Back in Business Idaho State s coaching staff is back in business for its second season after leading the Bengals to an 11-20 season and a Big Sky semifinal appearance at the 2009 conference tournament. Last season was Seton Sobolewski s first year as a head coach and he led ISU in its 11th Big Sky tournament appearance and a near upset over Montana at Dahlberg Arena in the semifinals of the Big Sky tournament. Associate Head Coach Angela Munger was promoted to her position after the 2008-09 season. Bengals End on Solid Note The Bengals ended the 2008-09 season with a loss to Montana, but the strides they made in that game showed a solid effort by the team. ISU was reduced to an eight deep bench midway through the season due to injury. The team suffered a 70-48 loss at Montana and a 73-39 loss at home after their bench size had been reduced. The Bengals fought back in the semifinal tournament as they led the Griz by 11 points in the half and held Montana to a two-point lead with 4:55 remaining before being overcome at the free-throw line for a 70-56 loss. Three Seniors: Iacovita, Diehl, Videbeck Idaho State has three seniors on the team, two of which were regular starters for the Bengals. Oana Iacovita and Devin Diehl were regular starters for ISU in the forward and guard positions respectively. Andrea Videbeck is coming off a redshirt season. Videbeck competed for Idaho State in the 2007-08 season and played for Chandler Community College and Fresno State previously. 2009-10 Idaho State University Women s Basketball Game Notes Pg. 1 ISU GAME NOTES: SCHEDULE/RESULTS Overall: 0-0 Big Sky: 0-0 November 13 at Saint Mary s 6:30 p.m. 15 at California 6:00 p.m. 19 at Nebraska 6:05 p.m. 21 BOISE STATE 3:30 p.m. 24 MONTANA WESTERN 7:05 p.m. 30 at Wyoming 7:00 p.m. December 2 at Utah 7:00 p.m. 4 # at Arizona State 6:00 p.m. 5 # Pepperdine or Utah State TBA 9 at Minnesota 6:05 p.m. 12 UTAH STATE 2:05 p.m. 21 SOUTHERN UTAH 7:05 p.m. 29 GREAT FALLS 7:05 p.m. January 2 * at Montana State 7:05 p.m. 4 * at Montana 7:05 p.m. 8 * NORTHERN ARIZONA 7:05 p.m. 9 * NORTHERN COLORADO 7:05 p.m. 15 * at Weber State 7:05 p.m. 22 * at Eastern Washington 8:05 p.m. 23 * at Portland State 8:05 p.m. 30 * at Sacramento State 2:05 p.m. February 5 * MONTANA STATE 7:05 p.m 6 * MONTANA 7:05 p.m 11 * at Northern Colorado 7:05 p.m 13 * at Northern Arizona 6:35 p.m 18 * WEBER STATE 7:05 p.m 26 * PORTLAND STATE 7:05 p.m 27 * EASTERN WASHINGTON 7:05 p.m March 5 * SACRAMENTO STATE 6:05 p.m 11 % Quarterfinals TBA 12 % Semifinals TBA 13 % Finals ALL CAPS Denotes Home Game * Denotes Big Sky Conference Game # Denotes Arizona State Tournament (Tempe, AZ) % Big Sky Conference Tournament BIG SKY STANDINGS Big Sky Overall Idaho State 0-0 0-0 Montana 0-0 0-0 Portland State 0-0 0-0 Montana State 0-0 0-0 Sacramento State 0-0 0-0 Northern Arizona 0-0 0-0 Northern Colorado 0-0 0-0 Eastern Washington 0-0 0-0 Weber State 0-0 0-0

2009-10 BENGAL BASKETBALL GAME NOTES IDAHO STATE S RECORD UNDER SOBOLEWSKI... Seton Sobolewski Head Coach Northern Arizona, 01 2nd Season Seton Sobolewski (so bo LES ski) begins his second season as the head women s basketball coach, the 12th head coach in ISU history. Most recently he led the Bengals to a fourth place finish in the Big Sky regular season where the Bengals made their 11th Big Sky Championship appearance and had a near upset of Montana in the Big Sky semifinal tournament game. Sobolewski has had six of his players earn All-Academic honors. In his first season Sobolewski had a player named to the First Team All-Conference, Michelle Grohs, and a player named to the Second Team All-Conference, Jenna Brown. Under his direction Oana Iacovita earned three All- Tournament Honors including the Big Sky All-Tournament Team. Before Idaho State, Sobolewski was a major part of UC Riverside s success as a Division I program that has a Big West regular season title, two Big West Tournament titles, two NCAA appearances, and a near tournament upset of #8 Arizona State in 2007. The last four of those years were spent serving under John Margaritis, who was a former associate head coach at Northern Arizona. While serving as recruiting coordinator at UC Riverside, Sobolewski recruited and coached 2007 Big West Conference Player of the Year Kemie Nkele. The players brought in during his time as recruiting coordinator earned one Big West Conference Player of the Year award, one Freshman of the Year award, one Defensive Player of the Year award, two Big West Conference tournament MVP awards, four All-Big West Tournament awards, four First-Team All-Big West conference awards, three Second Team All-Big West Conference awards, seven Honorable Mention All-Big West Conference awards, five All-Big West Freshman Team awards, eight Big West Conference Player of the Week awards, and three Big West Academic All-Conference award winners. These awards were won over three seasons. Sobolewski served one year as an assistant with the men s program at Yavapai Junior College, where the team advanced to the region tournament after going 19-12 for the year. In 2000-01, Sobolewski served as an assistant with the girls basketball program at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, where he served under Head Coach Jenny Shayani, Coconino improved nine games that year to 15-12 overall. In coming to Idaho State, Sobolewski takes over one of the top programs in the Big Sky Conference, as the Bengals have qualified for the postseason five times in the past eight seasons, winning regular season titles in 2001 and 2006, winning the conference tournament in 2001 and 2007, advancing to the NCAA Tournament both of those seasons. The Bengals have also qualified for the WNIT in 2004, 2006, and 2008. Seton attended Eastern Arizona College, starting on the men s basketball team for two years from 1995-97, before moving to Oklahoma Panhandle State University a Division II school in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he played from 1997-99. In 1998, he was selected to Who s Who in America s Colleges and Universities. A 2001 graduate of Northern Arizona University with a bachelor of sciences degree in biology with an emphasis in secondary education, Sobolewski got his start by serving as a manager under former NAU Head Coach Meg Sanders for the 1999-2000 season. Sobolewski hails from Flagstaff, Arizona where his parents and younger brother, Ian, reside. His brother is currently a junior at Northern Arizona. He was recently married to the former Katie Haan of Upland, Calif. 