NEW COACH, IMPRESSIVE RESUME John Olenowski was named the seventh head coach in program history on April 5, 9. A 978 graduate of Saint Leo College, Olenowski guided Morris Catholic High School in Denville, N.J., to a 33-39 record and three state championships in seasons as head coach. From 98-85, he was the head coach at Pace University for three seasons. Olenowski compiled a 7-8 record at Pace, including a 8-3 mark and the NCAA Division II East Regional title in 98-85. With his season opening victory over St. Francis (NY), Olenowski became the third coach in program history to win his Manhattan debut. ANOTHER NEW FACE Manhattan has another new face on the sidelines in assistant coach Kristen Piscadlo. Piscadlo joined the Manhattan staff after two seasons as an assistant at Brown. A 6 graduate of Muhlenberg College, she is the Mules all-time leader in assists and was named First Team All-Centennial Conference in 5. PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY New Manhattan Head Coach John Olenowski has brought a new philosophy with him to Riverdale. In his office, Olenowski keeps a copy of the Notre Dame football team s famous Play Like a Champion sign that is autographed by Fighting Irish Head Coach Charlie Weis. He had the slogan printed on a Jasper green sign that now hangs in the Manhattan locker room. Olenowski also takes inspiration from famed North Carolina Head Coach Dean Smith, and has also adopted Smith s philosophy, Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together. This motto, too, is now on a sign in the Manhattan locker room, as well as the team s warmup t-shirts, with one minor change. To emphasize the team first, Olenowski switched the order to Play Hard, Play Together, Play Smart. A third new sign in the Lady Jaspers locker room stresses the team goals for the 9- season, Have Passion, Strive for Excellence, Play with Poise. THREE FOR ALYSSA After leading the MAAC with.5 three-pointers per game last season, sophomore guard Alyssa Herrington has picked up right where she left off in 9-. Herrington sank a pair of three-pointers in the opener against St. Francis (NY), then drained six treys and finished with a career-high points in Manhattan s loss to Virginia on Nov. 5. Herrington is averaging.8 points and a MAAC-leading 3.8 three-pointers per game, while shooting.69 (5-of-3) from beyond the arc so far this season. LOUTS AND LOUTS OF REBOUNDS Sophomore forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer led the Lady Jaspers in rebounds times during the 8-9 season, and averaged 6. boards per contest last year. Manhattan s top returning rebounder, she currently leads this season s Lady Jaspers with 6.8 rebounds per game. Loutsenhizer has led Manhattan in rebounding in three of the first four games, including a nine-rebound effort against Columbia.

Forwards Nadia Peters (6-) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (6-) are also listed at 6- or taller. Guards Ondya Morgan and Laura Rivera are the shortest members of the team, both standing 5-6. YOUTH MOVEMENT Manhattan is one of the youngest teams in the nation this season. The Lady Jaspers have just one senior (Michelle Pacheco) and only two juniors (Alicia Marculitis and Abby Wentworth) on the squad. MEET THE NEWBIES The four freshmen on the Manhattan roster each bring impressive credentials with them to Riverdale. Maggie Blair was named New York State Class B MVP after leading Briarcliff High School in Briarcliff, N.Y., to the 8 state championship, while Karita Brown is the all-time leader in blocked shots at Park View High School in Sterling, Va. Toni-Ann Lawrence was an all-county selection at Elmont High School in Elmont, N.Y., and Ondya Morgan won Second Team All-Union County honors twice at Linden High School in New Brunswick, N.J. TWO MORE GOING GREEN Manhattan signed a pair of players to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA s early signing period. Brandone Roberts, a 6-3 center from Jessup, Md., and Monica Roeder, a 6- guard/forward from Marlton, N.J., will join the Lady Jaspers for the - season.

SCHEDULE CHANGE Thanks to a change in the MAAC s scheduling format, the Lady Jaspers don t play a conference game until January. This marks the first time since 998-99 that Manhattan doesn t open its MAAC schedule until the New Year. The 998-99 campaign was also the last time the Lady Jaspers played all of their non-conference games without interruption to start the season, then finished the regular season by playing 8 straight MAAC games. NO JETLAG Even though Manhattan plays five non-conference road games, the Lady Jaspers will spend just two nights in a hotel prior to their MAAC road trip to Niagara and Canisius in January. Manhattan made an overnight trip to Virginia and will make another to Vermont, while Army is also within a two-hour bus ride of the Riverdale campus. The Lady Jaspers traveled just nine miles to play Columbia, and made a 5-mile trip for this afternoon s contest. Keeping with the local theme, the Lady Jaspers also play home games against Hofstra and Fordham during the non-conference season. MAAC PRESEASON POLL The Lady Jaspers were chosen to finish ninth in the MAAC s annual preseason coaches poll. Four-time defending conference Marist was the unanimous pick to repeat, followed by Iona and Canisius. Rider was fourth in the poll, then came Fairfield, Loyola and Siena. After the Lady Jaspers, Niagara was tabbed to finish th. HEADING BACK TO ALBANY The Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championships will be held at the Times Union Center in Albany from March -7. This marks the third consecutive season, and the 3th time since 99, that the postseason conference tournament will be held at the Times Union Center. EARLY BIRDS The season opener against St. Francis (NY) was one of only night games on Manhattan s 9- schedule. The Lady Jaspers play 8 of their 9 games during the day (tip-off before 6 p.m.), including a

In an effort to increase student involvement at basketball games and give the Jaspers more of a homecourt advantage, the Manhattan Athletic Department and student government worked closely together to develop the Jasper Jungle. Students were given Jasper Jungle t-shirts and are encouraged to sit in the designated Jasper Jungle section of the stands across from the visitors bench. The t-shirts were handed out at the Manhattan Madness pep rally held the night before the first game. WHAT S A JASPER? Manhattan has the only athletic program in Division I with the nickname Jaspers. The unique nickname came from one of Manhattan s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C. Brother Jasper served the College in the late 8s and served as the first coach of Manhattan s baseball team. He is credited as the creator of the seventh-inning stretch, which has become a time-honored tradition at ballparks across the country. During a game in the 88s, Brother Jasper noticed students getting restless in the middle of the seventh inning of a close game, so he called timeout and told the students to stand up a stretch for a few minutes before resuming the game. Since Manhattan regularly played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in the 88s and into the 89s, the tradition spread into the major leagues. introducing your manhattan college lady jaspers...
