A Message from the Principal On Thursday I sent an e-mail to all HMS families with a link to a survey from the Hurley School Council. I encourage you to participate in this survey. In our efforts to enhance communication between Hurley Middle School and home, we are surveying our students, parents and teachers. This is the parent survey. Please take a few moments to answer just 10 questions that will provide us insight. Simply click on the link below to begin. I am appealing; on behalf of the PTO to grade 6 and 7 parents to assist with the end of the year field days. Grade 7 will be held on Monday, June 20th and grade 6 will be held on Tuesday, June 21st both days are weather permitting. We need parents to set up and supervise the activities. You would have to be here at 11:30 to 2:30 and have a current CORI on file with us.. We are in need of 9 or 10 parents each day, so please consider joining us. If you can help out with one of the Field Days please contact Justine Noelte at noelte23@comcast.net. Dr. Joan C. Fargnoli Principal School budget suggestions needed to Save our Schools At the last budget workshop the school committee decided to have a link placed on the district web site so that the public can provide input on the school budget. Please go to the site @: http://seekonk.sharpschool.com/ and express your suggestions and concerns. PTO News School Store- The Spring Apparel Sale has been extended to next Friday, June 3rd. Check the PTO page on the website next week for pictures of the items included in the sale. There are samples of the shirts in all sizes offered in the HMS office, so if you re not sure which size to order, stop by and have a look at the samples. If you have any questions please contact Jen Hess at 399-8855 or jbhess@att.net. The school store is open every Wednesday, and occasionally on Tuesdays. If there is something you wish to purchase on a day the store is closed, please contact us (Jen Hess-399-8855) and we can arrange to have the items available for pickup in the HMS office. JAZZ BAND STUDENTS have a MANDATORY rehearsal on Thursday 6/1 at 7:00 AM in the band room. There will be no jazz rehearsal during the HMS Band Festival, June 9th! ALL PERMISSIONS SLIPS FOR THE BAND FIELD TRIP TO THE SEEKONK SWIM CLUB MUST BE IN BY JUNE 1ST. STUDENTS NOT RETURNING SLIPS BY THE JUNE 1ST DEADLINE WILL BE UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE. GET YOURS IN TODAY!!!!!! The HSM Band Parent group has decided to have the band students wear their HMS BAND T- SHIRTS for the concert on Thursday June 9. This concert will NOT feature the normal black and white. Students may wear shorts and the t-shirt as it will be warm. HMS BAND FESTIVAL Wednesay, June 8th- professional clinicians will be here to work with your children Thursday, June 9th- guest conductor will work with all bands*** CONCERT THAT EVENING...6:00, 7:00, 8:00 Friday, June 10th- bands perform for the school and Seekonk Swim Club for lunch and activities! (Students may arrive at 6:30 for pictures) Party will be held in the school cafeteria, enter at the front of school Admission Free (PTO sponsored) Dress Boys shorts/pants & polo shirt or pants/shorts with shirt & =e (in accordance with school dress code) =es are op=onal Girls dress, sun dress or skirt/pants/shorts & dress blouse (in accordance with school dress code) Please encourage all students to aeend this special night with their classmates! Photo package prices will be sent home in advance of the dance. Photos will be available for pick up at the school office approximately 2 weeks following the dance. Students will be picked up from the back of the school (tower lobby exit) at the end of the dance at 9:00 pm. Students must return signed permission slip by June 10 th to the main office in order to aeend the party. Also, we ask asking for a donahon of baked goods for the party. All items should be delivered to the school on Friday, June 17 th prior to the start of the party. Please indicate on the permission slip if you can donate an item. Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School Spring Band Concert Thursday, June 9, 2011 Dear Parents: I am pleased to announce the 2011 Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School Spring Band Concert Schedule. All three concerts will be held in our middle school gym on Thursday, June 9th. The schedule is as follows: 6:00 P.M. - Pegasus Band 7:00 P.M. - Percussion Ensemble Intermezzo Band 8:00 P.M. - HMS Jazz Concert Band The 6 th grade Pegasus band should arrive no later than 5:30 P.M. and report to the BAND ROOM for warm up and tuning. After completing the performance, students will return their instruments to the band room. All students are invited to stay for the remainder of the concert. The 7 th grade Intermezzo band should arrive no later than 6:30 P.M. Students are to pick up their instruments in the band room and report to the CAFETERIA for warm up and tuning. After completing their performance, students will return their instruments to the band room. All students are invited to stay for the remainder of the concert. The 8 th grade HMS Concert Band should arrive no later than 7:30 P.M. and report to the BAND ROOM for warm up and tuning. Students will wear HMS Band T-SHIRT (coming soon as a gift from the band parent association) and shorts, either black or tan for their performance. Multiple Sclerosis 150 Mile Bike Tour Vanessa and Brie Noelte (older sisters of middle schooler Leah Noelte) are students at the high school and will be participating in the Multiple Sclerosis 150 Mile Bike Tour. They are looking to make a difference in the lives of those with MS. They hope to collect as many donations as possible that will benefit this cause. Vanessa is assistant teaching a yoga class at the Newman YMCA on Sunday, May 29 @ 10am. Everyone young and old is welcome to come do free yoga! No membership to the YMCA is required but students need to fill out a permission slip, in order to attend, which can be found in the main office. Donations are greatly appreciated and will be going to the RI Multiple Sclerosis Society. If you can not attend the yoga class please visit www.bikemsrhodeisland.org to make a donation in their name to assist in the fundraising efforts! You can also contribute to the cause by riding with them! They have created a team named the Rhode Warriors. The team is open to anyone interested in riding. Summer Camp AT TRI COUNTY RVTHS August 8 12, 2O11 8:00 am 12:00 pm / 12:30 pm 4:30 pm Thinking of a way to enrich learning for your child this summer while they are having fun? Tri County is offering an expanded summer camp to explore careers and exercise the mind and body. Programs will provide opportunities for hands on, interactive exploration. Enrollment in each program is limited by space and grade (7&8 only). Cost: 1 camp $2OO.OO 2 camps $35O.OO Camp Descriptions auto collision (8am 12pm) Bring your passion for working on cars to this camp. You will create a vanity plate while learning how the experts overhaul a car s exterior into a fancy ride. beginning carpentry (8am 12pm) Use hand and power tools to design and craft a wooden sign to take home. Use professional machinery and learn construction skills in a real wood shop. beginning plumbing (12:3Opm 4:3Opm) Use tools of the trade to create a take-home project made from copper fittings and tubing. Campers will become familiar with plumbing technology using hands-on problem solving skills. cosmetology (8am 12pm) All aspects of the beauty industry will be explored as campers participate in activities related to hair, nail and skin care. cybercamp (8am 12pm) Technology is the focus of this camp as participants create a website, build a computer, build a network, and learn the basics of robotics using Legos. electrical (8am 12pm) Campers will learn how electricity works by participating in hands on activities, including how to make a magnet, and how to wire buzzers, lights, motors and switches. Each camper will design and wire a lamp to bring home at the end of the week. engineering (12:3Opm 4:3Opm) Back by popular demand, campers will experience the many concepts of engineering in a stimulating, entertaining environment that couples learning with competitions. After receipt of this form with payment, the Vocational Director s Office will send you a complete package of information for your review, with additional forms that must be completed and returned.
