November match and stuff Forty-two cowboys and cowgirls came out on a chilly morning for some fast and fancy CAS shooting. A Panhandle Cowboys, Howdy and Welcome was given to Gun Peddler and Southpaw Storm, a father and son shooting team. Hope you come back to see us cowboys. High Card mentioned the quilt being made by Sammy Jo and Cassidy Jane. It is a raffle item with tickets going for $5.00 each. Tickets can be purchased from Sammy Jo at s.pitkin@att.net or from Cassidy Jane at bob15621@aol.com. Also, the last chance to purchase tickets will be at our December 3rd Christmas Dinner. Proceeds will go to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. The Panhandle Cowboys also donated $200.00 from the November match fees. The Doug Guentz Shootist/Fastest Clean Sweep Award was awarded to Mad Dane for his excellent shooting in the October match. The Panhandle Cowboys Christmas Dinner is scheduled for 5:30pm, December 3, 2011, at Roberts Seafood and Catfish Restaurant at 4935 Saufley Field Road. Just let Cassidy Jane or Sammy Jo know if you are planning to go...see their email addresses above. No prepay or anything as it is not a one-meal-fits-all event. It is Dutch-Treat; just order what you want off the menu. Cowboy dress is highly encouraged, but not required. The quilt drawing and award will take place at the dinner. I also hear that there will be some really nice door prizes for the dinner attendees. Yep, must be present to win. Panhandle cowboys badges The subject of Panhandle Cowboys badges has come up again. They are available at Sharpstuff USA; phone 850-434-7556, located on the back side of the old Town & Country Plaza building. They can be ordered from their website, smartstuffusa.com, but probably the best bet to be sure
there are no errors creeping into your order, is to go to their store, and see Steve Gallimore. He can be sure your order is accurate and can take care of any problems if the badge maker makes a mistake. Price is $60.00 or so depending on the center badge seal you select. December side match With the weather cooling down, and getting us thinking about Christmas, the side matches will begin again. For December Navajo Kid and High Card will be running a Wild Bunch Side Match, but instead of using the.45 ACP M1911 and the appropriate caliber center fire rifle, we will be using a CAS legal.22 rifle and a.22 version of the M1911. The M1911 can be one of the.22 versions or a.22 converson of the full size M1911 and you will need 3 magazines. For the shotgun you will need the classic Winchester M97 or replica thereof. Pistols and rifles will be available if you need to borrow one or both. If you are borrowing a pistol and bring your own ammo, bring the high velocity ammo, not the target or low velocity ammo, as the.22 pistols function better with the high velocity ammo. September/october cowboy James Stewart was our cowboy for the month of September/October. The movie Winchester 73 was made in 1950 by Universal-International. The same year James Stewart wanted to do the movie Harvey, also, at Universal-International. The studio refused to pay him his standard fee of $200,000.00 per film. However, the studio head told him he could do both films for a percentage of the profits. His agent got him a contract for 50% of the profits. For the movie Winchester 73 James Stewart earned near $600,000.00. Rooster Cogburn correctly identified James Stewart as a September/October Cowboy. As for the number of people who handled the rifle from the time Lynn McAdam first received it the count is 10, and Rooster Cogburn got it right.
November cowboy Our cowboy for November was born in Weed, New Mexico, on August 16, 1899. He learned to play guitar and fiddle by ear, and was a member of several singing cowboy groups. He was, also, a songwriter, writing many songs for his friend singing cowboy Eddie Dean. He appeared in over 250 movies, 215 of which were westerns, most times playing one of the heavies. He played Frankenstein s monster three times, including in the film Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. He appeared in the first three episodes of The Lone Ranger TV series as the fiendish bushwhacker Butch Cavendish. Who is he?