2009-10 2008-09 TOTAL OVERALL... 2008-09 BENGAL BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Three Returning Starters Idaho State returns three Bengals who started for Idaho State, Oana Iacovita, Devin Diehl and Chelsea Pickering before her ACL tear at Montana State ended her season. Diehl started in all 31 games for ISU while Iacovita started in 30 contests. Pickering made 14 starting appearances before her injury. Iacovita Comes Off Best Season Forward Iacovita comes off her best season with the Bengals and she only has up to go from there. Last season she was named to three all-tournament teams including the Big Sky All-Conference team where she posted the game-winning shot against Sacramento State with.6 seconds left in overtime to advance the Bengals to the semifinals. She was a key player in ISU s near upset of Montana as she led the team with 22 points. Iacovita averaged 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds last season while recording a.455 field goal percentage. Oana Iacovita Diehl it Up Devin Diehl returns as ISU s top off-ball defender from last season returns with senior Diehl who averaged six points and 3.5 rebounds. The guard/ forward recorded four double-figure shooting games and scored a career-high 17 points against Southern Utah last season. She posted 11 blocked shots, the third most on the team. Pickering Back in Action Pickering went down within the first five minutes of Idaho State s contest at Montana State with an ACL tear. Her injury came midway through the season, just two games after a career-high performance. Pickering s performance was also a team game-high for the season when she posted 31 points against Portland State. The 5-9 guard averaged 10.4 points per game, and 15 in conference play. She also recorded 3.6 rebounds per game. Pickering has worked hard to get back on the court and is a solid performer in practice. Bengals Welcome Seven Freshman Idaho State recruited seven highly touted freshmen for the 2009-10 season that consists of three guards and four forwards. Guard Morgan Wohltman helped her team to the 2006-07 5A State championships for Highland High School s second straight state title and was a McDonald s All-American Nominee among her many accomplishments. Guard Kaela Oakes was named Region MVP in her senior year and helped Basha High School to the State Quarterfinals two years in a row while Brea Matthews, a 5-10 guard from San Diego, helped Mt. Carmel high school become a three-time defending CIF Champion team from 2006-08. ISU also gained some much needed height with the addition of two 6 3 players: Ashlee Rigter and Shannon Byrne. Rigter joins the Bengals from New Zealand where she competed for her country in the under 18 N2team from 2006-07. Byrne was the second highest scorer in the South Puget Sound League with 16.9 points per game her junior year. The Bengals also added Ashley Smith and Ashleigh Vella. Smith helped Willamette high school achieve an undefeated season her senior year with a 27-0 record. While Vella, who hails from Australia and holds dual citizenship in Maltese, helped Malta win a gold medal in the Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in June of 2009. Struggles that Idaho State Faces this Season Though the Bengals have returned solid contributors and introduced some athletic freshman, Idaho State is still faced with several challenges including reintroducing the motion offense to the new Bengals and facing a tough non-conference schedule. Luckily for the Bengals the adversity they faced last year will prepare them for the road ahead. However You Want to Spell It Idaho State has three freshmen forwards with the same name. Luckily there are some differences between the players as they all spell their names differently: Ashlee Rigter, Ashley Smith and Ashleigh Vella. Differences don t stop there as all three players come from different countries. Rigter is from New Zealand, Smith is from the U.S. and Vella is from Australia. Also, all three players are brunettes. Luckily Ashley Smith goes by the nickname A.J. which cuts down on any confusion. This will also be a help as Saint Mary s has a forward named Ashlee Smith. About Saint Mary s Saint Mary s returns 13 lettermen and four starters to the court including Louella Tomlinson who averaged 5.4 blocks per game for the second best mark in the NCAA and helped her team become the leading team in the NCAA with 7.1 blocks per game. Saint Mary s ended the season with an 11-19 record and went 7-7 to tie for fourth in the West Coast Conference. In Saint Mary s exhibition game against Chico State the Gaels posted a 78-55 victory at the McKeon Pavilion. Forward Tomlinson led the Gaels with 14 points while Jontelle Smith and Ashlee Smith chipped in 12 and 10 points respectively. The team shot 41.1 percent for the game and was consistent throughout. Series Info and Last Meeting with the Gaels Saint Mary s leads the series 5-1 with the Gaels capturing the last meeting 75-71 at Reed Gym during the pre-conference season last year where Oana Iacovita was one of three Bengals to post double-figures in points with ten. Saint Mary s is on a five-game win streak with the Bengals only victory occurring in the team s first meeting. ISU defeated Saint Mary s 79-39 during the 1981-82 season. ISU s toughest loss to Saint Mary s was a 101-79 defeat during the 1994-95 season in the team s second meeting Devin Diehl of the season.
