2 BENGAL BASKETBALL GAME NOTES IDAHO STATE S RECORD UNDER SOBOLEWSKI... Seton Sobolewski Head Coach Northern Arizona, 01 2nd Season Seton Sobolewski (so bo LES ski) begins his second season as the head women s basketball coach, the 12th head coach in ISU history. Most recently he led the Bengals to a fourth place finish in the Big Sky regular season where the Bengals made their 11th Big Sky Championship appearance and had a near upset of Montana in the Big Sky semifinal tournament game. Sobolewski has had six of his players earn All-Academic honors. In his first season Sobolewski had a player named to the First Team All-Conference, Michelle Grohs, and a player named to the Second Team All-Conference, Jenna Brown. Under his direction Oana Iacovita earned three All- Tournament Honors including the Big Sky All-Tournament Team. Before Idaho State, Sobolewski was a major part of UC Riverside s success as a Division I program that has a Big West regular season title, two Big West Tournament titles, two NCAA appearances, and a near tournament upset of #8 Arizona State in The last four of those years were spent serving under John Margaritis, who was a former associate head coach at Northern Arizona. While serving as recruiting coordinator at UC Riverside, Sobolewski recruited and coached 2007 Big West Conference Player of the Year Kemie Nkele. The players brought in during his time as recruiting coordinator earned one Big West Conference Player of the Year award, one Freshman of the Year award, one Defensive Player of the Year award, two Big West Conference tournament MVP awards, four All-Big West Tournament awards, four First-Team All-Big West conference awards, three Second Team All-Big West Conference awards, seven Honorable Mention All-Big West Conference awards, five All-Big West Freshman Team awards, eight Big West Conference Player of the Week awards, and three Big West Academic All-Conference award winners. These awards were won over three seasons. Sobolewski served one year as an assistant with the men s program at Yavapai Junior College, where the team advanced to the region tournament after going for the year. In , Sobolewski served as an assistant with the girls basketball program at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, where he served under Head Coach Jenny Shayani, Coconino improved nine games that year to overall. In coming to Idaho State, Sobolewski takes over one of the top programs in the Big Sky Conference, as the Bengals have qualified for the postseason five times in the past eight seasons, winning regular season titles in 2001 and 2006, winning the conference tournament in 2001 and 2007, advancing to the NCAA Tournament both of those seasons. The Bengals have also qualified for the WNIT in 2004, 2006, and Seton attended Eastern Arizona College, starting on the men s basketball team for two years from , before moving to Oklahoma Panhandle State University a Division II school in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he played from In 1998, he was selected to Who s Who in America s Colleges and Universities. A 2001 graduate of Northern Arizona University with a bachelor of sciences degree in biology with an emphasis in secondary education, Sobolewski got his start by serving as a manager under former NAU Head Coach Meg Sanders for the season. Sobolewski hails from Flagstaff, Arizona where his parents and younger brother, Ian, reside. His brother is currently a junior at Northern Arizona. 4 BENGAL BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Quickly Idaho State (1-4) snapped a four-game losing streak to open the season when the Bengals defeated Montana Western at home. The team will have five days off from competition to rest before playing its toughest week as far as number of games when ISU plays four games in six days. The Bengals will kick-off the busy week at Wyoming on Monday, November 30 at 7:05 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium, then travel to Utah for a Wednesday game on December 2 at 7:05 p.m. From Salt Lake City the Bengals will travel to Arizona State to compete in the ASU Classic Tournament. ISU will face the tournament host on Friday, December 4 at 6 p.m., then play either Pepperdine or Utah State on Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. in ISU s second round of the tournament. In one week Idaho State will travel nearly 2,500 miles to get to each game and return home. All of Idaho State s games are broadcast by KISU 91.1 FM by play-by-play announcer Mark Liptak. Fans can also access the broadcast through a web link on ISU s athletic web page at About Idaho State Idaho State averages 55.2 points per game hitting 34.9 percent of its field goals. ISU maintains a high three-point field goal percentage at 32.1 percent, but struggles on free throws with a 66.7 percent accuracy. ISU averages 33 rebounds a game. ISU s scoring margin is 22.8 and it s rebounding margin in The Bengals have posted 118 turnovers this season, but have just a -3.8 turnover margin. Bengal Standouts Idaho State is led by senior Oana Iacovita who averages 14.2 points per game and led the Bengals with 20 points against Montana Western, an ISU individual season high. No Bengal has posted double-figures in rebounds, but Iacovita is close as she has posted two games with nine rebounds, and leads the Bengals in rebounds averaging 7.2 per game. Iacovita hits 44.9 percent of her field goals and the forward hits 50 percent of her treys. Junior Chelsea Pickering averages 10 points per game and has broken back into the starting lineup after a hand injury had her seated for a game. Pickering hits 36.8 percent of her shots and 41.7 percent of her treys. She averages 3.5 rebounds per game. Freshman Kaela Oakes has been impressive from the start as she opened the season with a 17 point performance against Saint Mary s. Oakes holds a 42.4 percent accuracy from the field and 57.1 percent accuracy from the arc. She leads the Bengals, along with Pickering at the free-throw line as both Bengals average 87.5 percent from the line. Oana Iacovita Opponents are Solid and Mostly Undefeated All of Idaho State s opponents have been