 1 of the current 4-H year and chaperons must be certified 4-H Volunteers or MSU Extension staff and at least 21 years of age.
4-H Goat Boot Camp, May 12 The Cascade County 4-H Livestock Leaders are hosting a 4-H Goat Boot Camp. The camp will be on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Leardini s at 50 Whitetail Lane in Ulm, MT. The boot camp will start at 10:00 a.m. and will feature clinicians Perry and Courtney Frank from Standing on the Rock Boer Goats out of Missoula. They will answer all of your goat questions from feeding, marketing, fitting, showing, and other topics. 4-H members are encouraged to bring their goats, fitting stands, and clippers to the boot camp. If you just have a goat, that s ok! Bring your goat and yourself along. A goat lunch will be provided at noon. Registration Forms are available at the Extension Office and due by May 9. Kirk Stierwalt Fitting Clinic, June 8-10 You will learn techniques and tricks on clipping, hoof trimming, show day dressing and showmanship. Registration forms can be picked up at the Extension Office or by contacting Jessica Stroh at (406) 941-0670 or strohcattle@midrivers.com CARBON COUNTY DOG PROGRAM, JUNE 9-10 The Carbon County 4-H Dog Leaders are hosting a practice show, Get Your Bark On, for all 4-H Dog members in Red Lodge on June 9 & 10. This will be a fun way to practice and prepare for fair as well as win some neat prizes! Classes include showmanship, obedience, and rally. Information about the show & registration as well as the Carbon County 4-H Dog packet that outlines each class and the rules for the show available at the Extension Office. Registration Due May 15. 7 Miles Hampshires Lamb Camp, June 23-24 Registration forms can be picked up at the Extension Office or by contacting Leanne Hoagland at (406) 939-1263 or bsshires@midrivers.com Western Ranch Fitting Camp and Jackpot Show, June 22-24 Located at the Metra Park in Billings and open to all 4-H ers age 9-18. Registration forms available at westernranchsupply.com.

Air Fifle meets the 2nd & 4th Fridays of the month @ 6:00 at the Trails End Rifle and Pistol Club.
