1 SOUTH UMPQUA ROD AND GUN CLUB A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. 845 Rod and Gun Club Road Riddle, Oregon Mailing Address: P.O. Box 639 Canyonville, Oregon Range Status Phone: (541) Website: Newsletter for September 2013 NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS SUNDAY, September 1st, 2013 AT 2:00 P.M. Do Not Forget to mail in your dues, by September 30th, delinquent memberships will be dropped. In order to re-join, the back dues must be paid in full from June 30th, 2013 to June 30th, So don t miss out with the on-going Club activities and improvements. Canyonville s Pioneer Days Aug 22nd 25th, we again had our booth next to the American Legion and the VFW. This four-day event allowed us to sell more raffle tickets, including ones for the Weatherby 20ga Shotgun, with only few tickets left to purchase. (100 Tickets Only) We also introduced our Club to several people that had no idea that our Rod & Gun Club existed. Jerry Jewell & Louis Eggert have installed 5 clangors on the hillside behind the 100yd Range for your enjoyment. They range from 8 lower right to 5 right center. We changed the paint on the 200yd clangors and the ones on the 400yd Range to a white, they now stand out much better, thanks to a suggestion by one of our members. The Board of Directors takes each members suggestion and through consultation with other Board members, makes a determination if it is in the best interest of the Club members. Roseburg Knife & Gun Show is on September 14th & 15th at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. We have 2 tables at this event, and will raffle both the Rossi Handgun and the Mauser Hunting Rifle, on Sunday afternoon. The event is scheduled for Saturday 9am to 5pm, and Sunday 9am- 3pm. Member David Schubert with the Marine Corps League will hold a short meeting at 2pm, then the Marines will shoot at the Ranges. They have scheduled this for September 15th, 2013 starting at 2:30pm. The Board will honor them, by waving the daily fees for these Marines which have served us and our country. If you are here at the range, be sure to recognize them for their past duty, having served for all of us. Due to the generous donations for the new roof for the Clubhouse, we have enough money to purchase the metal roofing materials, which will last longer than most of us will be around. Thanks to all the members for making this happen.

3 FAMILY MEMBER PROFILE: JOHN EYERS NEW EACH MONTH ABOUT OUR MEMBERS! by Jerry Heavrin, Secretary John was born in Klamath Falls on December 24th, His folks had a ranch in Bonanza, Ca. where they had bought property and later had purchased 26,000 acres at 50 cents/acre and also obtained 50,000 acres of deeded Government land. When he was 9 or 10 they moved to Grants Pass, where he attended Grants Pass High School and graduated in He met his future wife as a junior in high school, later married Earline after he was in the service. John had joined the reserves, then joined the Navy in December 4th, In the Navy, he entered a Radar Technicians class with 167 students, but there were only 17 students that graduated as the first Radar Technicians. He served on the USS Tolovana AL164, an Oiler-Tanker Ship, and in 1959 transferred to the USS Navasota Oiler Tanker Ship. Upon discharge, John married Earline and later had 3 children; Kathy, Brenda and son Jerry. In 1983 John was a Hunter Safety Instructor, and was living in Cove, Or. He had sold his home he had built, and also his mother s house, and bought a ranch in eastern Oregon. While living in Cove, he served as Hunter Safety Instructor for Le Grand, Elgin, Florence and Union, as well as our Club. He obtained a Bronze award for 50 students, then Silver for 100, gold for 1000, and the Platinum Award for In January 2002, he received the Distinguished Instructor Award after putting 4000 students through the Hunter Safety Program, and was considered one of the top 10 instructors in the State of Oregon. John has a special gift for instructing children. John joined the Club in 1992, serving as President 1995 & 96. He also served as Secretary, and again as Club President in 2006 & John had a heart attack in mid 2007 and elected not to run for office in November John is a dedicated Life Member of our Club and was responsible for the bridges that are placed along our roadway. He continues today to provide needed information on past events of the Club and the location of items that have been buried for many years (ie. Septic Tank, water lines, etc.). An avid hunter, both with a bow & arrow and a rifle, John holds a world record - four point score of 161 points for a Mountain Mule Deer - Eagle Cap with a 120 pound bow, shot at 20 yd, the arrow went through the deer and stuck in a tree. He has also shot a 6x7 point buck and while he was cleaning it, he noticed a large Bull Elk watching him. After a while it wandered off, and he had to go back to camp to get help to carry out the deer. It took 6 people to load it into a jeep pickup. At 11 years old he killed his first deer with a homemade arrow, then at 12 years of age shot a 243 pound mule deer with a Winchester rifle. His son Jerry, like his father, shot his first buck, a 4-pointer at age 12. Hunting and fishing has been an important part of his family s life and while his wife no longer hunts, she can still be his companion. In 1973 John became a Gun Stock Maker and has sold many to stores and to individuals during the time he made gun stocks. Last year, he made and sold stocks for 12 shotguns. His passion is to continue to hunt and provide quality gun stocks for shotguns and rifles. Most of the older Club members know John and many have shared in his hunting trips and his many interesting story s. (P.S. John brought newspaper clippings, awards, documentation & pictures to backup the features listed above.) 3