undefeated this season except for Montana Western. Saint Mary s and #18 California had their season openers against ISU while Nebraska was 2-0 and Boise State was 3-0 before playing the Bengals. The road doesn t get easier as ISU will play Wyoming who is also undefeated at 5-0 for the season. Iacovita Charged with Streaking Senior Oana Iacovita is on a five-game streak of recording double-figure points this season. However, when looking back to last season as well she is on a 10-game streak kicked off by her career-high 30 points at Sacramento State on February 26th. Bengals Out-Rebound Boise State Idaho State out-rebounded Boise State 43-38, it is the first time ISU had out-rebounded an opponent since its rebound performance at Portland State. Idaho State s only game where it matched opponents on rebounds ISU recorded five games where they out-rebounded opponents, six under Head Coach Sobolewski. Bengals Have Faced Tough Opponents to Open Season The Bengals will have a long, full day of travel the day before playing their season opener against Boise State. The Bengals opened the season with a close contest seven point contest against Saint Mary s a team that had the nation s No. 2 block leader Louella Tomlinson. Idaho State then played No. 18 California, who made it to the sweet 16 of NCAA s last year, and Nebraska, a team with an All-America candidate that went to the second round of the WNIT. In the Big Sky Idaho State posts the fifth best three-point field goal percentage in the Big Sky with 31.7 percent, and oddly enough as the Bengals have been struggling with offensive boards, they post the fifth most offensive boards per game against Big Sky opponents with 12 rebounds per game. Iacovita was ranked 11th in the Big Sky for scoring average with 12.8 prior to ISU s contests against Montana Wester. At her current average of 14.2 she would be ranked ninth. In rebounds she averaged 6.8 for the eighth best standing in the Big Sky. At her current average of 7.2 she would be ranked fifth. Wohltman Finds Her Swing Freshman Morgan Wohltman found her sweet spot against Montana Western. The Bengal was recruited for her shooting and it showed as she recorded a career-high 15 points hitting 4-of-11 from the arc for a game-high of four made treys. She averages 28.6 percent from the arc for the season. Byrne Shows Promise, Tears it Up in Pro-Rated Time Shannon Byrne posted six points hitting 3-of-6 from the field and recorded two rebounds during her 11 minutes against Montana Western. Byrne s minutes have been highly productive. If her averages were prorated for 40 minutes of time she would average 13.6 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. Her pro-rated point average is the third best on the team. Iacovita leads the pro-rated point count with 17.4 while Pickering would average 16.8 points in 40 minutes of play. Practice Isn t So Friendly: Vella Breaks Nose In a practice on Tuesday, November 17 freshman Ash Vella was struck in the face by the elbow of senior Oana Iacovita. It wasn t the senior exerting her will, but merely an accident during a pivot drill. However, the blow was hard enough to break Vella s nose. She will wear a face mask until Pg. 5 BENGAL BASKETBALL GAME NOTES it heals. Unfortunately for Vella both of eyes took on shiners that were more visually disturbing than physically for the tough freshman. Need to Turnover for the Bengals Idaho State has struggled with turnovers recording 20 against Saint Mary s, 34 against Cal and 22 against Nebraksa. However, Idaho State caused Saint Mary s to turnover the ball 28 times, Cal posted 19 turnovers. In ISU s tough game against Cal the Bengals were able to real in the turnovers posting 13 in the second half as opposed to 21 in the first and only nine in the first half against Nebraska. ISU reduced turnovers against Boise State with 23 and it s lowest 19 against Montana Western. Oakes Begins Career with Solid Performance Freshman Kaela Oakes opened the season with a game-high 17 point performance against Saint Mary s in her first Division I game. Oakes hit 6-of-13 from the field. She hit 50 percent of her treys (2-of-4) and she was a perfect 3-for-3 from the line. The 5-5 guard also posted four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Videbeck Returns After Stunning Loss Senior Andrea Videbeck missed ISU s season opener as she was in Gilbert, Arizona spending time with her family. Idaho State University extends its sincerest condolences to Videbeck and her family with the passing of her step-father. Videbeck was able to return for ISU s game against #18 Cal. Videbeck averaged 13 minutes on the floor and recorded a rebound, an assist and a steal. Against Nebraska Videbeck matched her career-high 7 points and career-high three rebounds, then went on to break her career-high with nine points against Boise State at home. Three Seniors: Iacovita, Diehl, Videbeck Idaho State has three seniors on the team, two of which were regular starters for the Bengals. Oana Iacovita and Devin Diehl were regular starters for ISU in the forward and guard positions respectively. Andrea Videbeck is coming off a redshirt season. Videbeck competed for Idaho State in the season and played for Chandler Community College and Fresno State previously. Andrea Videbeck Struggles ISU Faces this Season Though the Bengals have returned solid contributors and introduced some athletic freshman, Idaho State is still faced with several challenges including reintroducing the motion offense to the new Bengals and facing a tough non-conference schedule. Luckily for the Bengals the adversity they faced last year will prepare them for the road ahead. However You Want to Spell It Idaho State has three freshmen forwards with the same name. Luckily there are some differences between the players as they all spell their names differently: Ashlee Rigter, Ashley Smith and Ashleigh Vella. Differences don t stop there as all three players come from different countries. Rigter is from New Zealand, Smith is from the U.S. and Vella is from Australia. Also, all three players are brunettes. Luckily Ashley Smith goes by the nickname A.J. which cuts down on any confusion.
