President Dave s New Year s Message I hope all of you were able to spend the holidays with family and friends. I know that with all the shopping and gift giving, the month of December can be very overwhelming and stressful. I would like to thank you for spending your Sunday evenings with your dancing friends at the Continental Dance Club. I enjoyed seeing everyone dressed up in their holiday best for our December dinner, and once again, the food was absolutely delicious. (How funny is this - I asked Beth if she had brought her brownies and she said no. When asked to explain why not, Beth said the alphabetical food order was changed and she had to bring meat! Trust me, there were plenty of great desserts. Maybe we ll enjoy Beth s brownies the next time!!!) As everyone knows by now, our elections are over and I was re-elected along with Susie Stewart, Ruthann Osenbaugh and Rhoda Israelov. Our other four board members, Ben Davis, Aina Clayton, Tanya Marshal and Nancy Lutz will be up for elections starting in September 2019. We feel as a group of eight board members we have accomplished quite a few good things for the CDC to help the club continue to be fun and continue to grow. I m going to list a few that come to mind: We feel we have better control of the finances. We broke the 30-minute mixer into two fun-filled 15-minute mixers. We have seen quite a few new members, even some I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR SPENDING YOUR SUNDAY EVENINGS WITH YOUR DANCING FRIENDS AT THE CONTINENTAL DANCE CLUB. Dave Hinderliter youngsters along with the young at hearts. And yes, we have room for more. We ve been working together with DJs Monica and Rog to plan special events, update our music, and shortening the songs (3-4 additional songs per hour means more chances to dance, ladies!) With our members being such good cooks, we eliminated catering to our special balls. We are planning more exhibitions by members and teachers in 2019. There will be improvements in our Newsletter under the guidance of Monica Stahlhut. We will continue to donate to the Kids Dance Outreach (in 2018 we donated $730.) We have been crosspromoting our dances with Heartland dances, as well as Indy Dancers. Did you know that several of our members participate in dance competitions? Did you know other members volunteer to help with the Special Olympics? If you think you d like to participate, please talk to Rog and Amy. Right here within the club we could use some volunteers every now and then. Don t be shy talk to me or to another board member and we will make you feel as important as we are (LOL)! I never thought I would be saying this, but I really would like to say thanks for the opportunity to be the President of the Continental Dance Club. I wish every one of you good health, happiness and a lot of great dancing in 2019. President Dave 2

Come to the Continental Dance and in between the songs, you can venture back to the small ballroom and watch the game. MY CDC DAVID BURKHART Maybe there won t be marriage, George Downes tells Julianne Potter in the movie My Best Friend s Wedding, but by God, there ll be dancing. These days nobody s teasing Dave Burkhart for not making his school baseball or track team, because wherever you see Dave, there ll definitely be dancing, and by God, the man can dance! As a child, surgery for cerebral palsy had left Dave with one leg shorter than the other. Competitive sports were off the table, and so Dave turned his attention to music and technology, originally contemplating a career as a music teacher. In college, he took square dancing to satisfy his PE requirement. Years later, a group of friends invited Dave to join them in taking six weeks of an introductory dance lesson series at Starlite Ballroom. After re-enrolling for a second, and then a third series of lessons, Dave was hooked. Along the way he found Fountain Square swing dancing, where he met CDC member Connie Hatherill. Connie encouraged Dave to come to Continental, but it was a conversation with CDC member Doug Johnson that clinched the deal for Dave. Attending a group dance class with Doug, Dave noticed a big improvement in his friend s dance skills, an improvement Doug attributed to Continental. Just over a year ago, Dave became a CDC member. Besides being a fun activity, he asserts, dance has improved his coordination and balance. Having completed his Bachelor s degree in music education, Dave taught for a few years before returning to school to study IT. Now under contract with IBM, he provides phone and printer support services. True to his music training, he participates in bell choir for his church, and plays guitar and bass guitar for contemporary worship services. A man of many talents, Dave enjoys bowling and golf. Maybe (who knows??) there won t be marriage, but, wherever you see Dave, one thing is certain - by God, there ll be dancing! Interviewed by CDC board member Rhoda Israelov 6
